I can’t even begin drawing. It’s impossible to break out of art block. My faces are beautiful but hair is so painful to draw, it’s ridiculous. This is my art from nearly a decade ago, I haven’t been improving at all. What’s the best path I should take to help me improve?

I think this was easier back then because the direction of the shadow is so much clearer than the current piece I’m working on, where the face is straight on.

try workflow studies. watching and imitating artists who have timelapses or explanations of their workflow as they paint a piece that fits the style you want should help you deduce the aspects of your art block issues in some small part.

since his studies are mostly focused on values which is really important for realism

That's good start. That's kind of how I used to draw back in high school.

I think I was about 17 when I made this. I'm 28 now.

It's very scuffed compared to the pic I posted before because I took a few art lessons between then and was in my early 20s when I made the first pic that I posted a bit farther up.
Also the first pic is made with charcoal and a darker different kind of paper.

One lesson that may be useful is "draw like a sculptor": define the bigger shapes and volumes of the hair first, then 'carve out' the individual locks and strands.

Are you having trouble with texture or just hair shape?
It's quite simple once you understand the way hair parts into sections.

Anime hair is super exaggerated and simplified, so it's actually quite helpful to study. You could also watch footage of hair stylists, watching their process might help you understand the way it works.
Keep in mind different hair types will result in different shapes and (in my experience) gets harder to simplify the curlier the hair gets.

They were probably just used to Neuro/Evil, who themselves have vastly different proportions to the adult that you’re trying to depict.

There are alot of aspects that go into drawing so as a beginner it will be quite overwhelming

The thing about art and creativity is that when you're first starting out you have to be very patient with yourself
In other words, you have to allow yourself a period where you're "bad" at something, but work hard to practice regularly and study so that eventually you'll get the experience you need to grow

So don't give up!! Starting something new is never easy! A lot of artists you see have been doing art almost every day for their whole lives, so seeing where you're at when you don't have that same experience? You should be proud!

this is such a good take... like in a lot of places daring to critique anatomy knowledge's importance as not a sacred cow doesn't tend to go well... like context is important and people often end up perceiving critique as someone dismissing it's helpful depending of any context

I like to think it as a skill tree or something in video games... you get points and anatomy knowledge tree is something you occasionally put points to but shouldn't be perquisite to start learning in practice to keep unlocking it instead just reading it as a theory before even starting to draw to figure it out

I started skipping the lineart and just using the sketch instead, and then merging it with the base colors and rendering it from there which has made art wayyyy better for me personally and is what gives me my current art style

Before then I used to always just draw under the lineart never touching it at all which made it so restricted for me 😭 I personally find it better working with shapes than with lines

The way I render is kind of like sculpting in a way

That's all just me personally though

question to art bros, when you transitioned from trad to digital, did you ever find it difficult to get a grip of how your lines show up because of the lack of physical feedback, did you ever get used to that?

I've been getting better at digital (kinda) but sketching on trad feels so much easier because I feel the pencil lead contacting the paper

Like I see my lines show up at the screen but the pen doesn't feel like its actually "penning" for lack of a better term lol

yes, it was v difficult for me. in fact i still can't do it faithfully today, i find it easier to draw on paper and the lines never really show up how i want them to when i do digitally. Though, there is definitely a translation on skill level and understanding, i think its something you can only really get to used in time and by adapting to the changes demanded by the digital art
