power efficiency i imagine
the steam machine can stream to the steam frame
since the headset is wireless, it has a baterry
i imagine that using the snapdragon 8 would lower battery life
snapdragon over what
streaming
???
ehat
you can either run the games locally on the frame with the snapdragon OR stream from another machine
what's so confusing about that
if you're doing stremaing the only thing using battery on the headset woudl be input and video decode
yeah???
tracking?
i see trackign as part of input
like obviously streaming from another machine would eat less power on the headset
its inside out tracking though
100% local to the headset
that requires… processing power
over x86 like the steam deck
what are you talking about
that doesnt make a difference
since it’s a standalone device
like the steam deck
when you're streaming or being local, both of those have the strackign in the headset
so there is no power usage difference in that aspect
yeah
thats not my point
i REALLY don’t understand what the fuck you’re talking about
I don't understand what's your confusion
it’s in the same product category as meta quest
there isn’t a wireless streaming only headset
you say here power efficiency, asif using the snapdragon 8 would mean it uses less power, when it would use more power
suggest a more efficient soc then
as opposed to... what, x86 chipset on the headset?
ye thank you
snapdragon arm processors are already incredibly power efficient
now you get why i’m confused
thats not what im trying to say. im asking why even use an soc if the streaming machine is right there with a lot more performance budget?
you don't HAVE to use a streaming machine if you don't have one
isnt it provided with the headset?
It is a s5andalone unit
they’re separate products sam
very separate
steam machine and steam frame are sold separately as different products
just happen at the same time
you do not need one another
Headset is a Standalone ARM SteamOS machine
And thr Steam Machine is an x86 desktop box
you can use the steam frame standalone without any PC or steam machine box
and vice versa
how much is the machine thing?
not announced officially yet i think
no pricing yet
do you need the steam machine to connect an actual pc to it?
no
you might want to rewatch the announcement trailer
I think it'll clear up many of the confusions
sam you’re not 10 years old how do you not know ehat a steam machine is
i know what a steam machine is
that’s it
the steam frame comes with a wireless dongle that your steam machine or PC can stream from to the device - connecting from such device is optional
i thought it was part of the headset hardware
not my fault i said what it was in order
they are separate products
well yes, that's why i said it in past tense
we good now then?
what’s confusing is you can stream from the steam machine
because it is a pc with steam
stream steam from the steam streaming machine
why didn’t they name it steam engine
the steam machine is basically for those that don't wanna deal with setting up a whole PC
for 10x more confusion and 10x cool points
the whole premise now and back then was always about "here's a box that just works"
i guess
if you already have a PC then the steam machine is not for you
however you may still find the steam frame enticing
the controllers are fine cuz its just the standard layout, but i feel like the frame and machine are a bit last-gen?
what are the specs i don’t know
the steam machine concept is not new - just now they have a better hardware team and a good OS
he alr said he knows what that is
like, im not sure if the steam frame is even considered an upgrade form the rift cv1 i have now, ignoring foveated streaming and whatever
bro are you fr
zen 4 cpu, with igpu
anything from 2025 is an upgrade over the rift cv1 💔
nuh-uhg
As for steam frame, the concept is also not new just now we have a decent competitor against meta's solution with better controller and better wireless streaming experience, and steamos
ye
and that's a good thing
i feel like the software side is the major pluspoint
I also like how it has eyetracking and a expansion for what it seems face tracking.
the hardware is eh
just because it's not entirely new concept-wise doesn't mean it's necessarily archaic or unnecessary as what you're implying up there
wait face tracking??
the eyetracking is nice i guess, thats the only thing it has over the cv1
I dont think it has it by default, but it has a expansion slot that could fit it, as for eyes, it has eye tracking
Semi-custom AMD Zen 4 6C/12T, up to 4.8GHz, 30W TDP
Semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 28CUs, 2.45GHz sustained clock, 110W TDP, 8GB GDDR6
16GB DDR5 SODIMM (upgradeable)
512GB or 2TB;
ye not too great
why wouldn’t they be doing that
i love that they are
bitrate
😄
extra bitrate for the stuff in focus is nice
the magnetic controllers are nice too.. shame index controllers dont have that.
index controllers are ancient by now lol
im ancient 😭
cpu is good
idk about gpu, looks fine but i dont have much context
you do not need >6c for gaming
everyone who says otherwise is scamming you
and it’s a gaming box
is it really not visible
sounds very cool

