trying clip studio again is reminding me why I only have the trial version, I select the antler to shade but for some reason it grabs a chunk from the hat also....just why????

i think you have the "similar colour slection" set too big
so it thinks that brown is a close enough shade to the gray of the hat

I don't even know where that setting is...or why it exists...

basically if its off and you try to select, itll only take that EXACT colour, not a single shade above or below
which is SUPER annoying if you have a gradient, so the higher you turn it up the more it will consider 'selectable'
and if it's too high (or the shade you DONT want is too close to the sahde you want) then itll select that too

what i do is i make each part that isnt the same color a separate layer
so even if it DOES select the littke nub of the horn its not actaully gonna get ruined because its on a different layer

i would HIGHLY recommend clipping layers if you arent already using them

I..didn't even know that was a thing nor what they do, I feel like I'm gonna need to go down a youtube rabbit hole when I finish this sketch... (also where can you turn off the similar color selection, I keep my gradients on separate layers so I can tweak whats under or above them easier.. )

the easier thing to do in your case would be to hide the layer with the gradient, then use the same tool (as long as the setting isn't too high it should work fine! then you can put the gradient layer back on

here's a lil map too

ive never really used reference/draft layers so youd need to look those up
i know one of the fill tools uses reference layers

then again i guess a lot of professional drawing programs do
most also let you rearrange where toolbars go (e.g. the brish size or layer list)

An idea for how I usually do them, gradient from light (closest to character) to dark (furthest into the back), add speckles of various colors and size (not too big) in the same color range, add a more muted/dark color to the edge closest to the water (mix more dark and less light speckles in here). Hope it helps (tried to ref the color you used in your art for a better ideaa of how it would flow in that range)

if you can find a sorta spraypaint/speckle brush and put it on the smallest particle size it should look kinda like grains of sand
vary different shades of the base colour for better effect (only SLIGHT differences thouhg, too big a birht/dark will look bad)

Two of my skykid theories:

Skykids have slow running blood. Because you know you dont lose blood quickly in forest. It progresses over time. Just like oil. You dont lose blood a lot. But if you get deeper into the water you lose it because of the pressure. (This also moves in with my theory of the rain in forest is Acid rain.)

Capes grow longer by a cm over time, kind of like how humans grow a cm each day. An older skykid kind of has a draggy blanket cape, and a younger skykid has a scarf to begin with. This all takes effect no matter the height. It just gets smaller or bigger depending on it. Elders will not have this tacked on to them, no matter what the age.
