OSS is very very quick for what it is due to being an moe mainly (obv) with the inherently built in 4 bit format as well, it runs great. i havent run into the complaints others have had about it, i find it to be very adaptable and very capable for such low active params & total size. It's a real replacement for anything in the low tier of hosted models, really. I use it for things i used to have something like gemini-flash handle. it helps that the only thing i really use these things for is data/text manipulation type stuff i suppose, really simple stuff but previously fairly inconsistent

yeah, it's got some caveats and it's definitely got the classic oai slop tuning on it ootb, but it can genuinely do almost anything i usually use an LLM for if prodded. for example though even with fairly detailed prompting it cannot convincingly mimic something like echo's brainrotted finetune which very large models can pretty easily do if given examples and comprehensive instructions. even if they accidentally let slip that they're being stupid on purpose sometimes. i've not tried extensively, i guess, but usually it's not hard to do, the "LLM cringe reinforcement" on oss just seems fairly resilient by default.

anything to do with text manipulation, basic quick question checks w/ search lookup, simple math etc it has not really failed yet though

• rc if its just immutable trees
