Cause i think confidence is key, at the start the harsh shading looks bad but once you add in the highlights, midtones and color itll be amazing

My only advice to you is that you’re probably just used to using a one single medium, which makes it hard to try other mediums. What you need to know is that not everything that you put into one way you do art translate particularly well to other tools. Each your use for different things, so trying to go about doing what you normally do with another set of tools does not particularly work very well! It’s an entirely different skill set!

Most people don’t start out comfortable with a new set of tools, whether or not they have started with another set or not! The important part is just to not give up, and to keep experimenting until you find things that you like. Try not to find ways to equate one set of tools of another, they need to be separated in your mind.

I perhaps was talking a bit in circles there. It’s difficult to find the right words for these sorts of things.

i haven't particularly done much drawing digitally because i usually upset myself with the subpar results

I was really bad at drawing digitally too when I first started, I noticed a very vastly worse output for at least two weeks when I transitioned from paper. But I had only been drawing for about 3 full months at that point. I can’t even imagine what it would’ve been like to have several years of experience with one medium, and then attempting to pick up another.

Because I did not have a lot of experience with drawing on paper, the transition did not take particularly long, but it will probably take longer for you if you’ve been doing it professionally for a good while

The real important part is just to try sticking with it and doing more digital art for a whole month. You might not even end up being better at digital art than physical art in the amount of time, but it’s good to allow your skills to improve!

just don’t beat yourself up over the fact that it’s not going to be great for the first couple weeks

if you keep doing it, it will kill your motivation!

The way I learn was by doing irl sketch of people, it doesn't have to be extremely accurate cuz it's the way to get you to get used to to draw proportion and pose accurate to real life pose.

The main problem i see with the shading is that it lacks form and gives everything this mushy texture, likely due to the overuse of the airbrush tool. try using harder shading, thinking more about the forms and the design of your shadows

As you study how shapes and forms work in 3d space, this more or less comes naturally. So don't worry about it too much as you will come across it down the road. Just keep it in mind

It is useful for things like gradients and soft edges (I'm sure some artist can use it everywhere and make it work, too, i just personally don't). The problem is that artists that are newer to shading and form will usually use soft gradients everywhere they think should transition from light to dark without thinking about the structure of the subject, and it ends up harming the drawing instead of adding to it

Round objects have curves and shadow becomes soft when in those curves
