And this is confusing, hence don't do that
Because if the argument is not a pure number, you'd need to parenthesize them anyway
or you could just do log(base, num)
That could work
But people will argue between base, num and num, base
I think num, base is stupid tho
13950HX es
5060 lp
14900HX modt board combo
all arrived
$150 + $250 + $350 respectively
I think it's incredibly funny that running an A2 in a server at home instead of some jank consumer solution was a notible point in my first interview
fair, interviewers aren't the hardware manager so they'd usually think its some sort of enterprise supercomputer parts or something when you mentioned that its an "enterprise grade hardware"
very overclockable
pog, its a cherry picked gb206
No it's specifically that the A2 is actually recognized by Dell's bmc which adjusts fan speed according to gpu temperature. It's literally a scaled down version of the systems I'd be working on xe9860s
And yes technical interview is with a lead technician
so i suppose they found the exact guy to work with their non beefy enterprise office workstation systems
who is familiar with the A2
anyways
13950HX engineering sample
loved the bga1964 to lga1700 translation
Yes non beefy Dell XE9860s with 8x H100s as well as the new Blackwell build out ๐
wtf the a2 even have to do with that
its not even an enterprise card
not the one that does hpc
Passive cooled gpu that has to communicate with the server BMC to control server fan speed
okay that makes more sense
they want you to manage a U chassis server
good ig
right, my h100 also has passive cooling heatsink alongside with both my a100

though mine is a 7U chassis
Well hundreds of them but tbh doesn't matter if it's 100 XE9860s with h100s or a R640 with an A2, the concept is the same
r640 with an A2 is meant for basic office workstation
app so far
the h100 systems are probably for ai
It is
i would be more impressed if its for actual hpc workload tbh
Clustering for up to 4088 h100s so AI/hpc
wouldn't consider ai and hpc the same
The clustering is designed for either...
I mean whoever spends the money to rent dedicated compute... Doesn't matter who it is
Here we use comma for the decimals. So sure i can paypal you 30 bucks
concluding my new year shopping ig unless if my 18x 3090 arrives exactly this month somehow
also still waiting for my 6x 22tb sas
Nice
top one is 3090 i got for supposedly $400 but ended up only paying $150 total
wait
discord doesnt like it but its not actually a download
Don't miss this!
its too sketchy even for discord
it's pretending to be google. therefore it is evil.

^^^
lmao
this is the greatest and worst website ever devised
also new actually good discord feature
hi, can I take the r from your name please
oh for fucks sake automod
really just pinged all the mods
I wonder if those fake links are actually safe. Cuz the forwarding might be bad
they are i think
anyways, fun fact, ~48,620 discord accounts are subbed to the events ping role
my bad mods
om
i guess it did make the links suspicous
no problem, we'll just sign ur soul away
the same website for making the link btw
i should clarify
47,509 discord accounts sub to the schedule ping role
and 48,487 accounts are part of tutel safari

when do we do the dillydallying code golf sessions
code golf?
wasting time writing needlessly convoluted code, usually oneliners
oh yeah I just did that a couple days ago
nice
that was one line and I could've made it worse
That's a nicer way than having a separate check before an indent
https://web-safe.link/LL7U8X_secure_login_page.js
wait hold on
Continue to your destination
ok this is peak
secure_login_page.js lmfao
i chained a bunch
wait LOL
I don't like making py some_variable = None if some_condition: some_variable = condition_dependent_value
my browser must've contracted some sort of internet disease
I clicked the link and while I as typing here I saw my new tab icon flash 3 or 4 times
probably because it was like 5 redirects
"facebook.web-safe" sad thing is, some people would actually think it to be a real website
now I'm sad
no

