That is usually because some of the light bounced off of other surfaces and reached the shadow part of the subject. It is called reflective light

I'm sorry if I come off as condescending sometimes. I just want to share the theory with you guys when I get the opportunity

break down the model into 3d primitives

any surface orthogonal to the direction of light gets a neutral shade, and gets closer to white the more it aligns with light rays, and closer to black the more it aligns against light rays

of course that gets more difficult the more complex the geometry (hair, clothes), but it should give you a good idea

bounce light and AO, well, that's even hearder to wrap your head around

but i just turned a simple pen drawing into a Vector line art

its not perfect, but u can convert it from vector into a rasterized layer and smooth off the little errors

boosted the Exposure and such and made sure as much of the paper was just as bright as i could get it

just to help with the conversion steps

the vector part has to match the line width or go over what it think it is, i had to boost the width it was at default as it split one line into 2 edges

but vector is not needed its just cool i guess
