In Forest they're sheltered from the rain. So maybe the Winged Lights are trying to stay as close as possible to a light source (like the vases full of light energy)

To explain the lore I could understand from the Enchantment season:
Spirits (probably Season of Lightseekers spirits) find natural energy.
They find a way to store this energy to be used to their benefit.
They show this to (probably) Vault Scholars.
The war is damaging Wasteland so they both agree to build and Ark filled with Orbs filled with the energy to heal the damaged land.
The trip fails, either because the boat got caught in the storm, or got attacked by Krills attracted to fresh food, or both.
Ark gets buried under the sand with time.
Enchantment season happens, Skykids restore the small area

Ooh, when I said "Krill that got attracted to fresh food" I meant it in a sort of predator-prey kind of way. I don't think the Krill are corrupted creatures (yet)
I see them as a different kind of species that is made out of darkness instead of light, they eat light out of instinct of survival, not greed

This would sort of fit with everything. In Forest, they made a mistake because they were too new to the area(they weren’t ‘adults’ and didn’t realize what they were doing wrong). I think it's possible that Sanctuary is just meant to be for fun. Of course people can still come up with theories! But I do remember seeing Ktjn say something about how not all of the seasons/items they do are necessarily connected to the canon lore of the main story in the world of Sky. Some things they just do for fun or because it seemed like something cool to do or something fun for the players to enjoy. So not everything needs to be evaluated so seriously, I guess. ~~although I know this is the lore channel and it's what you guys do, but it seems like not everything will have a canon explanation~~

Also buterflies might be tools. When dealing with farms, having a species that just kinda takes care of itself can be more useful than one that does exactly as expected. If you need something to slowly release light around your crops, you might prefer a butterfly that flaps around and does whatever so you can focus on other things