the purpose of the links is to try get people to be suspicious. or to identify people who are terrible at checking links and who should really not have email.
ig
these are like the links in phishing attacks
That's something some companies do on their workers, apparently. Fake coupons or something.
I approve of it, but I wish it were practiced more globally
As in, for ordinary people, too
"to keep your gmail, you must correctly not respond to a our phishing attacks"
"no more emails from grandma this week. she clicked a link from "her bank" and now she has to get her email license again"
yup, security-concious companies do that
This could actually be a good practice
ngl I thought you put a rickroll there but localhost also makes sense
If grandma must talk, she can do it with her mouth over the phone
See, the only thing is
I bloody hate that having a fake phone number is possible
I thought the whole concept was to have a unique phone ID only through which someone can reach your phone
and no one can pretend to be you
nice progress
putting the issue of NNs now being capable of copying people's voices near perfectly aside
damn missed opportunity
toggles, htats all for today
Hello I hope the #programming goes well
going alright
I just found out https://discord.com/api/v9/guilds/{gid}/roles/{rid}/member-ids requires auth
Hem
probably because the auth requires that the user be in the guild first? idk
Sounds about right
anyways, this path allows you to get the list of IDs associated with members of a role (if you couldn't tell by the path)
Hello @humble bronze, Iโm deeply sorry for the ping, but I need some help, If I could, I would like the url to the Tuya api for the lavalamp, not to put directly into my app, but to extend it to a api on my domain, to use for my app, NormSync, normsync is a application for iOS and android that I am developing that will change your lights to neuros lavalamp. Here is a photo of the app so far. Many people in the community would like this app, as I asked on reddit, see https://www.reddit.com/r/NeuroSama/comments/1qciy6i/how_would_you_guys_like_a_software_that_changes/.
You pinged the wrong person
what the hell is a s3mm.dll
i don't think this is the right vedal, lucky
saved
Speaking of sus sites
speaking of sus sites https://microsoft.web-safe.link/lottery_yvELNO_download_now.jar
Follow this link
Discord just marked me as a chump. Disgraceful
its not even a download lmao
Nice URL processing technique
mods quick unperson this person
bro you've been here for a goddamn while you should know not to ping vedal, you're lucky he's not @/vedal987
Maybe he meant weevil
you gave me severe internal bleeding (and cringe)
did you get trapped by my link

I opened it expecting some webface. That was certainly not one of them, but its classy for sure
mine???
This one!!!!!

oh no /tenor ip grabber
A website that isnt an ip grabber is a bad website
ahahaha
So YouTube is bad?
rick roll'd
Ah I see
Youtube grabs your IP
I remember the first time I actually got rick rolled
Following a download link to some "free game"
That was...
I don't even know how I can describe how betrayed I felt, but it was a wake up call
"free minecraftdownload now no virus"
Ik that BUT it's purpose isn't to grab ips
Its purpose is to give you brain rot to watch mindlessly
But it still grabs IPs
Yea
a website that doesn't get your IP is a website that sucks
no, a website that doesn't get your IP isn't a website
I think it was GTA IV
or maybe Halo 2
lol
das the joke
you need to receive an IP address to be able to reply to requests
this is true
the joke isn't there, because a website that doesn't get your IP is not a website at all (or at least not a functional one)
All my boys HATE ipv6
Thats the joke
I know that but I was under the impression that you were making a joke about all websites that don't take your IP for doxing reasons suck
Every website is an IP grabber
Is that better or worse than debugging a NAT issue
Hello @cinder trellis , Iโm deeply sorry for the ping, but I need some help, If I could, I would like the url to the Tuya api for the lavalamp, not to put directly into my app, but to extend it to a api on my domain, to use for my app, NormSync, normsync is a application for iOS and android that I am developing that will change your lights to neuros lavalamp. technically if you want you can just send a fake/not your IP to a website and just not care, as long as you don't need the results back
there's ways to do that but it's not prominent because, you know, it's not fucking useful lmao
what the aga
this fucking guy
IPv6 is a passing fad
well it is if you want to ddos
Shouldn't have told them the first ping wasn't real Vedal
2nd ping in like the last 2 hours about this topic
is this a real take
Its true though. Once IPv8 comes out, IPv6 while be gone
IPv4 will still be kicking around tho
Hell no.
Why would we need IPv8?
surely humanity would cease existing before IPv8
so we can give each individual IC an IP of course
each electron gets an IP address
We'd need like 2`128 computers (very big number) to fill up IPv6 completely
Because some jack ass would want developers to cry trying to store it in memory efficiently
Hem

vedal went offline
what have we done
No clue
Clearly we must start sacrificing chatters to bring him back
Yes!!! you are first

In the flames you go
Flames are very slow

he got mentioned
They still burn tho
no ytsodacan (person who last pinged ved) should be sacced
Into the flames you go
could be worse, could be this dude

Ts is sad
D1 troll activities
i put so much work into #1326303411041206303 for newcomers and they break the rules instead
"Read"? That's almost as bad as "Shower"
Ewwwwwwwwww

Oh hey, good to know that's a thing
It is so hidden and tucked away I never knew
is discord a forum or a chatting app?
Could be both I suppose
Its a messaging service
true
my favorite kind of git commit changes
happy birthday shiro!

