I think I am tbh
Yeah I pretty much just scrapped my idea that was my backup idea after my first one already seemed too complex. Scrapped the first one day before the jam. Now I'm trying to come up with something much simpler that maybe can still be done.
Half the time is up and I only now realized I'm basically building an XCOM clone without enemies

I've been trying to make games for years now, learned 3d design, texturing, ui design, blah blah blah but never got my ass up to actually make something 
There are about 12 unifinished games on my drive, and here I'm starting my 13th
i think thats at least better than forcing yourself to continue with a project and ending up ruining the hobby for yourself
ive only ever finished one game and it was very simple
Pretty much, just sucks when you try to get a foot into the industry
Getting just one done is a huge step many don't make
I am now using: Blender, Photoshop, Unity 6, Audacity, Substance Painter 3d, Jetbrains Rider all at the same time. My pc is dying help

Damn my plan was for the character to evolve from Hiyori into either neuro or evil upon defeating the first boss and then they can play with fun new mechanics, but it looks like I will only be able to code up to the first boss at best 
Been working on a vampire survivors type game and I wanted Evil to be playable as well but sadly I think she will be forgotten again. I get how you feel :(
i think i made a somewhat dumb decision, I made a Neuro-wars (Advance wars with neuro stuff), i think i have a good chunk of the neuro family along with the swarm, units also gain buffs from other units, aka if evil is alone with only the swarm, she gains bonus stats, stuff like that

never really messed with topdowns but usually youd write a logic check to check the position of the spot from where you want to instantiate the bullet from, and if it is negative (aka less than the gameobject x value) then you make it -2 instead of +2

Really wanted to make a game for this jam but I'm just gonna cancel it. I feel like I'm barely 5% in with only half the time left, even with the shortcuts of using free assets. Just don't feel like spending every waking hour under stress like last year. I envy everyone who manages to produce such amazing games in a short period of time, especially solo. Looking forward to seeing everyone's cool stuff 
for the game jam im probably like 10% done, but for a full game im not even 1% of the way lol
even if you dont think you can make the deadline you can still have fun with it, otherwise why participate if its not fun 
I'm mostly stuck on refining the base mechanics like making sure the shooting feels fun.
various issues with sprites mostly leading to me having to do complicated changes
like locking it so the player can only shoot towards the direction they are facing because i couldn't fix the various issues with the player shooting behind them

Turns out a game jam is just a scheduling nightmare for me rather than an incentive to do game dev.
I'd love to take more time on the game as well but if I don't have any deadlines, I feel like I now have no excuse not to make it perfect and that's demotivating in itself.

as with anything i take from someone else, if something doesnt work the way i want i have to just live with it... cinemachine is pretty nice by default but when you want to configure it to work better for your game its quite a pain in the ass (for me at least)

I'm stuck in a hellloop of changing the same values over and over, compiling, hitting play, saying "yup, still wrong", then doing it again

its the worst part but its one of the most important parts
i usually setup a way to change the values from in the game and then just copy them into the editor so i dont have to deal with this 
my game has the issue that idk how to balance it, it will be either too hard or too easy
i think on stream, not sure tho. havent checked itch in a bit and might have forgotten

it uses the same variable for two separate if statements, so i cant hardcode it. it depends on thecurrent situation
aka if the player is facing right, the minangle and maxangle are one thing, if they are facing left, its another
but both use the same variables, it just gets set depending on the player's direction

i lock the mouse to the middle and then move around a gameobject by just adding the mouse delta every frame, so never taking mouse pos even if that's what prob would have been much easier

might have to add some sort of raycast from the turret to see if they can see the player and then give a slight delay before they start firing when they see you
also, bullet hells usually have slower bullets than you expect. with fast bullets you're not really dodging the bullets themselves, but rather the way your predict the enemy will shoot

human brain isn't very fast so even if the player is really fast you can't always use it to your advantage

the thing is, there is no spread, so YOU control the aim of the enemies
you can 100% predict where the rounds will go, it is entirely deterministic
achieved maximum giga neuro effect
so the best way to play the game, is to roll everywhere, hit max neuro effect, and shoot the turrets while changing direction
its ended up becoming an aggressively fun gameplay loop

i'm making the swarm the enemies and vedal the player. makes sense since vedal hates us 
my game's plot is as such:
Start as Hiyori, Vedal is cooking you a new body
Destroy enemies for (???)
Defeat Anny, the first boss to evolve into either Neuro or Evil
Final boss is Vedal trying to stop you from getting the perfect body
i got the corner to continually deflect rounds the wrong way
cleared the game in 1 life
vedal takes the perfect body and that's why he's the final boss 
okay it only took me a few hours of practice
time to make scene 3 and the story elements

