The reference itself didn't seem to have many shadows so I think that's why there aren't many shades of colors in that sketch

the main thing is just
don't be married to your reference period lol
like if you can think of a better way to draw the scene then do it your own way

the issue with the ref you were using is that sky lighting is done in a very specific way that's not exactly the most realistic to how it actually works
so it's also just having a general fundamental knowledge of light + shadow and applying it to interpreting reference

you had the right idea but the issue with your version is that the dock blends in with the water bit (I assume that’s what it is)

so think about it more in a way of like
what part of the composition do you want to have stand out the most, then work the rest of your piece around that

honestly if I were you I'd just go to starlight desert and get a better photo set up for composition than trying to 1:1 copy the photo when it's not helpful

as I said, it's more difficult to learn from game art because it's stylistically driven in how the lighting is set up
doing real life photo studies is better for learning to understand how lighting works

Mhm, I will, thank you for reminding me! I will probably either use vinyl decal since put libraries offer vinyl cutters, or cut them out in fabric which, although would end up looking a bit messy, would allow me to add more wedges as time goes on and probably give it more of a wholesome feel since I made it all on my own.

Then again, I would probably also end up drawing the vinyl file myself and could add extra wedges easily as long as I align them correctly... what do you think?