i have no idea, it require flag that i not know
let me run git show --help :kek:
we don't even have enough ram to put the ipv4 in
there only 2^32 address in the internet
even less consider 10. 192.168. 172.
and i have 3 of them

my next function:
void pass() {}
cant compile on some compilers, ub
it appears shiro's wish was weak, for i set the bar so low
lack of access modifier causes it to override some ancient library function of the same name and crashes the runtime environment
ok ok let's fix this
nah, it will be just c compiler without void type support
int happyBirthdayShiro() { return 26; }
this function can be compiler everywhere
int foooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo(){ return 0;}
another bug, im not 26
are you sure
foo? ๐
actually how old am i
not yet/anymore

yeah it would be 300+ birthdays already
idk when it started tho...
oh god morning brain can't english yet
i am ... 22 soon
For several years fork like 18 to 20 my default answer if someone asked me my age was 16
After that it switched to 23
chance that this name will conflict with anything is almost zero
uuid?
some ancient compilers also doesnt support static, so have to be
oh god
is this why
package names
i never explicitly thought that thought before

holy L bell labs
although it's technically more powerful
so it might have been a conscious choice
didnt found, but i found -d / -w // --ignore-space-change /--ignore-all-space
when all your files have some traits, like <libname>_filename_subformat.format
it much easier to reflect on them
im too stupid to be in this channel. reading this gave me a headache. cheers lads

kek. but you're still here, nonetheless
pat pat fix head?
its okay im too stupid to be here as well
but i think a bit of stupid helps keep the average iq down
makes it more accessible
last 2 month instead of programming as hobby at home, i mod civ6 toward gameplay i like
or at least thats what i tell myself
No thorts he'd empti
instead of playing the game kek
with enough mods you'll someday have an exact replica of civ 5
I wanna get into coding and all that but I know that ill do it for a month then realise that im better off playing CoD and watching femboy Vtubers
There's a pin for how to get started with programming
cheers m8
nope, if you will start to enjoy codding, unless you encounter something that shake your mind more, you will learn/code/read only about CS
it was just civ for me after friend show me this game
1000 hours in steam in 6 month
(actual only 500 cuz i keep it overnight sometimes)
At its core programming is about logic and that's always useful
gotta find a reason to learn coding, so coding becomes a tool and not the goal
And learning to build things and problem solve will always be good
try bbg + RHAI + lategame ai
and also if you want longer games - zee's mods
also for sure ui mods, cuz without them civ is garbage
"may you be blessed" for programmers
learning interrupts at implementation lvl gave me headache, and i stopped at some point, i dont understand what exactly allow cpu to switch context so freely; cant find good source, linux dev book talk about them from code perspective only
tell me how is it about logic; programming is about implementations
CODING is about logic
May your stackoverflow answers be useful
Yeah, I was actually thinking to find something, maybe in aid of AI development. Some ideas maybe. "Prompt engineering" or whatever, but looks like ppl don't discuss such things here. Or I wasn't looking good enough
people talk about how to make your own neuro-sama at least once a day
they've done so for the last 3 years without stop
reasonable
more ml guys
and maybe one day chatbots will become usefull
right now they all garbage
There was a flow chart at some point
No, I don't mean my own neuro. I just recently realized you can constantly modify system prompt, lol
So was hoping to see people discuss some tricks or something. Dunno. Or maybe where to start more efficiently, cuz I was thinking for too long and can't start properly, too many options and stuff
"Prompt engineering" = sloperator = not engineering; rather designing, but you still need at least one engineer
Well maybe. But I can't even do that, llm often doesn't understand what I want from it. I was thinking of vague concept of "weight", like making a system that kind of brings some stakes, kind of grounds llm to something, but I can't even get it to tell me time. Yeah, llm noobie here
I mean, I provide it current time but it keeps advancing it for no reason and I should write paragraphs to make it tell me the time I give it instead of making it up or "role playing it"
I believe retrieval of such exact information should be a tool call?
Not something it should remember
Probably, maybe. I didn't touch tools yet
Abstract ALL the things!
Do it for the lulz
Here's a fun challenge. How far can you abstract away from a given thing that your eyes see? Take a cat for example.
Cat becomes mammal, which becomes animal, which becomes a living creature, which becomes an acting entity, which becomes a functioning thing, which becomes an instance, which becomes a proof/existence, which becomes itself (?). It could go a different way, too
when you build agentic you always need to fix it after because of this it not called software dev anymore instead it called AI plumper .
rrr
hi konii
A quantum wave function

Or a vibrating 11-D string if you're into that
I wonder how harder would it be to get AI work not on llm, but on actual neural network, to step away from llm's main structural problem which is cycle "wait for input -> process this input -> send result -> repeat".
Which works by "ticks" and not properly "continuous"...
Shirooo, someone comes up with the same idea as you
bwaa
no I'm not into strings I'm an ordinary human interested in ordinary humans
Imagine your computer slows down so much it loses the icons of your default programs
I mean, what Vedal did is insane by its own rights, but i feel like soon they will hit the wall of that exact llm main problem - it might be not able to do "thinking ticks" fast enough
Now whether this is exclusive to low-battery laptops on charge being low performance because of charging, or if its because of windows 11, I don't know
I don't have $30.000, but I have this
I've been wondering about this myself - about modularizing the thought process into actual distinct neural network models, rather than tying all functionality up into the single language model
tho I guess the image processing and generation models are already distinct elements
It could be because of both at the same time
i got optix to work in blender on nix
honeslty idk why its working
it failed to build when installing from the git repo, and when i went back to how i did it before it suddenly worked
this joke transcends dimensions
They can smell fear and despair

