the narrator says “find them and bring them home” which means we have a task to fulfill. unless the task is naturally cyclical in itself, what is the point in going through all the trouble in eden only to be rebirthed and do the same thing again as a punishment? We are reincarnated and go in circles but (like the square box beneath the circular building in vault oob... that leads us to the elders oob) maybe we need to somehow get out of the cycle to finish the story?!

Maybe they don't have bodies but parts of themselves that they are attached to. Without a good understanding of the elders, the remaining spirits would likely split these parts into two - one part to put in the place they called home, one part to put with the others so they aren't alone for all eternity
