I like to think of elders like planets to the spirits stars. And the sky kids the sun. They can only reflect light given to them, but look greater and move faster and are bigger when they have it. Elders are more powerful, but require light/worship to be granted them to use it.

In Valley it looks as tho one is missing, and therefore the twins are incomplete in their physical makeup or the other prosthetics needed as clary mentioned earlier. These light butterflies and mantas just give light. And they're so bright they remain unaffected from rain.
Krill and crabs are darkly colored and take/absorb light.
We Skykids are in the middle of that, able to do both.

tbh i don't have many theories in Sky, the main one i have is that Eden once used to be an actual garden (like the Garden of Eden) or anything filled with life and was an important "check point" for the Sky Realm. Sky kids go there to deposit part of their light to keep the Eden intact but then i do guess someone or something had decided it was not enough, and somehow found or created those rocks who suck the light away. It soon ended up with ||killing every source of light|| even sky kids

thats all i got personally. i believe that in every story there's always someone or something that craves more than they can get and disasters happen

after having some convos in lore chat, Oz bringing to my attention that ancestors have been referred to as stars, it being confirmed that the constellations in the opening are composed of ancestors, and skids being a « new generation », i have a Thought:
Ancestor in English grammar, when referring to family, means people who came long before you. Elders mean people who you can still currently meet, usually grandparents, grand-uncles or aunts, or just anyone older than you. Ancestors are your lineage, Elders are your family
Thus i pose that Ancestors were the first star-beings created by megabird. Although this is basically headcanon, i believe what happened with the ancestors was that they were gods given rule over Horizon (a fanon name for where sky takes place) but then did a bad and lost most of their godliness. Ancestors were basically turned into « humans » with magic (as we see in vault, ancestors can manipulate magic but not as strongly as we see the elders do)
After the Ancestors came the Elders, our direct family. They were the second attempt at star-beings (being the stars that fell in the intro). They lived in Orbit at first, but after doing a bad they fell to Horizon and were worshipped by the Ancestors. Considering the whole « worship » aspect, it seems millennia has passed between when the Ancestors were nerfed and when the Elders fell.
When the Elders fell, another being was sent. The Child of Light. This child was sent to watch over, almost like a little helper for Megabird. This child became the King eventually, and led the path for all star-beings to become indifferent. The kingdom fell, but the King remained, the strongest of their kind.
Thus, the King was taken and was turned into the skykids. The Children of Light, godlike children with the ability to harness flame and sore through the sky, unrelenting despite attacks from darkness. We are the new rulers of this land.
But oh, how history can repeat itself.

i see connectedness as a scale of harmony to light, the power of connections, when you become indifferent, you are both symbolically and physically disconnecting from light, but you don't really disconnect from light, you just have become out of harmony with light. it is rather this disharmony in the synchronous chain of being that permits darkness to penetrate within, as it is impossible for darkness to defeat an continuous barrier of light. Unity, with the stars united, we "sing" in harmony, thus our "light" was infinite.