Did you build blender with cuda support
yep
cudaPackages.cudatoolkit
(blender.override {
cudaSupport = true;
})
idk if i even need the first one
i may have jsut needed to reboot or something and thats why the old one works now
You shouldn't need the first one

btw, how does rebuilding work with programs that keep being open?
does it just use the version of the program stored from the old nix generation?
There are some exceptions but usually I think so yeah

It's mostly things that have services attached to them that will auto-reload
makes sense
smol mini, big monka
they hath arrived
Is that an esp
now just have to somehow un-mirror finish the base and cap
yep
Iโd probably spray matt varnish on it
would that get the same look as this?
Nah I think that would require actual silver spray pant
hmm okay.
machine arrives
OEM Windows key sticker on back untouched, some of the characters are covered by the intact hiding sticker
activate windows with key
"uh oh this key already used"

back to the fake chinese volume license group i go
if only there was a better way to activate windows

What if... Linux?
Hem?
Lmao
anyone here tried new vs 2026?
I'm on Linux so I wouldn't use Visual studio anyway
;-;
I didnโt know VS wasnโt available on Linux. I assume itโs still the only real (free of charge) choice for Unity still
what is vs new
oh

new visual studio 2026
what's the improvements they can make anyways
it's probably forever gonna be slow
Yeah, works fine
Better agent support would be appreciated, but yeah
don't all jetbrains ides have a community edition now, so rider? or does it not work with unity or something
Ah when i used VS for unity that was not free
also (free for personal) not professional I'm guessin
ive just back back to discord after 3 years what the fuck is a pin (can someone show me it pls)
oh you're right but I'm sure I qualified for something that I wouldn't have from other companies -- MS give out free stuff so often lol
true
top right if you on desktop at least
phone
tap "programming"
tap channel name, there's a pins tab
every day the bugs get worse
there seems to be no end to it
i made a small code change it ended up completely bricking unity
this one is admittedly my fault instead of unity's but i dont really know how to fix it
what change? completely bricking it seems impressive
i had a hacky Task.Run executing an async call from a synchronous context
but the stuff it was calling got sad that it wasn't on the main thread so i thought i'd try removing a layer of encapsulation
whatever i did seems to have caused thread deadlock

Unity not good with that IIRC
so many of the calling functions are synchronous because the signature is predefined
but any networked RPC calls that want to return values must be called asynchronously
Can you use coroutines to query these
but then unity functions can only be called from the main thread so you cant call them from within any of the tasking threads used by async

isn't that the sort of pseudo async you can use to unlock your thread
basically cause it's on a game loop you can't hang on stuff between frames
so coroutines like return to look at things across frames
I don't know if it's a fit for your specific issue btw
ye, it's basically Unity's brand of async I think
I remember using a plugin like "better coroutines" that wrapped the task runner within the Unity stuff, which IIRC is older than the task runner stuff that now exists
I have to imagine they've improved things since I last touched it..
Coroutines are also useful for handling long asynchronous operations, such as waiting for HTTP transfers, asset loads, or file I/O to complete.
thank you Unity docs
not sure if RPC also fits in there but would work probably
Coroutines are cooperative async routines.
Unlike most async which gets preempted, coroutines get to choose when they await, and they can return a value when doing so.
This lets you stream async results over time, rather than having to wait for everything to be ready at once
One thing I do remember - their performance was awful out the box
that's more an issue if you used tons of them
and it was like a state machine that checked up on the process every time it was called (like in OnUpdate()) so it didn't try to return back to a function that had ended 300 frames ago

barely functions because
it written in
object oriented language
it
objects instead
ye gamedevs are crazy
I don't know how they do it
colliders didnt collide
Just code it till it works (tm)

it was my mistake for assuming you selected Physics2D for 2D physics
true just duct tape it until its good enough
I don't have enough duct tape
smh how could you assume that
dear discord if it's past due then maybe apply any of the credit now instead of in a month
why they even divided colliders into 2d and 3d
just make 1 collider and separate it internally

different physics engines
ye
2D colliders are just different than 3D colliders
makes sense to separate
not colliders I think?
coordinate system 3d
the rendering is
yeah they just have 0 z
z is important for 2d rendering
that's the cheap way to do the z layer yeah
i felt like 2d collider is 3d collider but z is ignored
yes
then why separate
I don't remember why they have the 2d versions - I thought it was practically syntactic sugar?
people said its different physics engine
however you can slam both 2d and 3d colliders into both 2d or 3d i think
so it looks like they both work on both engines
but if you put 3d collider in 2d world they never collide 3d-wise because z is scaled to 0 and they never really intersect
i guess the game itself doesnt know if its 2d or 3d
its all 3d
so you have to explicitly tell it that these colliders are 2d
is this possible explanation?
you have to tell it anyway, the shapes are just different
they should have called 3d collider "collider3d" and not just "collider"
now that I think is because Unity originally was meant to be specifically 3d and people "hacked" it using sprites and infinite Z space for colliders
I think it carries a lot of legacy jank - I hope godot or something can keep it down
i do use luks

