It's possible it's a mixture of both. The unnatural cause happened first, then overtime there was erosion that caused isle to shape. After all it was hundreds of years ago.

Now a new map for Sky would be great too. A map that could go past its limits. Here’s an example of that or even a Sky sequel. The game Slime Rancher is described is that the team behind that game accidentally created it to be very limiting. While the upcoming sequel could be heavily expanded on becoming of the infinite space they now have. TGC could always rework the entire layout and allow there to be a point where they could add more realms in game

This is my theory on the light and dark krills from the trailer
They manta they ride in the trailer is actually a krill (lights on the head pointing down as they fly).
After the stars fell and the world became messed up, the wasteland were these krills are originally from were the most affected.
They evolved to become aggressive, territorial predators (rip manta in wasteland)
The lost their flappers and got the spindly legs, armor like outside, etc.
