Or you can try putting some color in background first and see which one is the best, then pick what "sun time" is for that color?

Ok ok, this is gonna be a doosey.

Make it a night time sky, make star reflections in the water, and put an overlay on the characters to make them look like they are in the dark.

Then you can put an "add" or glow to the parts of the skykids/drawing that, well, glow!! Which makes those parts pop out more in the artwork
