#new player can any one give me some advice on some cuts

I think some of your top end doesn't really line up with your early and midgame. Things like Archetype of Finality doesn't do much on its own and only does a little bit when paired with Fynn the Fangbearer.
I'd recommend taking a look at all the non-elves you're running and thinking through if they're worth more than another elf. Because you're running so many elf buff cards or things like the Priest of Titania, the cost of running non-elves is pretty high.
Personally, I'd definitely recommend swapping some of the clunkier non-elves for the full suite of one drop elves that tap for mana. The whole reason why elves are such a strong archetype is because of their consistency with a turn one mana dork that can eventually bash in for damage late game once you've got some elf lords in play.
I know the one drops aren't as flashy as things like Maha or Bloodletter of Aclazotz, but they will make your deck much more consistent.
I'd be happy to recommend exact swaps if that's something you're interested in, I've been playing elf decks for 15+ years, I'm a huge fan of the archetype.
@primal onyx wow thanks so much I appreciate it that's what I was thinking but not Shure exactly what to do now I have an idea
@primal onyx and yes pleas
This was the second deck I build I started 8 months ago
- Fynn the Fangbearer doesn't do much unless you happen to draw one of the 7 deathtouchers. And most of those creatures don't need Fynn to be good so he ends up being what a lot of people refer to as a "win more" card.
This is what I needed it's so appreciated
Sure thing, I'll provide justifications for my recommendations but absolutely do not feel like it's presecriptive, if there's a card you like playing, play it. We all have pet cards, don't let me accidentally bully you into playing things you don't enjoy.
I have archetype of finally in there as well as another card to give all cards death touch this is my sneaky way of getting poison in there
Your doing an amazing job I get it surprisingly lol for a noob that I am
But if you only have one source of poison and it gets killed, then none of the poison matters.
What are the other ones?
I'll have to look but archetype the snake lady and one more lol God I have to learn all the names
And there is poison tipped archer and two gilissas
Oh you meant you have three creatures that grant deathtouch to the team, but only Fynn can actually give poison counters
So if Fynn dies, then none of the poison counters do anything because you have no way of adding more at that point
Thank you for deciphering
Right got it understood
This is true so he is at the top of the list for a cut
- Abomination of Llanowar is the kind of card that might be a cut, it's kind of personal preference. It's terrible early game, decent in late game. I'd recommend keeping it in for now but know that you likely want to remove it eventually.
Ok cool I'm happy I hade the same ideas makes me feel I'm learning
But still not 100 percent Shure
Cool
- Champion of Lmabholt is likely a cut for this deck. Don't get me wrong, it's a powerful powerful card and a great finisher, but you're an elf deck, you have a metric shit ton of good finisher options available to you, playing a non-elf one doesn't make much sense.
Got it so maybe too many finishers ok
- All the elves that tap for multiple mana based on number of elves or creatures you have are fantastic. Definitely keep these one.
Definitely too many finishers lol, I will be saying a similar thing for a few other cards haha
Cool ok
the thing with finishers is that, ideally, you only need one in any given game
And I got a new land in there that is basically a mana dork in it self
I'm all ears
This is amazing
Thank you
I think I'm just a few steps away
- Glissa Sunslayer? Excellent because she doesn't need any support to be good. Glissa Traitor? Meh, you don't have many artifacts that you expect to be in the graveyard. Both are amazing blockers, true. But one Glissa does a lot more than the other.
I have three more decks I considered they win but I'm still a noob so I make rookie mistakes
Ok I did like that card lol buy to the trador
I mostly play on mtgo
- Jagged Scar Archers is in a similar place as the Llanowar Abomination. It's fine for now, but you might want to take it out. Kind of depends on your meta and if people play a lot of flying creatures.
They play good but still I need to trim fat as you are so helping me to do
This may be what I need
Ok I hade that for the reach but I understand
- Yorvo is just a big dumb creature and you have better options that will synergize more with your gameplan so he should definitely be cut for an elf equivalent.
Ok I can start looking for that
- Beast whisperer is one of the best cards in any elf deck. This always stays in.
Ok
- Bloodletter of Aclazotz is an odd one and similar to the Champion of Lambholt in that it's a good card but an odd inclusion for this deck specifically. The fact that it is triple black in a deck that is otherwise so green dominant can be awkward for some games.
