Alef was the first elder created, and then the other elders were made. they watched the creation of the sky world as « angels » in orbit with megabird. when megabird wanted to make ancestors without free will, alef stood against this and was cast out for it, and since the other elders agreed they were cast out as well.
it’s meant to be parallel with the story of lucifer. there’s room for improvement

Then, Megabird made Ancestors. Ancestors were given free will. Aleph was made to watch over them, and gained will for himself.
But Will is a strange thing, and comes with concience and thought unlike that which Aleph was prepared for.
Aleph was overwhelmed, and turned to other stars for help, passing on Will as he did so.

Aleph realized that Megabird would not be happy to find that Will had spread beyond it's bounds, and was afraid for their other stars. So Aleph made a decision, and brought the other stars to hide among the Ancestors.
Sadly, Megabird did not prepare Aleph for this type of situation either. The ancestors turned to the stars for leadership, and they did the best they could. When they failed, the consequences were brutal.

Honestly, the themes of the game are very sad with an undercurrent of finding beauty in death.

Beautiful vistas married to imagery of ruins.

Sweet and cute emotes paired with emotes that are scared for their life and cowering from monsters.

Stunning and sweet glowing drawings of people being destroyed by krill.

Life and death is rich in the culture. We see beauty in the world that's ever decaying. So a king who wished to be god watches these sweet kids do something that he never could, bring light in the darkness.

To be honest don’t you think that there was always going to be something corrupt in the sky world after all krills never really existed in the first place until darkness really actually came. And must of been a beginning for organisms to be corrupt too since krills must’ve been a corrupted manifestation of something right...? They hate light, they absorb the light but usually just take the light away and involve themselves in the darkness. Makes me imagine it for there to be hatred towards the light makes me also think that krills were also normal creatures too but happen to get trapped in by something causing them to turn out the way they are.

I, personally think (and this is conjecture) that they are the natural byproduct of the diamond.

A light so grand, bright and good needs to be balanced with something or else it would be an unstable world.

Just wanted to drop this here before I forget

I think I figured what the kids were supposed to learn in Vault, or at least what is being displayed to us:
Levels 1 and 2 (Isle and Prairie) have no projections so no idea what are their contents
Level 3 (Forest) holds information about the trees, possibly a bit of architecture and stone lanterns designs (I don’t remember seeing lanterns anywhere in the world before Forest)
Level 4 (Valley) holds lots of information about architecture and technology, as well as some info on mantas (the skeleton that gives the memory call)
Level 5 (Wasteland) only has info on the giant fishes (the floating vertebrae are fish vertebrae), be it because most of it was lost on the war or because we are children with no idea of what we are doing
Level 6 (Vault/Eden) holds the history of the world from the moment the elders reached it to the moment Eden happened

In the concept, the skids awaken him, and he rushes to defend them from the forces of darkness. He even wielded a large sword!

That would have been a fun/emotional path (not saying that GW rn is not good, izamazing), seeing that the Elder actually throws himself to the door, holding the creatures back.
