Anyways. This whole thing settled on one thing in my mind. This might be hookie, but here's what I think.
Megabird isn't a creature or a spirit, she's a concept. She's an idea. It's the idea that connection we make that brings us back from destruction. We hold hands in sky, and in orbit. It helps us fly higher and further, and when done well, creates an experience we never had and fulfills us.
Megabird isn't a thing, it's the spirit of our bonds that drives us forward, and brings us back. It's the desire to connect to someone (when we touch the statues and give them a piece of ourselves). I think it's even written in the stars.

Of course, anyone can play how they want and that's why you can still see orbit while solo. (Honestly, it doesn't matter how you die), but I think they really wanted to emphasize "were in this together and we work together to get there."

yeah. i do agree cooperation is key - even though i play alone, i did join groups and socialize along the way, and everyone else’s help makes a level easier. just that there is no permanent friendship along the way. so my interpretation of megabird is it symbolizes our connection rather than a deep bond — it is our ability to lend a helping hand.

The commonality there being a lack of any star children collected... but whether you have 0 or 100 star children collected, the mask and candle are unavailable upon the initial cause of your loss of light

i'm imagining the king had long been corrupted, so the enchantment questgiver rallied the best mages in the kingdom to storm eden and put an end to the chaos, however they were shot out of the sky and crashed into wasteland. Shortly after the eden diamond blew they were stuck there, and everyone else was dead so they couldnt be rescued. They tried to survive for as long as they could but soon starvation and other factors befell on them and they too perished

Like the enchantment spirits they were low on supplies so they didn't have much time left. the questgiver, knowing this, tried to make the spirit's final moments the best they could be and showed them how to enjoy those few precious moments

The storm at Eden destroys anything light... the elder creatures didn’t survive it. The mantas, the birds, the butterflies, nothing lives in the Eye of Eden. Which just so happens to be where the holy land AKA the jump off point is for Megabird to pick up those delicious soul light...
What better to send to get your ancestor souls and Elder souls back to megabird than a being that can hold the light? And what holds light better than a manta or butterfly? A dark stone...
I propose that the statues you see in Eden of the other sky kids are sky kids in their driest form. (Wet form of course being drenched in light.)
You send one after the other, they’ll carry light like water, spread that water to the first child, then dry up and become a dark stone statue. But the dark stone nature of it is that it absorbs light to work, so all the previous dried up dark stone Skids need....you guessed it... is a little light... that you provide on your merry little way on your trek through the eye of the storm.
You keep the cycle going. (If by you we mean mega bird)
You use the materials provided by the sky world, the dark stones, make a statue, imbue it with sugar and spice and everything nice, plus a touch of light and BAM BOoM! You’ve got yourself a C4 battery ready to ‘splode light all over the previous batch of Dstone sKids.