4 CUs less than the 7600 (XT), could be worse i guess
Depends on the price
they made GameCube 2
beetles
They are going to announce that with the prices
or will be released with it
Maybe it is HL3 and did not want to break the internet
They're giving these things away apparently
wtf?
I just got it for -$400
oh
Ai slop phone
Goes well with my ai slop life

Still no gemini nano 🥀
Where 3.0
are we all just a slop of some higher dimentional ai
I had a pixel 8 pro so I'm curious to see how much more AI slop it is than this thing already is
Maybe my home hub will finally answer to Gemini
I like how google advertises it as the gemini phone
When gemini is available everywhere
Well but this one he is not only available but he's harvesting every piece of data imaginable to customize your ads
Even more than usual
for games like vrc you will need a dgpu if you want anything above 30fps in a public lobby
unless you have a lot of lod and stuff
it performs like shit on the best hardware
yep
jsut because its badly optemized doesn't mean i cant be like "hey i mainly use vr for playing vrc, so this is not worth it for me"
i would imagine you’d have something like the meta quest edition on the headset itself
eh
Vrc on the quest is ass and still runs bad 🥀
since its steam-os, maybe a specific settings profile or soemthing?
i doubt they wwould release a 2nd version on steam specifically for the frame
it’s arm
ye but its coming with some translation layer thing
But yeah
that would suck even more
I mean that's expected
Fex translation layer for traditional x86 games.
i really hope valve is giving an option to publish native arm builds
of games
That would)d be beeg
performance is the one important thing on vr
i guess you're right, cv1 is 1080x1200 per eye while the frame is 2160x2160, 144hz instead of 90hz. altho the frame is lcd and the cv1 is oled
idk how good the blacks are in the frame, but if its noticeably gray i don't consider it an improvement
I haven't really noticed anything on my quest That runs so badly in detached mode that it is unplayable but that's because VR game selection
yep
half life alyx is incredably optemized too
its jsut games liek vrchat
i fuckign hate vrchat
but its pretty much the only game i play in vr
im rooting for its downfall so it gets replaced by a different platform that does the same things but better
I barely use vr because of the fuckass first gen vive that I have
i use vr maybe once every 2 moinths
cv1 is still holding up fine
the frame has "Monochrome passthrough via outward facing cameras" apparently, kinda like the apple thingy
thats cool i think
Hewwo
hrrr
@fast pagoda i am actually gonna need your opinion on this
“kinda like the apple thingy” except quest 2 had the exact same monochrome passthrough in 2021
didn’t the index have that too
connie

also they do allow that
nice
connie /ˈkɒni/ noun, informal•Australian English, plural noun: connies, a conductor on a bus or tram.
its a caterpillar
I think i did actually cook with this one tho
Almost a year old lmao
I believe funyun remembers that one actually
He def will remember this one
fair enough
it real caterpillar

oh no
Wait since when can we not trust konii?
i thought i misread it
Did something happen?

ye me dropship 10 tonne of caterpillar on sam
since the day televisions were invented

do caterpillars eat flesh when given the chance?
only if you are 🍃
I think i will disagree with the person comming from a country that doesn't even know how to lay roads properly
some adult moths, which are the next life stage after a caterpillar, can pierce human skin to suck blood or tears for supplemental nutrients, a behavior known as vampire moths.

vampire moths
The lion does not concern himself with bugs
damn
you know we actually have to drive over those roads right? they hurt us more than they hurt you
all roads are roads

if all roads lead to rome, and my house is connected to a road, do all roads also lead to my house?
Yeah.. that's probably why your country never learns, because of the brain trauma
@sick owl uuh so openai silently dropped gpt-5.1

