hmmmm I think those stuff are better left off with shapekeys?

#

Has anyone got any idea on how to make your design significant to others?

#

Like how to make your character design more meaningful to others?

queen arch
#

-# menial?

left vine
#

Maybe it’s just to create desirability in a person? But is this even possible with flat colours?

oblique badge

arent you already asked that just recently

warm spoke
queen arch
#

I mean, making your character look appealing is part of character design

queen arch
#

left vine
oblique badge
warm spoke
queen arch
#

I mean, desirability is subjective

jaunty quiver
queen arch
#

But desirable in what way? Do you want to make them sexy? Cute? Cool?

left vine
#

That’s the kind of success formula I’d desire for my characters.

queen arch
#

There's probably a lot of good yt videos on character design

left vine
queen arch
#

It would be more productive to go find those and watch them me thinks

left vine
#

Like the kind that compels artists to draw random shit miis from a Nintendo direct

queen arch
left vine
#

What the hell kind of fornuka are they drinking?

#

The placeholder characters I mean

jaunty quiver
#

i cant really help here~ as someone who just makes characters just for my preference

warm spoke
queen arch
#

The way I do character design is I start from a theme

#

Then I just throw ideas at a wall until I find something I like

#

Like, my most recent theme was a person made of people that's still somehow appealing

jaunty quiver
queen arch
#

Without a theme/idea you're working with too broad of a search space

left vine
#

Well technically, j guess that’s social media market manipulating…

#

Hmm okay, than, what’s the energy found of artists drawing others oc’s? That’s desirability right? To draw them? What key design elements to oc’s have to have to become that?

warm spoke
queen arch
#

Uh, I don't know, I don't do fanart

left vine
left vine
#

Though I’m convinced my references really ain’t anybody else’s.

#

So- I don’t want my highly unpopular activities, to reflect poorly on my characters. 😭

oblique badge
queen arch
#

I mean, I wasn't sure if anyone would share my preferences either, but they did- to the tune of 500 dollars might I add

left vine
#

How- let’s assume someone doesn’t lick up your story. What’s the next step? Make charming characters on the cover!

#

So what elements can your character shave, that’ll bring jn more eyes? More charm ofc but what else makes the success rate higher?

oblique badge
#

its more about connection to character

jaunty quiver
#

only thing i could really think of is a character tied story~ a fairly popular manga character for example gets fanart from time to time

queen arch
#

The aura farmers are beloved

#

-# Toji my goat

left vine
#

This is all so I can see how others get good at character design to that level.

jaunty quiver
#

so hard getting a fnart just by design alone

queen arch
#

Just draw for yourself, eventually you'll get good enough that people will want to see more of your stuff

#

Or at least that's how it's been in my experience

oblique badge
#

true, its better to focus on yourself than compare to others

left vine
#

Ohh not a bad point.-^-.~?

#

But surely there is a running theme I’m missing

#

Otherwise, why Arne tiny humans and humanoids appealing to ost- when I designed them to be a mix of what I mostly like and general stuff? Maybe it’s too much what I like, or not enough general stuff. Y’know. It’s a concoction with percentages.

#

I don’t know what to say. I don’t even have an audience neuroD Which I feel like running with it. No eyes means I feel less embarrassed. If I suck THAT had at art, anyway. Most my stuff is non-coloured and story-focused, so I could get away with it probably./hjk

#

Yeah embeds

left vine
#

From the ground, of a start, from the get-go!

#

At least, how to trigger it more to likely happen?

queen arch
#

Connection to character is basically how much someone related to that character/their story

oblique badge
queen arch
#

So, you need to have a story, or some kind of personality in the character

#

Convey it through poses, through what the character wears, through how they talk, walk, etc

left vine
# queen arch The aura farmers are beloved

I think I could enlarge the building to throw them off the same line just a bit

patent quarry
potent basalt
#

lineart can be awkward like that too when they connect together... so artists depending of perspective work around it... like one example I remember is drawing stylized car hitting a stylized tree... depending of perspective it looks better to leave room between tree and a car that is depicted of having hit it due otherwise it looks odd

#

also yeah when lineart aligns that it looks like part of the same line... those are fun to fix XD

welp, the mouth didnt turn out quite how i imained it (mostly cause of the teeth) but its alr for a late night drawing or something ig

#

photo is a little crooked so just imagine its perfectly centered cause it is that

#

should'a just drawn a closed mouth ngl

rocky jay
#

it worked one time but there the teeth were larger and i was using a thinner liner

