that depends on your subject matter n mood you want out of the piece though

because what I'm doing is a very stylistic approach to making use of light n colour to get what I want, which may not necessarily be helpful to your style ya know XD

the main advice I would give is just zoom out often
look at your piece as a whole. If it's easy to tell at a glance what you've drawn, then you did a good job.

because in this instance, there's technically two light sources happening at the same time:

• one from above, and one from the back behind the trees. I'm making use of that to frame the composition at the same time because of how much darker I've made the foreground tree stumps compared to the back ones.
  it's a little atmospheric perspective to create a sense of depth.

then I'm going to put a sky kid right where the center bit of the tree opening is, which is the focal point of the piece.
so essentially, I work my use of light and colour to make sure my focal point stands out.

tl;dr not so much advice on 'shading', more just art fundamental knowledge of colour theory + values to make stuff look good XD
