If the shooting star is going in a opposite direction, it means that one of your friends recently offline.
If the shooting star is going in "normal" direction, it means one of your friends online recently + the username saying "is online"

In term of the direction, depending upon which way you happen to be standing at the time they may appear to streak laterally(side to side), front to back (overhead), or diagonally. There is no absolute path or reference point for a shooting star. 😂😂