Oh its just 4oified 5
I actually liked that 5 was less parasocial ngl
no roads lead to rome
rome isnt a thing anymore

its not?
not for long
Ahh now i see why we don't trust konii anymore!
you will know soon
konii dont bomb italy please
no benchmarks
What programming languages does this community predominantly use?
That's cause its also tuned to use less tokens when thinking a bunch of the time
Wonder how that reflects on benchmark scores eh
c++, python occasionally
All of them
Added sycophancy and shorter reasoning traces
But me mainly Kotlin
I for real forgor how to properly use C pointers after using rust for a while lmao
ugh, all these ppl complaining about 4o
Great, I am a C, C#, and ASM programmer transitioning to Rust
or rather advocating for it over 5
i get the difference between pointers and references on a cognitive level, but when programming i pretty much always default to pointers
Imagine rust being such goated, that it's main selling point isn't even OOP, and it still does OOP better than GoLang which does sell itself as OOP
Same people that called GPT OSS shit because it wouldn't let them pretend to be in a relationship btw
i like the suffering of c++
I have to stop already? This is like literally the first time i even do it lmao
1 time is more than enough
depending on how strictly you define OOP, Rust rarely fits the definition
but can you debug virtual microcontrollers in a SPICE model with Rust?

subliminal propaganda
how
You didn't know about that?
not really subliminal, its mainly your existance that made me mention it
i knew and its cringe
personally me think the best thing about rust is its tooling
Go has never sold itself as an oop language
everything else is done better by other languages
quite the opposite
Rust is multi-paradigum—it blends functional, procedural, and object-oriented techniques together, but doesn't exactly fit OOP definitions
It's the self declared "c for the 21st century"
Same crowd, they make the entire space a pain in the ass to navigate and drag down cloud providers with their antics as we're seeing now with 5.1
Because so much word of mouth reputation is staked on how hard a model can roleplay and validate users rather than its actual intelligence
C is still a great language to write in. It just requires more boilerplate

All 4 of which arguably do a better job at it
the worst thing about c is writing it
the best thing about c is how old it is
at least it isnt Cpp, though
if i want objects, ill write them myself
google deepmind watching this release: yh we can delay the 3.0 release another month, safe
I love templates!!!!
you have malloc
I love spending a minute watching a single file compile!!!!
I really disagree on that.. now of course it isn't java where your ONLY option is OOP... but rust is also pretty good at it

you get this without templates in rust
i dont like using malloc
now if you include rust teplates
calloc

true
as I mentioned, it is all about how you define OOP
inheritence is overrated ngl
Rust can do that... but why would you even wanna.. lmao
rust doesnt support inheritence
It does
you can simulate inheritence but it doesnt exist

I should've written my thesis in zig but fuck dealing with the cuda driver api
if you define it as having encapsulation, polymorphism, and composition, then yes; if you define it as classes and inheritance, then no.
imagine writinfg cuda, couldnt be me
rust doesnt have inheritence because its not a language feature

Don't supertraits kind of count
no
the closest thing is trait objects of supertraits
which is "inheritence" but really you arent inheriting anything because you still have to write every method
but have you considered that c++ comes with extra brain damage and pain for free?
So does rust
eh
Try writing generic async rust
it in fact does
you'll see
Rust has classes tho? It just is not called a class, but its the exact same concept
a class is a higher level concept
in c++ they basicly do the same thing
I was more aiming for impl but okay
a struct represents a data layout
oh
struct methods are not the same thing as class methods

so then why do they put functions methods in structs?
Well, it sure feels the same way
Convenience
because its a useful abstraction
Struct and classes behave pretty much identically who cares what they're called
THIS
smh
classes are always reference types
I literally said that from the beginning of my classes claim
have you considered, no
A class typically supports inheritance and reference semantics (objects live on the heap and are accessed by reference), while a struct is a value type that uses composition instead of inheritance and is usually stored directly on the stack.
a class is like a struct but with somoe extra shit i guess
like i said, a class is a higher level concept

It always has been
i dont reall think in concpets
oop has its place
i know
thats why you're able to do whatever that jit thing was and i didnt understand shit
no that's because i have more experience writing virtual machines and abusing c semantics
thats part of it
But hey
.. what do i know.. i'm just a haskell, rust, c/c++, asm, go, and js programmer.. right?
idk
Honestly thinking of adding zig to that list as well
im not gonna argue semantics cuz the one thing i know is that i dont know
inheritance is great for enterpirse environments that havent evolved into more advanced concepts yet
it almost always demonstrate the opposite of what they try to convey by saying it

