Hi guys. I don’t really think this is part of the lore and they simply added masks for aesthetic but I still thought I should tell you.
People call them “tribal masks” but it’s best to just call them african masks. Masks are really important in my culture. Their meaning vary on the place you come from, your ethnic group and time. But where I come from, masks are a medium between the living and spirits.

First of all, it is believed that humans’ faces are deceitful and cannot be trusted. A beautiful face may not be kind, a rough looking one may not be cruel. And all of that may change tomorrow, as human beings constantly change and evolve. Humans are however easily fooled, so masks allow them to not be tricked by the ever changing nature of humanity.

Second of all, there is a predominant aspect of African culture that dedicates itself to the dead. That is actually why I fell in love with the game when I started playing it, because of how much it reminded me of my own beliefs. Masks can be made in honour of one spirit, and will be used when communicating with them. Do you see how in the game, spirits give us their masks? That is the same principle in traditional masks except we are the ones who craft them.

There can be several possibilities: but I was thinking about the concept art that showed sky children were hybrids between the spirits and the light, and the elders and the darkness.

i meant the shape of the mask. the king’s mask shape is more probably a star if he is interpreted as a prince (which is possible), who seems to have a connections with stars if he’s the person depicted in the intro cutscene
