Personally, my theory is that the creautre is just an obstacle in the trial, because the trials were made by the prophets to test the students and pass on the spirits (I think that is what they are called). This is just based on the fact that you can only find them inside the trial. And they stand out from other creatures of darkness because they just snuff out your light and take you to the checkpoint, rather than creatures like krill that just slam the light out of you. If you notice, the ones inside of the trial never once harm you