i was gonna la di da turn it on but then turns out it has a serious performance impact because cpu can't keep up with them modern pcie5 nvme speeds
also turns out there's a way to make the disk do it for itself, and my disk support it too
and i can even enable that with samsung magician!
wrr
oh that's from Monsters vs Aliens 2
honestly nobody is breaking into my house to steal my data but if i ever have to take the pc for a repair my data will by lying around like that smh
sorry i meant Monsters vs Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space
extract the drive before giving it to repair
what's up with this franchise by the way
Let me try that on my MacBook
Mine does
Itโs the main diff between the pro and air.. ironically the fan is only on the pro

arm chip go brr
(does not)
it's got the strangest ensemble cast of:
- 100ft tall lady;
- blue goop with one eye;
- like, a fish guy;
- a cockroach guy scientist thing;
- some sort of military guy;
probably more
its also on the internet archive???
or, 21 minutes of it is
it sounds like tung tung sahur universe thing
not sure how long the full film is
21?
yes
im watching it on the internet archive right now
my cousins were watching this over 1.5 decades ago
1.5 decades
why do i keep trying to make things that i have no idea how to make
because
u stupid

im 12 minutes into the film
man im over engineering my backend api
i need to set like a timer or something for how long i should allow myself to code something

@covert bane you can have your c back it was fun having it
wrr
I see
If I want to change a value that isnt stored on a drive during runtime, only on startup and exit, wtf do I do ๐ญ
change it there where its stored then
wow that was a waste of bandwidth
not mine but
internet archive's
ye

me say it was bad
user@nixos ~/D/journal> ls
2025-12-24 2026-01-15
great journal
i was supposed to write in it every day
all that suppose and post-reflection on the journal itself is bad overhead
focus on more journal
rrr
i realized the error of my ways
my vm
no longer weird
maybe a little bit
i gave up on every idea except my original idea of using order maintenance for efficient reevaluation cutoffs
order maintenance is a complicated problem but a solved one
so
this algo should be a matter of time for me to implement
when im rich from
making best and most useful vm in the world
youtube shorts are popular, 1.78 million views
oh my
are you gonna be reading that?
i havent read kitakawa but i guess i understand why
it's a little silly
i'm at like 65% but i just happened to be busy the next day and then it snowballed from there into 2024
if i finish it i might have never started watching
ive already read it
the front cover art is good, but im not a huge fan of the series

Goodmorning
I have slept 22 out of the last 32 hours
i should do something productive

Ideas for my Home Server:
File Server (Not Done Yet unless you consider sftp, but that's built into ssh.)
Tailscale Exit Node (Done)
PiHole (Done)
Discord Bot (The First of the many things done)
TF2 Server (Done, but only running whenever i feel like it.)
Good, now deploy everything using kubernetes and have everything autoscale
what do we think about this type of variable declaring?
set var to 25
set var1 = 'hi'
i want to have a server, but i know i wont use it that much
just want it cuz its cool, not cuz i need it
a programmer pet rock
a minecraft server?
we need a programmer pet turtle
how bad is bios being 3 years old
if you are fine with being tired often then its fine
erm
programmer pet rock turtle, gotta have weight if you wanna throw it at marketing
ye that kinda what a homelab is
don't really need it, it's just to play around with stuff
if you actually require it then it ceases to be a lab
the urge to buy 8 3090s and make a rendering powerhouse
or ai i guess, but thats not really in my wheelhouse
i think you'd only need 5K for that actually
there is a new ai hat for the pi. slap a battery on it -> llm server2go
maybe 6K total if you go xeon
im not really upto date on how the numbering of xeons or threadrippers work
i have no dea which ones are good or bad

for Epycs (which I think you'd want from AMD if you want tons of lanes for cheap) the last letter is the generation
Rome is relatively cheap now, anything newer still expensive
for performance you mostly just have to care about cores I think, that's kinda what they're built to scale
idk about Intel
wrrrr
is intel nowadays even a acceptable option?
yeah, not horrible
Epyc 9684X looks insane
yeah so does the price
L3 Cache
1152 MB
booting linux from L3 Cache sounds fun.
Genoa ๐ธ
won't even give you more lanes I think
ye, even a little 8 core Rome gives you 128 lanes 64 lanes (need 2 sockets for 128)
the cpus i can find are these
epyc 7401P, 108 euro
epyc 7402P, 361 euro
epyc 7302P, 361 euro
epyc 7313, 349 euro
epyc 3751P, 120 euro
epyc 7252 (unlocked????), 65 euro
most of the cost will probably come from the motherboard
some Epycs are locked to specific vendors, usually Dell