damn
So basically, what you're saying, is.. inheritance is great but only if you are forced to use it?
yes
inheritence is great for things that need to work now and dont need to be robust
which is partly why its used in enterprise settings
though a lot of the reason is legacy ye
agreed. it is better to master concepts and all aspects of the language before swapping to another one without reason. Otherwise, you end up being mediocre at a ton of languages. Though, it might be better for multi-language environments if you are unfortunate enough to be in one
I do
I'm listening to the one you mentioned RN
I cooked up some real good things back then
I'm a cloud native developer, so I had to use a few languages. One thing I will never work on, though, is weak-typed interpreted languages
Absolutely partying with the ridiculous RGB of the laptop cooling thing I got yesterday while I wait for this phone to activate and re-pull everything
besdes maybe bash
Now i wanna make a statically typed bash
Why you put this idea in my head
every reasonable language have tools to accomplish the same things, which is why i hold the belief that the largest barrier to changing languages is simply the paradigm, when you are unfamiliar with it
what the fuck is a statically typed bash
i.e. changing from a c-style language to a functional style language
it doesnt exist because bash only has one type
string

C# is introducing script files
yes
That's why i have to make it
w
static typing in scripting languages is a waste of time
u
the entire point of scripting languages is prototyping
w u
It is like French, I learned how to write in other languages so I can refuse to use them as opposed to simply being unable to
It saves me a lot of headaches in js and lua tho
what is ahppening here rn?
im so confused
but I agree. it is all the same concept just how do they represent it

if you are writing a program that requires static types to work your head around then it is too complex to be called a script

do people actually program stuff in bash?
yes
15mb js bundle
thats crazy
yee because scripting languages used when dynamic code loading is required not just for scripting
no, i just use it for scheduling and running things, not doing work
There are entire web servers and image processors written in bash...
i guess, but i always thought of bash as more of a human input
idk
that’s so wrong
read steam.sh
but are there any good ones is the question

oh i see
He only uses bash built-ins tho..
bash is used as the language in popular terminals, not inherently the terminal
Sorry i acoustic
true
bash is a scripting language and a shell
not a terminal
Oh i actually have to agree with them
shell != terminal?
a terminal is a piece of hardware
these terms are all so confusing
its both thats why its good
after do stuff can tell computer do same stuff
thats a good point
Terminals or terminal emulators are just pieces of hardware or software that takes text input and gives text output, shells are the things that handle commands
pty
hmm
With my music.. nice

new phone maybe

You remember "bright stars"?
And the rhodes instrument that fucked your ears up?
I'm curious if my sister still remembers making "flickering lights" with me

inheritance very useful form of code reuse
can be achieved in haskell too
"Flickering lights" for reference
Really? Never really used it tho
all programmer mediocre because we strive for perfection in a system where it doesnt exist
inheritance just
open fixpoint
ne not me i never settle for mediocrity and thus avoid programming altogether
me just leaf
🍃 <-
konii gatekeeping smh

I think i am starting to get it?

nee this wouldnt work as inheritance
this is just plain old ad hoc polymorphism (fancy function overloading)
that just haskell trait

What are you confused about?
are we still on object vs struct or is this inheritence
Am I quack now
People saying haskell inheritance, and me looking it up, website giving me an example and me thinking "oh yeah makes sense" and then people being like "nah bro, that isn't it"
it just not inheritence
type class
trait wrr
inheritance would be like
data Thingy = Thingy
{ doA :: Int -> String
, doB :: Int -> String
, doAandB :: Int -> Int -> (String, String) }
thing0 self = Thingy
{ doA = const "a"
doB = const "b"
doAandB = \a b -> (doA self a, doB self b) }
thing = thing0 thing
thing'0 self = thing0 self
{ doA = const "not actually a mwahahaha" }
thing' = thing'0 thing'
like function as value
Haskell hours are scary ones
Inheritance is when one type derives from another, reusing or extending the code structure. Polymophism is when different types can be treated uniformly through a shared interface or behavior, even if their implementations differ
dink dink
Yeah no shit, i was that far already
And all of them are why oop are bad
Haskell is just confusing
pure so compile time same as runtime
compiler free to use or ignore that
haskell just ML language
expressive
not c style

