one thing i think of is the skykid going through feelings. as in like, how elders feel and how they explain their story. Dawn : It doesn't explain too much, more as in a tutorial. However I believe the Isle Elder explains Eden (the cutscene) and what we need to do, and what we can do. Day : This elder gives a bit of a cheerful boost to our journey. Maybe like the piano spirit, chanting the skykid on and also explaining light creatures. Rain : Rain is more cold or lonely. Not as lonely as wasteland, but more so empty. The rain is possibly the tears of Forest Mama (yes i call the elder forest mama). Something happened to her or the forest, and it is tragic. But for the Sunny parts of Forest, maybe she's working on finding better ways? Sunset : ANnother chanting boost, but instead its more understanding. The twins are so excited to hear about the skykid, and show that they are more so inspired. With always "winning" in the races, they put more motivation within the child. Dusk : This is more historical than the others. Wasteland doesn't have much to show other than pain and depression. So instead, they explain what happen, unlike Rain. It warns the child in difficult ways. The elder, or battle chief, shows weakness inside but strength outside. We can see the suffering clearly. Night/Galactic : Vault is like a gift or celebration, but thats only the first part. To me, this is like a galactic grave of Mantas and other light creatures. Like a home. A "welcome home" message. Moving on to the elder, I feel like they release all feelings towards the skykid. As in "Do you understand, and are you ready for Eden?" messages.

continuation of my headcanon theory
They were building a replacement for vault, a second vault, but they ran out of time. Darkness was already creeping into the kingdom at a fast rate, so they had to do something.
They managed to move some of the stuff to the new vault (which are the shelves we see after meeting the elder, where everything is gray and broken). Sadly, they couldn't keep the darkness from entering the new vault, so it got damaged as a result.
The elder decided to cast a spell on the new vault, so that those who entered after that could see how great it used to be; the greatness of the kingdom. But the spell's strength has faded away (or it was never strong enough to begin with), hence why the area where everything is floating around