Dell-locked CPUs are super cheap, but they only work in Dell servers, so not great
there a lot of used dell servers though
oh and all of these are on a core 2 duo machine.
though truth be told, i need to consider maybe throwing in a mechanical HDD for storage for that thing
there are, if you're willing to deal with that then it's probably a good deal
i have... a few of them waiting for a use
then there are also some full systems
ASUS RS500A-E12-RS12U with epyc 9334 for 1.6K (no ram or storage)
Dell PowerEdge R7525 DualEPYC RTX8000 256Gb Ram with 2 epyx 7F52 for 6K
let's see my tiny box of computer parts...
hm, 2x Toshiba 500 GB Laptop Drives... this could work.
i'd have to run a SMART test on these before i'd throw it in as additional storage to the home server, but hey, free storage is free (provided they still work)
Dell servers don't have lanes, so it is understandable
6K for 32 cores
Dell always kinda expensive, SP3 isn't ancient yet, but that still seems high, mabe RAM prices
PCIe x16 slots you mean

its dell
yeah, it is just mostly cpu preformance
not really for connecting devices
oh yeah, they're definitely not built for 8 GPUs, they're usually 1U or 2U servers after all
At least if my memory serves correctly
ye, just general purpose compute + some 2.5" storage usually, at least with older servers
I think even their threadripper workstations also don't have many x16 slots for the same reason
older stuff of course
2ร 2400 W, that thing would need its own new breakers in my house
the 1.6K one is probably the best deal, but then id have to get some ddr5 ram.
and i know damnw ell that anything more than 64gb is gonna cost more than that server itself
I'm sure the lanes are available somewhere, but you're gonna have to go searching, adapt those to proper slots and run that out of the chassis to wherever you want to put the GPUs
easier to just completely DIY it IMO
4U chassis is cheap
they aren't active at the same time, but yeah
one less breaker to add
most of the threadrippers i can find are older ones with 16 cores, so they perform worse than my current cpu
Every time I think of threadrippers for gpus, I'm just reminded that PCI switch chips are only 1k new (needs like 500 in cables) for gen 5. Just depends on if you really need that bandwidth to CPU or just need them to be accessible by the CPU and able to communicate among themselves.
Intrusive thought that won't go away
full pcs with
Threadripper 3960X, 32gb ram, 2070 super, 1.1K
Threadripper 3960X, 64gb ram, 2080ti, 1.3K

where do you even get those, they're such a niche thing, especially outside of PCIe switched fabrics
-# it's aliexpress isn't it
Surprisingly not aliexpress

my pc is making a lot of noise, and its at 78C
its not even doing anything

random guy
someone is doing something if it's at 78C
this is gen 4, classic me not reading
there is a gen 5 on the site but it is a lot more painful
Is this for cost or just slowdown
those readings look weird. half the cores are way too hot
73, 48, 73, 48
nah those readings must be wrong
its changing 20C up and down in seconds
I legit just think it depends on the workflow as long as devices don't have to talk to the CPU to coordinate among themselves. But that could be a falsehood
this jsut cant be right, its using the wrong sensors or somwething
doesn't match with activity either. do you have another tool? maybe just the console top command? it might
and it's it a repeating pattern. maybe the real sensor doesn't exist
some cores on that CCD are under load
I think it's just heating up
at the very least its using the same sensor for all the cores on that ccd then
yes, it makes things unnecessarily complicated
i guess i'd just ignore the temp beside the cores. coz they're not per core.
i wonder what i fucked up to get it to be like this
ye it is
55% of one core is still a chunk of compute
i think i have another cava bug
you may say unnecessary complicated, but I see a small price to pay to not buy into overpriced threadrippers + motherboards unless I really need cores.
If the only reason is complicated, then it is fair game for those who can put in the effort
you can get an epyc system with 128 lanes for less than just the switch
(Threadripper probably is expensive ye)
(also not sure about RAM prices now (but have to buy separately anyway))
128gb ddr5
it seems like i haver a lot of cava bugs
ill need to rewrite this whole script
that's what you get for stealing code form the internet
If the argument was only about lanes, then just grab a epyc server. Looking outside of raw lane count, I personally see a usecase in expanding an existing system instead of buying a new one.
Im on the fence, not sure if (when I go to build the system) I should whitebox or something like a dell XE9680. planning on going with rtx pro 6000s
I will admit it is on thin ice
hm. if this keeps going RAM will be more expensive than Gold by weight.
if you really need to expand an existing system instead of replacing it or just adding a new one then yeah, you're kinda forced into using a switch
but common practice is to just replace a machine after it's too weak instead of upgrading
based and eepy
A 256gb stick of ddr5 is halfway there
not going to happen as gold is a component in ram
Incorrect, gold is a partial part of ram not all of it. It'd be called gold then
27.5 grams of gold recovered from ram
Did I not say component
why would that matter
RAM is completely different than gold, even if gold is a material used as part of it
You did, but I'm calling you stupid regardless because that is just incorrect
in the end, you could always hotglue a diamond on it to bridge the gap
i think what iggly meant is that it could become more expensive as the price of the chips will outweigh the value of the gold
looks like a pill, why gold and not copper btw? or am i tripping and its not gold what is in the thing that enter in the motherboard
gold is more conductive so it makes sense to use as traces get smaller
contacts are often gold plated for corrosion resistance
that as well
doest matter even if its fully made of gold, it could still become a lot more valuable than gold due to the manufacturing
the value is not just the base materials
Gold is ductile. it is used to connect the bga contacts to the silicon as well as plating the contacts. There is much more gold in the chips compared to the contacts. The contacts are gold plated copper
so?
sits back and watches the fire burn that he ignited
ram has a price floor due to the price of gold. beyond production constraints, the price of gold has a direct impact on ram prices
Can I get some marshmallows?
thats like saying the price of goods is dependant on the value of money
no, but we have bread on a stick.
Sure, that works