What is probably confusing is how languages express these ideas. Haskell people saying “inheritance” are usually talking about typeclass constraints — which look like inheritance but really aren’t. They’re more like polymorphic contracts resolved at compile time. No class trees, no shared memory layouts — just “if this type implements that behavior, we can use it here.”
So when you see something like:
class Eq a where
(==) :: a -> a -> Bool
…it’s not an inheritance hierarchy. It’s a constraint system. Ord can extend Eq, but that’s conceptual inheritance, not data or method inheritance like in OOP. It’s closer to Rust traits than to classes in C++ or C#.
In short: in functional languages like Haskell (and in Rust), “inheritance” isn’t really inheritance — it’s polymorphism through interfaces, not code reuse through hierarchy.

haskell people saying inheritance arent talking about typeclass constraints
they're talking about inheritance

Em-dash is great—it lets me structure my sentences how I want.
haskell people are freak who use haskell

I mean.. belgian fries probably no where at this time.. but mc donalds is supposed to be open 24/7

I had mc donalds yesterday actually
Ah, that is wild

ngl, didnt know there was an app
cheap?
I mean, in the netherlands i only have came across one singular individual mc donalds that wasn't 24/7
I meant 24/7 in general is less common out of US
I was so sadge when the peach milkshake was gone
closest mcdonalds to me is actually still open till 11pm

my only subscriptions are prime cuzits cheap and yt music cuz its kinda cheap and i use it a lot
I be gathering free trials and just cancelling the auto renew
i free trialed the yt music and i was like, for 6 bucks a month this might actually be worth it
I did accidentally slip w/ Walmart+ which was super salty but I've actually gotten more out of it than it cost already so whatever
Because they gave it to me for $1 for several months and I forgot
Verizon gave me a 12 month long, $20 per line per month discount on my phone service literally only because I went over to the page to generate a transfer code (as if I were transferring my number to another carrier)
i think i could get yt music and normal yt premium for 9 bucks a month, which i was debating, but normal yt i can just adblock since i only watch yt on pc
the 6 a month for just the music is mostly for the downloading
in terms of ads i can also block those on my phone if i wanted to
YouTube music and premium aren't together by default?
you can get music seperatly
I have had music since the stone ages because of my yt sub
Oh
I refuse to use my music
my
Youtube
Because they killed Google play music for it
its better than spotify cuz it syncs to what i like on normal yt
And with that they killed the ability to just upload your entire local music library to Google music and stream it through Google music anywhere
So I don't use yt music out of protest
One day I'm sure they'll fold to my demands surely
???
you can just select use local files no?
i have too much music in my spotify library for youtube and i'm too lazy to purge so spotify it is

On one device and you have to have it stored local
But then you can still stream it no?
With old Google music you could manually upload it and store it on Google music itself as if it were part of the music library
Globally
Or have a sync uploader on your PC that auto added any local files that way
rclone time
And on top of that you could also redownload the original file from their servers
Yeah
that sucks
It was so much better
I still don't have the best solution to this, I just use Grayjay and download my music. I only really use my phone for it so I don't have sync issues.
casting is different though
Google doesn't want to be potentially responsible if you stream/store anything you didn't purchase so
bwaa
i'm surprised it took them so long to remove that feature
Nope
Homelab or some cheap server hosting the stuff via Plex (plexamp) accessible via cloudflare or tail scale or whatever
if all else fails chrome-cast your phone i guess, use your phones' bluetoothif its an option

I was on distrowatch earlier and there's at least one distro solely focused on existing to play/store/stream music
all roads lead to rclone
This is some sort of skill issue but I haven't actually gotten around to setting this up myself so idk yet
I love rclone
Except when it gets my Google account screeched at by sundae pickle
i mainly use rclone to work around google drive not offering anything
I know there is a jellyfin plugin for this app, I only use one device so
I'm hard at work with my many .... Servers.... Roaring and ready 2 instantly fail due to misconfiguration
They don't even have OS set up again
Does the samsung media player not support mp3??? I know it does mp4. This is bullshit.
Also wtf is creality cloud doing there? Im not gonna 3d print my music
alma linux seems interesting
Average android share interface
3rd party of course, but they have a few first party stuff now.
just what old centos was
no no
ok its a bit confusing so
theres fedora -> upstream
centos stream -> more stable than fedora slightly lagging behind
The box with the random GPU as a decoration has that rn
I've barely done anything wit- it
Because I just put it on there like yesterday
rhel -> most stable, based on centos stream with redhat patches and long term support
neuroOS

u are right
