#

Since log is a function

glad path
#

yes

#

but functions can be expressed without parenthesis

#

eg sin x instead of sin(x)

opaque wharf
#

Because if the argument is not a pure number, you'd need to parenthesize them anyway

glad path
#

or you could just do log(base, num)

opaque wharf
#

But people will argue between base, num and num, base

#

I think num, base is stupid tho

I think it's incredibly funny that running an A2 in a server at home instead of some jank consumer solution was a notible point in my first interview

true hemlock
#

fair, interviewers aren't the hardware manager so they'd usually think its some sort of enterprise supercomputer parts or something when you mentioned that its an "enterprise grade hardware"

#

very overclockable

#

pog, its a cherry picked gb206

quick condor
#

No it's specifically that the A2 is actually recognized by Dell's bmc which adjusts fan speed according to gpu temperature. It's literally a scaled down version of the systems I'd be working on xe9860s

#

And yes technical interview is with a lead technician

true hemlock
#

so i suppose they found the exact guy to work with their non beefy enterprise office workstation systems

who is familiar with the A2

Passive cooled gpu that has to communicate with the server BMC to control server fan speed

true hemlock

okay that makes more sense

#

they want you to manage a U chassis server

#

good ig

#

right, my h100 also has passive cooling heatsink alongside with both my a100

#

though mine is a 7U chassis

quick condor
#

Well hundreds of them but tbh doesn't matter if it's 100 XE9860s with h100s or a R640 with an A2, the concept is the same

true hemlock
#

r640 with an A2 is meant for basic office workstation

the h100 systems are probably for ai

FeelsStrongMan every day the bugs get worse

#

there seems to be no end to it

#

i made a small code change it ended up completely bricking unity

#

this one is admittedly my fault instead of unity's but i dont really know how to fix it

rough bloom
#

NeurOhISee what change? completely bricking it seems impressive

real sierra
#

i had a hacky Task.Run executing an async call from a synchronous context

#

but the stuff it was calling got sad that it wasn't on the main thread so i thought i'd try removing a layer of encapsulation

#

whatever i did seems to have caused thread deadlock

rough bloom
#

async

#

ye sounds bad

real sierra
#

this is a problem i really need a good solution to tbh

#

its a whole can of worms

rough bloom
#

Unity not good with that IIRC

real sierra
#

so many of the calling functions are synchronous because the signature is predefined

#

but any networked RPC calls that want to return values must be called asynchronously

frozen hollow
#

Can you use coroutines to query these

real sierra
#

but then unity functions can only be called from the main thread so you cant call them from within any of the tasking threads used by async

frozen hollow
#

isn't that the sort of pseudo async you can use to unlock your thread

real sierra
#

explain it to me like im 5

#

i started using C# for the first time three days ago

frozen hollow
#

basically cause it's on a game loop you can't hang on stuff between frames

#

so coroutines like return to look at things across frames

#

I don't know if it's a fit for your specific issue btw

rough bloom
#

ye, it's basically Unity's brand of async I think

frozen hollow
#

I remember using a plugin like "better coroutines" that wrapped the task runner within the Unity stuff, which IIRC is older than the task runner stuff that now exists

#

I have to imagine they've improved things since I last touched it..

rough bloom
#

Coroutines are also useful for handling long asynchronous operations, such as waiting for HTTP transfers, asset loads, or file I/O to complete.
mhm thank you Unity docs
not sure if RPC also fits in there but would work probably

warped narwhal
#

Coroutines are cooperative async routines.

Unlike most async which gets preempted, coroutines get to choose when they await, and they can return a value when doing so.

This lets you stream async results over time, rather than having to wait for everything to be ready at once

frozen hollow
#

One thing I do remember - their performance was awful out the box

#

that's more an issue if you used tons of them

#

and it was like a state machine that checked up on the process every time it was called (like in OnUpdate()) so it didn't try to return back to a function that had ended 300 frames ago

yes it gives layers

#

i mean scale z

#

for collisions its ignored i think?

frozen hollow
#

that's the cheap way to do the z layer yeah

obsidian mantle
#

i felt like 2d collider is 3d collider but z is ignored

frozen hollow
#

yes

obsidian mantle
#

then why separate

frozen hollow
#

I don't remember why they have the 2d versions - I thought it was practically syntactic sugar?

obsidian mantle
#

people said its different physics engine

#

however you can slam both 2d and 3d colliders into both 2d or 3d i think

#

so it looks like they both work on both engines

#

but if you put 3d collider in 2d world they never collide 3d-wise because z is scaled to 0 and they never really intersect

#

i guess the game itself doesnt know if its 2d or 3d

#

its all 3d

#

so you have to explicitly tell it that these colliders are 2d

#

thonk is this possible explanation?

rough bloom
#

you have to tell it anyway, the shapes are just different

obsidian mantle
#

they should have called 3d collider "collider3d" and not just "collider"

frozen hollow
#

now that I think is because Unity originally was meant to be specifically 3d and people "hacked" it using sprites and infinite Z space for colliders

#

I think it carries a lot of legacy jank - I hope godot or something can keep it down

muted jasper

no but its a factor

no. ram prices raised because more people wanted ram.

and there was only a fixed amount of ram

NAND is what's driving the price of ram. From October to Novemebr, the unit price of NAND went from $6 to $27

azure lynx
#

price of everything is 100% due to demand. if there is no demand for something you won't sell it at any price.

quick condor
#

actually more than the plating and its 24k

azure lynx
#

and demand varies due to availability. and low availability can have multiple causes

unkempt citrus
#

Gold has been rising, but its been rising since 2023. The ram price is much more recent and is just due to Sam Altman

quick condor
#

Its not the lithography, gold bond wires connect the silicon to the bga pads

muted jasper
#

I mean, maybe gold prices have to do something with raise of prices but it's clearly not the core of it, so... what's the argument about anyway

olive sable
unkempt citrus
#

RAM prices were falling since COVID until October 25 because there was an oversupply

unkempt citrus
#

Gold has been rising since late 2023 after the US and EU froze Russia's bank accounts

#

And then rising further as the US becomes more instable

#

Now RAM spiked because there's undersupply after some fucker bought 40% of the world's supply above market rates

azure lynx
#

"For example, according to the World Gold Council, a typical cell phone may contain 50 mg of gold, worth about three dollars. But since nearly one billion cell phones are produced each year, a gold value of US$2.82 (equivalent to $3 in 2024) in each phone adds to US$2.82 billion in gold from just this application (equivalent to $3,030,040,937 in 2024)."

#

not a whole lot of gold

muted jasper
#

There's another viewpoint - what if raise of gold prices caused by raise of RAM demand, how about that?

unkempt citrus
#

Timeline makes no sense for that

#

You could make that argument for silver but not gold

quick condor
#

IDK I was just saying that ram prices (average not extreme examples) wolnt exceed the price of gold as higher prices of ram lead to increase in supply pressure which results in more demand for raw resources meaning more demand for gold

unkempt citrus
#

We know who is buying the Gold though, and it's not electronics manufacturers

olive sable
unkempt citrus
#

It's banks

#

They're buying gold because they can no longer trust the US

Gold has now exceeded the US treasury as the greatest store of wealth for banks for the first time since the end of ww2