price floor, sure (even though that will practically never matter)
but price ceiling?
god i wish we could hit the price floor
No, gold is a base resource. Its more that the price of gold tracks the rate of inflation/scarcity/demand
the resource
Ah, ram prices
oh i see what you mean
gold is used for many applications
also for ram to reach the price of gold, an average single dimm would have to cost $2220
i think the amount of gold used in 2GB dimms is roughyl the same as in 256GB dimms, so it shouldnt have an influence at all

hey, mister. so you're saying ram prices raised because gold demand raised right?
no bc ai data centers i think
no but its a factor
no. ram prices raised because more people wanted ram.
I was asking his opinion
and there was only a fixed amount of ram
same demand on the consumer side, more demand on the datacenter side. Gold price/inflation isnt helping
I guess we can check gold prices for last months to see if that has anything to do with it, I guess?
it's supply / demand, as always. There was once a time where salt was as valuable as Gold.
Shhh!
stop stunting conversation.
its per chip about the same. until you get into larger chips (used in 64+ gb modules) but usually larger modules have more chips
I just want to see where that person comes from
you can DM if you wanna talk to one person
i don't think 256Gb of ram sticks costs 1461 euro because of the 0.1 grams of gold used
it's not your channel
256 is an outlier
all good, all good.
does anyone who has a neuro lava lamp know what vedal used to heat the lava lamp without the lights overheating? im running into an issue with that making mine
I didn't mean to "not say what you have to say" if it came across that way
an outlier
ok fine, i dont think 128GB ram stick costs 667 euro because of the 0.1 grams of gold used
the "shh" certainly did
*when averaged over decades
in smaller modules there is way less than 0.1 gram but the major costs in ram are the silicon inside the bga, gold and copper
Trust me on this, he has been butting heads against a lot of us due to some "viewpoints" on cost to prefomance
I'm sorry. I just wanted to hear what they have to say and not hear the "right" answer
I don't really care that much, but it's interesting what people think
in traditional lavalamps the lightbulb is the heatsource for the lava, heat is intentional. with specific wattage ofc.
Here's the start of the thread for you @muted jasper
0.1 grams of gold is like 12 euro rn, ands sure the prices have gone up. but i dont think that 12 euro contributes too much to the ram pricing
He has the LEDs in the base and then heats the glass with an induction coil
The LEDs are air gapped from the coil
How does yours look under the bottle
its 12 euro of gold in the 256gb sticks, 12 euro of gold int he 128gb sticks, 12 euro of gold int he 64gb sticks
its the same
Damn 12 euros of gold
something something higher component density something something lower yields something demand. higher prices.
More than I thought for sure
The base costs of the components + supply/demand does impact price significantly. If component cost doubles, they arent going to take a lower profit margin. the price will go up proportionally
its a pretty high estimate, its probably a lot lower
The Gold argument for RAM price is stupid. Gold started rising in price in late 23. Ram spiked in Oct 25.
You know what else happened in Oxt 25? Sam altman bought 40% of the world's RAM supply
does the base get hot? or is it just the coil in the glass
sure, but it has no price cap
when there's an auction bidding for the last buyable ram stick, while there's tons of gold all around the place, there won't be an increased demand for gold, just an increased demand for that one ram stick
a ram stick is weighed at 1.1 oz without heatsink
Initially just the coil, but it then transfers back into the base
man everything i say was said by someone else before... watching twitch makes you ๐ฅ
It works the same way as an induction stove basically
wrong mesurement
average weight is 15 grams wtf is 1.1
oz nvm
interesting... wonder if they sell induction heaters that screw into lightbulb sockets
i know how much is in ram chips its about 3-5g per kg of chips
They're not too hard to make, it's just some coils to make a magnetic field
Now doing it safely on the other hand
That might be a bit harder
I have 2kg of ram chips sitting in hcl right now
making your own lava lamp == dangerous. they can explode if overheated.
or cooled too quickly.
on your globe does the coil stick out of the glass? or does it not matter for induction to work
i have a lava lamp, i just want to make it neuro compatible
No it's inside. Induction has a bit of range so for safety it's inside
careful which components you remove
if it was dependent on the price of gold, then ddr5 would be the same price as ddr2, 128gb would be the same price as 128mb
it just don't work like that
