So...

All Elders along with the king existed in there own realm of sorts. Eventuslly darkness encroached upon their realm and thus the elders were pushed out and down to the land of Sky. Meanwhile the king remained in the clouds.

There were a society down below which greeted and guidesld the elders, to which the elders most likely took control, that or the society happily bowed to them. Regardless the elders wound up in there respective temples, which were not built for or by them. But instead they were picked due to emotional value with the elders.

Eventually a bunch of stuff happened and they created/discovered the power diamond.

I imagine this finally attracted the king. He descended from the clouds, or wherever he was to claim ownership for the elders work, and r are control of the land of sky.

Eventually, things got out of hand and unstable. The diamond shattered, either killing the king, or causing him to flee.
Meanwhile, with further encroaching darkness from the storm and krills, to the point of full take over and demise of the wastelands.

Thats how we got here. In the game time, with society collapsed, and only the elders to remain. Everyone else left as spirits, or just memories.

So this is about the theory of diamond production and the purpose of flying boats. Boats are mainly for the use of carrying pots of light. You can see these pots of light being made at prairie and I say pots of light because there are butterflies put inside them. In the wave emote cutscene, u can actually see one of the flying boats carrying pots of light.
These pots are being shipped to forest to make power diamonds, they combine the light with organic material at forest and use a diamond press to combine them into an artificial Star, or what we call “power diamond”. You can actually see the concept of this by looking at the forest temple door mural. To add even more details, right when u enter forest the text on the bottom says to “discover an ancient power”. The pic below is another way of looking how power diamonds are made and how forest built them. This diamond press in the picture is also seen at the golden wasteland, and there’s a krill flying around it. It may be broken down but it is noticeable that it is the same factory. Also the shipwreck at wasteland is seen to be carrying certain pieces of this diamond press, it goes to the top and sides. Now I know there’s boats everywhere and not all of them are carrying pots of light, so I jus assume they are for transportation since the people on the ground can’t fly naturally

If we consider each area as a part of human modern life, as said in the office, we could think that making friends represents actual friends we can make a long our lives, and maybe spirits can symbolize our role models, the one we are following and taking advices from.
But then what do you think krills and crabs represent?
