for understanding how a neural network (and ML in general) works you can start with MNIST / handwritten digit recognition, it's kind of the "hello world" of ML
probably want to learn some Python and Numpy first if you haven't yet, basically the whole ML ecosystem is based on those

for automating tasks with AI (specifically with LLMs) you don't technically need to know how they work internally, you usually don't train a model specifically for that, it's more about prompting and integration

other than that, the "how does it work" stuff is probably best started with a bunch of videos on youtube that explain both the math and the evolution of the field in the last 15-ish years (if for no other reason, to be able to place names on the timeline and be immune to the current hype slop)

up to a point, you could also try to use various such methods, reimplement smaller existing libs / parts of them after using them a bit to better understand how they work, basically getting up to date. at one point tho, you might run into a hardware bottleneck

for any automation, you'll probably want the current-ish agent stuff? (they will delete everything at some point XD) but might also need to learn some devops on the way

most AI solutions we have right now are either

• very specialized, only good at one thing, needed a lot of training to get there, but at least do a better job than humans
• generic enough, but get very hallucinate-y and imprecise and unreliable when any real depth is involved, and consume the resources of a small town to do that, and don't really outdo humans

there's also the whole "VC cash grab failing to profit, ran out of data, ran out of RAM" issue. LLMs aren't looking good in terms of improving" thing going on
so at the end of the day the only way forward remains "copying humans more", and most AI seems very far from meaningfully developing / training itself