im gonna shower first
That's why I might make the first few wave enemies variations of tuffee, like tuffee in a tank, tuffee suicide bomber rushing the cloning pod, etc. Then once anny is defeated, the next boss would be another vtuber such as camilla, and for the final waves, vedal turns the swarm against you. Needless to say all incredibly out of scope. I'll be lucky if i get to code anny at all

this also seems to work the same, but here mainCDCoroutine2 is of type "Coroutine". but the same of just storing the return as a variable then probably
if you put the coroutine as a variable, you can reference it, in this case you won't have a duplicate coroutine running
I think it will be easier to stop that one if you store it as variable
IE if you use EX2, you have a chance to duplicate
cause you're starting a new instance of the IEnumerator StartMainCD()
the coroutine flips "fireReady" to true. so in the example of a duplicate it could end up as
duplicate running -> first finishes -> fire weapon -> second finishes -> immediately fire weapon again

Layna is the first party member you get (literally on level 2) and because of this I wanted her to be a healer, but I also decided to give her attack abilities
She deals damage which she converts to healing, which in turn further converts to attack if the person healed is already at max hp... which, if she does on herself, causes her to deal MORE damage...
did I make her too OP? if so how should I nerf her lmao
impossible to say without knowing what the rest of the balancing is like. but i guess you could make it so the passive only applies to Layna's healing instead of all healing

as long as there is 1 interesting feature the rest doesnt matter
always depends on the rest of the abilities and ways damage works. but seems very strong of a character especially if you get them early on 
Also probably change it to a buff type that expires after x number of attacks or seconds, and limit number of stacks

The premise is just your typical tropey/cliched dating sim set in the 90s staring Neuro and some Neuroverse character, during the story some Anachronism pops up with Neuro mistakenly refering stuff from present time (2024) while it's supposed to happen during the 90s (1997 to be more precise) then as it goes one the "simulation" starts to break appart.
Actually unique premise!
Oh and the game is programmed on gameboy, already finished the engine and made some assets but I dont think I'll make it in time with the story

Ah, the joy of getting stuck spending time refactoring the junk code I wrote at the start of the jam... only less than 29 hours left of the jam, and while I think I'll get something game-like up and running, I still have no idea how I'll have time to look at art, sound and game-balance 
I really should look into committing teaming up with some non-programmer for my next jam... The biggest reason I end up not being able to finish jams, is having to split my focus so much...

Yeah, just doing one thing can be draining. It's nice to break it up. But at least for me, it gets really distracting having to bounce between so many things. Or I end up spending to much time on one difficult part, I end up neglecting others...
Also, since I'm not as experienced in other fields as I'm in coding, I spend much longer doing those things than someone more familiar with them, which feels frustrating when time is tight.
I actually know exactly how much work I have left to do. I'd planned it out really well, so it's not even about scope creep.
It's just that I now know with 100% certainty that even if I worked every hour until deadline, I wouldn't make it. And that's just kind of depressing

It felt easier to balance in one or two weeks jams I've done before, because I've got more time to allocate; "Today I do code, and tomorrow I look at art and gfx."
I had really no plan going in, came up with an idea on the spot, and just started working. ๐ I'm no pro at gamejams by any means, but I am a webdeveloper, and I've done a few jams now, so know it's important to just focus on getting something working first and then iterate. It's really hard not to over-scope, even if you try to be realistic, so you really have to focus on the most important parts, and consider everything else a "nice-to-have".

you just have to refactor all your inputs and game states (if you didn't already plan them well enough), and the intergration shouldn't be too hard
y'know when you decide to not look up a better way to do something because you're just throwing together something quick and you don't need it to be good but then it turns out to take much more time than if you'd have just looked up the proper way to do things

i'm making a menu to allow the player to pick aspects of their ship (player character) to upgrade. I haven't really done any menues in unity before but i ended up throwing together a script with one method and variable for each possible button. then i plan to just assign each button to the methods and have clicking them increase the "upgrade lvl" or whatever of it. problem is there's 25 buttons and i have to assign each manually
not even sure if this is going to work lmao
also, right when i was writing down what i was doing i realized i didn't have to add the values of the upgrades to each method, i can just have "upgrade levels" and have the power increase with each upgrade level why did i do this to myself