Got it
- Questing Beast is similar to Yorvo though it is one of these cards that is just so powerful on its own that you don't really care if it doesn't synergize so feel free to run it for now
Man I got some work to do
Ok
I liked him because of can't contour a creature but I see your point
- Maha is a powerful card, but you don't have any ways of abusing it's effects with small damage pings or [[infest]] style spells so she's mostly just a big dumb flier for you.
Of your 5+ mana value creatures, I'd recommend keeping the Wolverine Riders, and then pick your 3 favorites and cut the others.
Ok
The top end curve/finishers for decks like these tend to be personal preference so have fun with it!
Yeah rider does work for me
Your right
Got it
Man maybe I'll be good like you one day 😂
I want to commend you on your choice of instants, every single one of them is an A+ choice!
I think I'm doing ok for just starting but who knows I just love this game
Ok cool
We all start somewhere
Yes true
I promise you your deck looks much better than my first ones hahahaha
Io thank you I appreciate that
I'm older and semi retired so I'm putting time into learning bin a blast so far
Just got awesome dice set ordered a Matt I'm rolling 😂
Deck boxes the hole nine
- Praetors Council and Rise of the Dark Realms are powerful spells that require big graveyards and it doesn't feel like they fit your gameplan here. Elf decks get their mana from their creatures, so the times when you have the mana to cast a big spell is when you already have a big board. And when you want to cast a mass reanimation spell like these (e.g., just after a wrath), you likely no longer have the mana to cast it.
Ah amazing!
This is now my kitchen table yeah it's bad
I've been playing for nearly my entire life (I literally learned how to read from this game 20+ years ago)
I'm jealous I wish I found this game earlier on life but better late than never right
Man after all this amazing advice I got some work to do
- Whispersilk Cloak is usually more expensive than you want. A lot of newer players love it because unblockable + shroud seems like an unbeatable combo to keep your commander alive. However, you're often better off developing multiple threats such that you're doing fine even if one or two are killed. The cloak just feels so so bad if your opponents use instant speed removal to kill your guy before the equip effect resolves.
O no already bought it 😭 crap
It's by no means a bad card! Just not quite right here? Feel free to run it yourself, maybe you'll have a different experience with it than I
- Coat of Arms is a truly fantastic card that makes for some incredible story moments to tell friends about later. It's also a pain in the ass to play in paper so be prepared for the mental math needed hahaha. I've cut mine from my list simply for this reason.
- Doubling Season is likely too slow for this kind of list. Especially since you don't have that many token makers and basically zero +1/+1 counter enablers.
I only play in paper, sorry. Magic is really just an excuse to socialize with friends
I also have arullia saskia ur drag and kaallia
I do want to learn how play on spell table here though!
Yes I totally agree that's my favorite part
Iv don't me it super easy people helped me set everything up here
This is an amazing community when I play paper I'm the big goof ball at the table that's what it's all about for me
Some one posted a good tutorial here
I've got to go to a meeting now, but feel free to check out how others have built Lathril decks on moxfield: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/public/advanced/views?sort=views&board=mainboard&commanderCardId=Y27yp&commanderCardName=Lathril%2C+Blade+of+the+Elves
Or the EDHREC page for them: https://edhrec.com/commanders/lathril-blade-of-the-elves
Lathril especially has a few different stratgies you can build around, i.e., leaning more into the elf tribal vs the combat damage trigger
Yes I'm still learning all the triggers so I don't play it often to respect the rest of the table
I don't want to hold up the game
So I use my saskia deck mostly to make it easy on every one
Lastly, to my very first point, I cannot recommend enough how powerful the turn one mana dorks are for an elf deck. I'm running something like 10 turn one elf dorks in my deck.
Yes that's what I needed help with the most man this has bin so much help is is going to push me over the top with this deck
And any time you want to play on spell table I'm always down I'm so grateful for the time
Got to run I'll be back soon
Thanks so much
@primal onyx thank you so much for the time and the awesome information
to be fair i didnt look over it super close, didnt even notice the missing 1 mana elves
but ya, run ALL the 1 cmc elves that tap for a green.
my elf deck is red, green. blue so it's quite different, (and really it's just a craterhoof deck)
@wispy mortar thanks for looking is ok it's not your typical elf tribal it gives people fits but i think it's a few steps from being good
