Dark flakes are not healthy for any species, crabs included. When crabs extract light from water, that light is used to stabalize the darkness. The remaining water goes towards stuff like cooling the crab. Without the natural light sources, the crabs have unstable darkness as seen by flaking

while creatures r forming, when they come into contact with sparks, they turn into light creatures
