# rain oriole yeah i need to work on learning hair

I struggle with the same thing ngl and my drawings regarding hair tend to turn out similar to yours. I've been thinking that maybe the problem with hair is that it's hard to convey depth using a singular colour? Using shadows and some blending in the hair might help in conveying this missing depth? I also notice that you're missing the bulge that Annie draws on Evils/Neuro's models in that perspective on the top of the head. Adding that roughly on top where the head circle guide might help as well?

heavy drift
#

so today I noticed a pretty big issue with some of my art which was that when I actually flipped it horizontal, it was very clear there were issues that my brain just, didn't see when it wasn't flipped. I'm gonna start making a habit more of flipping my canvas now but still wondering if there is anything else I could be doing to avoid this because it was pretty startling to see

misty pendant
#

Here's two images I drew where I've experimented with blending, mainly in the face, but I'm trying to learn how to do it on the hair as well.

rain oriole
mint root
icy vale
misty pendant
# rain oriole hm maybe its also that i group the hair too much and it turns flat

Yes, that could also be an issue. But I'm unsure if that's the absolute solution. Some artists seem to do that, but some seem to make it work while grouping alot. Anni's drawings seem to favour grouped hair tufts more than other artists so it's not so much "your fault" as it is the specific design of the character. Looking at Evil and Neuro, their hair tends to be quite uniform on the top while splitting off more at the bottom. If we want to stay true to the model, we kinda have to group.

mint root
oblique badge
#

Its not that deep guys, if you want object to be less flat just add shadows

#

Indeed, that was my original suggestion.

icy vale

You can convey depth with proper line placements

oblique badge

Well, yes, you can just use the lines

#

I'm just talking specifically about these cases

Also hair behaves in a certain way, and as long as you get that you're good

misty pendant
#

Yeah, drawing hair in motion isn't as hard as drawing hair at rest imo.

rain oriole
#

Here I switched from Krita to GIMP and quickly added some color to my character's hair and used the smudge tool to try and make hair seem more natural, but the problem I've ran into now is that how I made the conversion doesn't preserve layers so it's smudging the image as a whole. However it might showcase a method (albeit imperfect) to give more depth and hair-like properties.

#

I don't know where the smudge tool is in Krita or if it even has one. 😦

mint badge

Here's a better example of blending hair, now there's more of sense of volume and depth but the heavy blending clashes with the artstyle!

Instead of drawing a specific character, which has the unintentional side effect of locking you into the habit of only being able to draw said characters, it’d probably be easier looking for resources online that’ll help with tackling the individual issues you want to fix in art, whether it be faces, hands, anatomy, perspective, proportions, shading, etc. Build up your visual library and fundamentals, and you’ll be able to adapt to drawing pretty much anything, and by extension, the neuroverse fanart.

after that, a quick look at any neuro character sheet would probably be much easier to sketch than it had been before

i don’t have a point of comparison to work with since i don’t know your earlier pieces, but you could widen the face a tad bit, especially around the eye’s edges. There’s a complete separate plane of face to the right and left of each eye (see asaro head for reference), which, under non-anime proportions usually a half-eye length in distance away from the edge of the eye (for anime its a bit smaller). You could also raise the position of the mouth a bit to make it more proportionally correct (which would give the impression of a younger face) or lengthen the overall bottom taper of the jaw to chin area (giving the impression of an older face). These things, once recognized, become easier to adjust.

Drawing digitally has many rewards. I started out sketching traditionally, but going digital allows you to more easily start working in layers which can make the process of complex images a bit easier.

Ever since I started I haven't gone back.

I main digital now mostly too for those same reasons, though I always do my art studies in trad. For me, getting too used to the editing tools digital provides cause me to fall behind in certain areas of linework and proportions and i find not having those advantages when drawing forces me to work on and improve my base drawing skills, which translates well to digital from an efficiency standpoint.

I feel like I wouldn’t be doing the idea of art justice, if I kept falling two steps back with subsequent pieces. I still want to be where I thought I could’ve been, had I not given up on improving all those years ago. But I get what you mean. I’ll try to lighten up my self-criticism.

We are our own worst critics. Art is such a field that it's saturated by many, many talented individuals so one becomes constantly humbled by their skills. It looks like you're of the same mindset as myself and want to strive to refine your skills too and that's very admirable. It's never too late to learn and our wealth of experience still serves us now and will make the process easier than it was back then.

Try something like this. Take your old drawings as a layer in a digital arts suite like Krita or GIMP, then draw over them in a new layer, using your old work as a guide. That can help you refresh your memories on how to do past art.

once we have enough of a visual library, then we can afford to expand more into the realm of imagination

#

tho the references will always be a helpful resource

mint root
misty pendant
#

When I draw Neuro or Evil I always go from a reference image, because otherwise I'd go off-model. And if you think about it, art is all about copying. When we draw, even if we don't have refence images we are just trying to copy things we've seen in real life.

buoyant gorge
#

yeah, art isn’t just pure imagination. its not like michaelangelo suddenly became a deity of painting overnight. he copies, he picks out useful elements, he repeats the process, and once it improves, he tries to apply it in an original piece.

misty pendant
#

The things we put on the parchment has no meaning without the context of its existence. That's why we copy.

mint root
buoyant gorge

Never feel bad about copying purely for the sake of learning.

#

Without it, I don’t even know if I would have improved at all.

lunar garden
buoyant gorge
#

u have to break it down into components and study just those components

#

and then it starts becoming clear once all the individual components get combined into the whole

#

these days, im actually starting to understand artists techniques just by looking at a piece. i only used to be overwhelmed a few years back looking at pro artists.

#

without understanding at all how they do what they did

mint root
buoyant gorge
#

plus, you have a vast amount of resources at your disposal. A helpful art community, huge numbers of videos and books, and even other artists to look over. It is entirely possible to set up a game plan that’ll fasttrack your way into an improved version of yourself in just a year or two.

mint root
#

Also proper construction will make things alot easier

lunar garden
#

i try to, but its hard when i don't get how they get that result

misty pendant
#

I suspect that studying artists who aren't as skilled might be better because their art might give away more of their methods.

mint root
lunar garden
#

well..if i am being honest everyone including me in class took art due to it being easy to get marks without studying..

buoyant gorge
#

Yeah like Eclid said, you could ask your fellow artists. You don’t have to feel like you have to push your way through the dark to find the answer. Trust me, I did that, and I don’t want another artist to suffer as I did. It wasn’t until about 2021 ish that I seriously sat down and tried to find out exactly what was wrong, asked ppl for advice, asked others to look over my pieces, constantly watched vids, read books, etc. The process then became easier and easier as time went on.

This is the result of just 2 years of me learning from 2021-2023 redrawing the same character.

buoyant gorge

so why not multitask a bit

#

A good place to always start is to ignore colors for now and only focus on linework and creating characters using a solid foundation of sketching

you could improve your speed at reading general form. Things that help with that is the ā€œenvelopeā€ technique (probably on YouTube), or drawing in boxes, 60 sec practices on contours using gestures like on quickposes.com. Drawing by shoulder for broader strokes, while drawing with wrist for details helps a lot. Also different pen grips and even changing your hand position helps with creating better lines facing different directions. In general, having the ability to capture the general shape and form without any detail is a quick way to improve general speed.

then take the final results of your drawing, compare them against the reference, make quick notes on what feels different, diagnose the exact problem, repeat it, but with that problem corrected

mint root

tho i’ve worked around that recently by just reducing the time it takes for me to shade

so i study a lot on things to make my workflow more efficient