#

i also went in and drew the teeth after i already finalized the mouth shape which i then ended up hating

so now the big teeth arent big enough

everything else looks good though IMO

i might just do a little trick and cover his mouth up with one of his cleaves

art is pretty demanding in a way that if you want to draw like professional illustrators you have to practice fundamentals. drawing whatever comes to mind will be pretty taxing in terms of you have to learn alot of things every time if they are different enough from each other. having references will help in that regard since you don't necessarily need to imagine, for example how the anatomy looks in a specific pose

#

practice of fundamentals is needed if you're seeking art improvements. although if you're just drawing for fun, it'll be slow because there's too much to consider but I'm pretty sure you'll get there.

Literally ONLY DANG HEAD AND LEGS. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW TO DO TORSO’S.

Should I just make an abstract figure with no upper body?

this is very abstract way to draw so you could try to make it work by just making even torso abstract

potent basalt

maybe very abstract art is just something you're well suited for... if you want to try draw something like stylized human for example then there is plenty of material online to look up as of how... and various methods to practice... artists self learn sometimes quite unusual ways like... there are people who just liked some manga so much they started to use them as references and kept drawing to learn how to do draw the same way

@buoyant gorge sorry for the ping. I remember talking about perspective heavy poses and I don't feel like reading a book or watching videos so I'm just going for it, along with trying to come up with a simpler artsyle so it doesn't take too much time and drain me every time I render something

buoyant gorge
#

The further leg is fine because its angled away from us although I would probably decrease the taper size of the further leg a bit more because the leg warmers are close to the same size here and in perspective further objects get smaller more quickly than you would expect when considering more distant objects not close to the camera.

mint root
#

how would the edges of a bottom of the leg warmers look like?

buoyant gorge
#

just imagine looking at a cylinder from below at an angle

#

you would be able to see the bottom circle (or oval in this case when its at an angle)

#

here the circle is not visible

#

so it looks like we’re looking at the bottom of the leg warmers from a birds eye view instead

mint root
#

I can draw the cylinder but I can't imagine the cloth itself

buoyant gorge
#

hmm drawing folds in perspective to put it shortly is mostly about smart use of overlapping linework

#

i can do a quick sketch to show

mint root
#

that'll be very helpful, I can't really imagine it

#

the folds itself need work tbf

buoyant gorge
buoyant gorge
#

but its easier to imagine the angle if you draw through the form

#

as if the shoe wasn’t there

#

using the cylinder as a base

#

you can see the shaded portion

#

an ellipse viewed from beneath

#

as for the folds i highlighted the lines which show that putting the line in front or behind an object depends on where you place your lines

#

its a simple principle to apply

#

but in perspective placement of lines will determine what’s in front or behind

mint root
#

hmmm, the leg warmers are very baggy so its folding in on itself, best I can think of is this

buoyant gorge
#

and for folds, that’s usually how you want to place your lines

#

you can see in the square image i took the same silhouette and just adjusted the lines

#

and the square which was in front reversed

#

to being in the back

mint root
#

yeah I can see that

buoyant gorge
#

folds are just cylinders and other primitive shapes wrapped around a bigger shape (usually cylinder)

#

and how you make them work in perspective usually is through either shading contrast or in the case of sketching, line placements

buoyant gorge
#

i can imagine seeing the hole on the bottom if the shoe wasn’t there

#

so it makes sense in perspective

#

although

#

on the very left

#

i might wrap it around a bit more

#

let me use my mobile

mint root
#

yeah compared to the previous one that one did look really flat

#

hmm

buoyant gorge
#

the blue is the additional section i added

#

its pretty jank but you can see if you imagine the leg warmers wrapping around the shoe

#

there would be a bit of thickness that goes a little further

#

than where your line ended on the top of the shoe

#

taking away the blue and red mostly would leave it like this

#

so in this case just that little bump implies a lot more envelopment of cloth around the shoe

#

because the shoe is technically in front of the blue area here (AKA the back portion of the ellipse)

mint root
#

ahh I see what you mean

buoyant gorge
#

and as i mentioned earlier, overlapping lines is how you depict it being in front

#

the version you had made it look somewhat like the entire leg warmer was in front of the shoe.

#

and that there was no part behind it

mint root
#

I don't think it'll reach that far to envelop it really since its still being held by its straps

#

would this work if its a little higher?

buoyant gorge
#

ooh that works

#

nice

mint root
#

thanks for the help, it helped not only on perspective but the folds as wellneuroHeart
