Just put a light to source to where you want it not shaded and it will shade itself automaticly

I think doing a darker purple or dark blue, changing the blend to multiply and lower the opacity might look better and helps to not desaturate it

usually yeah it's good to use a different color and not just black, but also if it's for something as small and simple as an emote it works fine to use black and lower opacity. just do whatever you think looks the best to you

i dont draw backgrounds a lot! but i have lots of hypothetical knowledge, if it helps
if the foreground characters are super saturated, the bg can be desaturated, and vice versa. if u want a color from the foreground to pop more, you can use a color opposite it! if you want it to feel super cohesive, you can stick within one color pallette
all that being said, it also looks like the pots u drew are purpleish, and i think if u maintained the purples for the background that could look great its a good blender between the reds and blues that your characters have
soo. maybe some saturated magentas towards the top, getting more towards a desaturated purple at the bottom? unsure. but. i hope this braindump helped KSHDKDB
