Honestly making full use if all of the tools and conveniences in your arsenal is the best way to go instead of completely going freehand + it's not great especially when the person giving advice tells others that their work is no good because they used X tool to make their life easier

i feel like while sketching one of the most important things is to capture the essence of what you intend to draw. Smaller details aren't as important when you're sketching, so the first thing to work on would be the shapes and ideas of what you'd like to draw. Let your lines loose and dont feel too anxious if you make mistakes. A great way of practicing this would be to using a pen when sketching, since that way you won't be able to erase it, you'll be forced to work with what you have, making it easier to move on from mistakes.

once the overall feeling or concept of what you'd like to draw is laid, you can start with the details, when drawing features that are similar to one another (example: eyes), you should draw both at the same time, don't draw one then the other, that way you will be able to keep them looking similar easier.
And most importantly! Don't forget to draw what you enjoy most! sometimes while practicing doesn't look as good as you'd expect, taking a break and drawing something for your own pleasure can be great
Drawing and making art as a hobby is all about having fun!
