After going through another playthrough of Journey earlier, I’ve come to a bit of a crossroads. There’s a lot of theories in the back of my head, but I’m stuck wondering whether Journey could be either a prequel or a sequel to Sky. It could take place in an entirely different universe or not even be the closest bit related to Sky, but I can’t help but feel a connection between the two, given the themes, lore and mechanics.

I’m going to put a few spoilers here and there because not everyone has played Journey, obviously.

If Journey is a prequel to Sky:
To begin, at the start of Sky we get told about a civilisation made from stars left in ruins, we can link this to Journey due to the fact ||not only do the murals in-game tell us that the Rythulians, or rather the Traveller’s race also came from the stars, but that the events in Journey take place a few periods after a civil war which, in turn wiped most of the Rythulians kind and left their civilisation in ruins.|| We can see some correlation here between the events of Journey and Sky with the similarity in lore, the ruins and temples in Sky being the very old remains of the Rythulian civilisation. Certain temples like the one in the Isle of Dawn have glyphs and carvings of hooded/robed figures, perhaps alluring to the Rythulians’ existence long before. ||The foundation of this civilisation was built around a very large mountain, or Eden as we know it in Sky.|| This splits into two more paths. Was the Eye of Eden a byproduct of the spirits’ and the elders’ greed for light, or has it dated much longer, since the Rythulians and their ||exploitation of the cloth animals? In Journey, the cloth animals are stated to contain a form of power which the Rythulians exploited to the point of almost wiping them from existence, perhaps the Eye of Eden is a volatile remnant of this exploitation?||

If Journey is a sequel to Sky:
To begin with, we can correlate Journey to being a possible sequel to Sky in the concept art, one piece depicting early masked travellers, these characters are much more humanoid than the Rythulians in Journey, and look strikingly similar to the spirits in Sky. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/451660316015591426/682495829562359853/image0.jpg
If Sky is a prequel to Journey, we can say that the Rythulians are descendants of either the Sky children or the spirits, the former being more likely. The Rythulians share many traits with Sky kids, like calling and having the ability to fly, over time the kingdom of Sky became dilapidated and ever more barren, I say this due to the ||vast amounts of sand you see in Journey. Sky kids donned longer capes to cope with this change, and as the sands grew, so did their capes. The capes eventually grew into robes, thus leading to the attire associated with the traveller in Journey and their race.|| Another thing to take note of are the ||war machines in Journey, which bear a striking resemblance to the krill in Sky.|| If the Rythulians were around as the same time as the krill, then they learnt much from the krill, enough to ||copy their aggressive behaviour into harbingers of mass destruction, constantly on the prowl for leftover bits of cloth, ||just like how the krill seek stars. Moving on to the Eye of Eden, if such a violent storm is the byproduct of the greed of the spirits that drove the kingdom of Sky into ruins, we can assume that it must have ||subsided and even flourished long after the events of Journey if the mountain and its summit are the same location as Eden in Sky. The pipes and ruins in Eden eventually decomposed, allowing life to flourish once more.|| How the Eye of Eden subsided boils down to two paths - either constant donations of winged light were enough to seal it permanently, or there simply was no way to settle the storm down apart from letting it die down over time.

Again, these are just my ramblings and theories I’ve pieced together over time, it could make too much sense or no sense at all.