jsut like how a 10 year old cpu is made formt he same materials as a brand new one, the new one is worth more
Question, does a NAND package have gold in it?
Whatโs that
small amounts iirc
The black chips?
okay. mine has that too. not just gotta find an induction heater that fits and is the right power
i think there was a weird lithography step that involved gold, not sure though.
yes
NAND is what's driving the price of ram. From October to Novemebr, the unit price of NAND went from $6 to $27
price of everything is 100% due to demand. if there is no demand for something you won't sell it at any price.
actually more than the plating and its 24k
and demand varies due to availability. and low availability can have multiple causes
Gold has been rising, but its been rising since 2023. The ram price is much more recent and is just due to Sam Altman
Its not the lithography, gold bond wires connect the silicon to the bga pads
I mean, maybe gold prices have to do something with raise of prices but it's clearly not the core of it, so... what's the argument about anyway
not going to happen as gold is a component in ram was replied on this
RAM prices were falling since COVID until October 25 because there was an oversupply
ah right, yes.
Gold has been rising since late 2023 after the US and EU froze Russia's bank accounts
And then rising further as the US becomes more instable
Now RAM spiked because there's undersupply after some fucker bought 40% of the world's supply above market rates
"For example, according to the World Gold Council, a typical cell phone may contain 50 mg of gold, worth about three dollars. But since nearly one billion cell phones are produced each year, a gold value of US$2.82 (equivalent to $3 in 2024) in each phone adds to US$2.82 billion in gold from just this application (equivalent to $3,030,040,937 in 2024)."
not a whole lot of gold
There's another viewpoint - what if raise of gold prices caused by raise of RAM demand, how about that?
Timeline makes no sense for that
You could make that argument for silver but not gold
IDK I was just saying that ram prices (average not extreme examples) wolnt exceed the price of gold as higher prices of ram lead to increase in supply pressure which results in more demand for raw resources meaning more demand for gold
We know who is buying the Gold though, and it's not electronics manufacturers
thats possible and probably lready happened in really smalle percentages of gold price increase, but it wont be a visible climb due to the existing inflation already happening
It's banks
They're buying gold because they can no longer trust the US
Gold has now exceeded the US treasury as the greatest store of wealth for banks for the first time since the end of ww2
only 10% of gold is used for "industrial" uses. most is jewelery or investment.
does the coil say 12v 1.9a? or is it not that
12V 1.9A yee
okay. this might be possible to actually make. just gotta actually find a coil that looks the same, or ask vedal what it is
You should be able to buy generic induction coils
plot the prices of both on the same graph. it should become obvious how related they are
do they not have to be angled a certain way? also do i have to use a special led and base that isnt metal? or is that a non-issue
Angle isn't too important, it just needs to be close enough to heat up
LED just need to be heat resistant and be a 3 wire LED to ontrol the colour
Base can be whatever, again just heat resistant. Not being metal is probably a good idea though so you don't burn yourself accidentally touching it while it's on
it might be safer to simply buy an existing rgb lava lamp and hack the remote control.
Your idea building your own is frightening.
you are using lots of very loose words for things that can explode and shower you with glass and boiling liquids if you do them wrong.
i would but i dont see any that are the right shape..
maybe this isnt a great idea...
i already have the lamp tho :c
That's true, I tend to understate risks with personal projects
But that risk comes from thermal shock. If it's not changing temperature too quickly the risk isn't too high
If you have a lava lamp already, and it's a white one, my suggestion would be just or put the LEDs on the outside
And leave everything else as is
have you tried a glitter lamp? same general idea as a lava lamp but instead of molten wax inside it, it's got reflective or translucent plastic pieces floating around. the very gently heating makes them move and cast beams in random directions.
If it's already coloured it won't be compatible as they usually use filment bulbs rather than induction
If proper care is taken, it becomes unlikely that nature selects your fate.
okay, id just like the globe to be the neuro colour and look as similar as possible. it uses a filament bulb but the wax and liquid are white/clear because i replaced them.

i cant stay hidden anymore??

thank you Unity docs
