I wouldn’t mind as much if they hadn’t pitched this as anything other than what they have. They have made hearts harder to send randomly, killing random acts of kindness and they have made it so that most people will not engage with one another due to how far up chat is locked. If it was any other game I’d be like “that’s typical, whatever” but they have proposed this as a game to make friends

One last question about beta, is the new season coming to live play in 2 weeks... correct?

Beta has new features and bug fixes, it's quite natural to enjoy "the new" more than the current. So I'm enjoying the beta a lot in that sense.
But the gameplay loop as a whole I feel is flawed where the game is very repetitive in its nature, fundamentally.
As a social aspect, I'm having a lot of fun chirping about seeing the emotes of those who unlock Piggyback and the others.
I for one, don't care how many candles I give away to some friends or how many hearts I get. It's all temporary. The game as whole will end it's service some day, so I'm not forcing friendships or grinding candles or hearts in order to attain what I want.
I got the White Cape in live today, that was great. But it was accidentally as I noticed I now had 50 hearts. That's how I play the beta as well.
And in the beta it's fun due to the bugfixes in general. Light gathers immediately without issues for example.
People play the game differently. Some like to unlock chat a lot. I think it takes away from the game. TGC's games are a special breed. I like the Journey gameplay a lot, so I'm alright with the rebirth mechanic, and the chirping. Big fan of less is more as well. Chatting is a complex feature that I don't prefer unless it's an interesting occasion.

And to top off on the chatting part; if I wanted to chat with someone a lot I would invite them to discord or sit down with them specifically. If you play on a phone the chat is tiny and you burn away your battery.

I got the chat table rather than an expensive cape so at least I can chat when I want to. That took a lot of grinding though and I doubt many would have the time or effort to do that and would otherwise leave to do something else

Since getting it in like a day or two I’ve met more people that I’ll actually remember than in the entire time the game has been out. Going around collecting light is still beeping and booping and that’s fun so I get that side of it too but once you get home you can either log off or stay on. Beeping and booping won’t generally keep people on without a goal and the game’s content is limited so I’d see it as a good thing for the game and community to make chatting easier
Oh I should mention that in beta I have the table too and it isn’t as big of a deal because more people are unlocking chat to begin with

can't just fly up a hole to it, you have to fly up out of the crater in front of the big cave.

It feels like the servers are filling up a little better over the past day or two. Like, I haven’t been able to do 8 person puzzle because here just weren’t enough people, but we did it yesterday finally. Same for the 4 person doors in vault. Finally collected those spirits.

Yup. I’ve been collecting plants off the building in the distance and watching the krills swarming below. They do have a pattern. It’s pretty brutal, they all converge on that area in front of the gate but they do split up and go off to the outer verges for a fair while.

Ah, for the meditation spot you can go back to Home and then to the meditation again. That usually helps. I've even had it activate by going to another part of the same area, but there has to be a screen refresh between.

It really is one of the core values of the game. This is my ranking today. I believe I can say with some confidence that it isn’t about how many hearts you give to other players. I’m pretty sure I haven’t give any out in beta. I’ve used candles to make friends to the level of opening chat or holding hands.

Wow being able to skip the manta cutscene in Prairie has a way bigger impact on me than watching it, as it’s a pretty significant world event unfolding and you get to just fly around while it doesn’t it’s callings.

Also, I don’t know if this is a bug or by design but I tried to leave the game while in hidden forest in a rainy area. My cape was about 3/4 full. I waited and waited and waited while my cape continued to drain from the rain. Finally I went to some nearby fungus and tried again after replenishing so that my cape wouldn’t drain. I couldn’t go home from an area where I was on fungus. So then I tried another area. Again, full cape draining because of rain. So I tried to find a place where the rain wouldn’t get me and waited again for a good long time to be sent back home.
I wonder if this is an error or a new design feature to keep one from returning home when they are in danger?
If it’s the latter, that pretty much prevents me from exploring dangerous areas on my own time without wasting a friend’s time who might have other things in mind.
Although I prefer to travel with a friend, exploring on my own is how I’ve learned more about the map and the features of the game.

I have also experienced lagging or nothing happening when trying to teleport home. It’s annoying. I do hope it’s not a new feature. There can be any number of reasons to have to quickly return, which have nothing to do with “cheating” the game.

I might also add that several friends of mine have been discussing the game and have come to the same conclusion. That daily quests and constant grinding for candles as well as having to watch the same min-movies over and over suck way more time than we wish to devote to online playing. The result is that initially we have put in way more time than we intended into playing this game but we are all beginning to feel burnt out and ready to leave the game. So things that make the game harder and slower are just another way to convince us that it’s time to go.

The friendships are the only thing that keep us returning. So they got that part of the game right if they want player devotion. But forcing us to play on their time agenda by coercing with daily quests that you pay to play . . . That is driving me away. I bought the seasonal pass with the bonus gift of 2 passes last season just to give the developers more money and to have a special gift to give 2 friends. But then we all got caught up in the daily quest thing grinding for seasonal candles. And because I didn’t understand how the season worked when I purchased the pass, (I discovered the game late into the season) there was no hope for me to get enough candles to complete the constellation and get the deer mask at the end. So that soured me a bit as well. All that grinding to get a few special items but no hope of the one item I wanted most.

i would assume it has to do with how many friends you have/how much time you spend together/how much you unlock with them

I think it may be related to quests and just daily stuff where you can be helpful towards others.
