We can speculate that those red stones are dark stones because, when you’re hit from a crab you do not lose light, these stones are smaller than crab, but when you’re hit by a Krill (pure darkness) you lose light. When these stones hit you you lose light fast.

the ones we see in forest aka teenage years look bigger, indicating that he’s « growing up »

and in wasteland we see him as an adult, likely in the middle of his life cause wasteland is the midlife crisis, so to speak
vault is just subliminal king, there’s not very much clear imagery of him (old age, fading away ?)
