#Yuriko or Satoru Umezawa?

I've been playing magic for a 4-5 months now and i recently finished building my first deck from scratch, (after owning three pre-cons) Yuriko, the tigers shadow, as I've always loved ninjas and wanted to have a really strong, high powered deck to compete with my playgroups busted commander's but i feel the deck it not at that level yet. So I'm left with two options. make her extremely busted (as I've found that unless the deck is cranked up to the max it crumbles) or change the deck slightly and make Satoru Umezawa the commander instead. originally i didn't want to make a Satoru deck because i though that ninjutsuing a blightsteel was a little too mean but soon felt that i was being a hypocrite as being a Yuriko player is just as if not meaner. after being inspired by MoistCritikl's performance of Shuffle up and Play, the idea of making a less salty but equally powerful deck with large threats hiding in the shadows became more appealing. i would like your opinions and experiences on what would be more enjoyable for me and the table and if it is worth to make the change.

This is the Yuriko deck as it stands: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ue_ch8GVD0ai0wdP02T1aw

Heres my two cents its not really what you asked for but as a fairly new player and someone who has gone through what you are going through heres my advice.

I would find a different Ninja commander if you really want to play ninjes. Yuriko does its Yuriko thing and thats pretty much it. Not much to it. I buiilt her when I first got statred becuase ninjas are cool, and I rarely ever play her. She Strong so mid games can get out of hand quickly, So that kinda limits her and the play pattern get stale, Saturo isnt a ninja commander at the end of the day. So if your ok with that you could play him. I mena you can play ninjas but thats not what he wants to do.

There are other options for ninjas though,

[[Goro-Goro and Satoru]]

[[Cazur, Ruthless Stalker]] // [[Ukkima, Stalking Shadow]]

Legendary Creature — Whale Wolf
Partner with Cazur, Ruthless Stalker (When this creature enters the battlefield, target player may put Cazur into their hand from their library, then shuffle.)
Ukkima, Stalking Shadow can't be blocked.
When Ukkima leaves the battlefield, it deals X damage to target player and you gain X life, where X is its power.

if you like the top deck style of Yuriko theres [[Marvo, Deep Operative]] that can minic that playstyle

Legendary Creature — Octopus Rogue
Whenever Marvo, Deep Operative attacks, clash with defending player. (Each clashing player reveals the top card of their library, then puts that card on the top or bottom. A player wins if their card had a higher mana value.)
Whenever you win a clash, draw a card. Then you may cast a spell from your hand with mana value 8 or less without paying its mana cost.

This is just what ive found as someone who has and is currently going through the same thing. I got that yuriko deck that gets little play that I want to take apart but I still want to play ninjas.

#

But to answer your orignal quesion if you want to play Ninjas yuriko all day, Or you can run the [[Satoru the infiltrator]] he seems to want to lean more into ninjas that the origianl one

I think there are some smaller tweaks to your Yuriko deck that could make it less repetitive if you don't want to rebuild the deck (though it sounds like Satoru Umezawa is inspiring changes nonetheless).

#

Your curve is very low with a few top end finishers, but I'd argue for a few more of the high cmc cards with cost reduction built in. I found my Yuriko deck was a lot more fun to pilot when every flip had a high chance to deal massive damage to my opponents.

#

Realistically, how often are you casting Omniscience or Kindred Dominance? But if you were to replace these with some split/delve/aftermath cards, you can sling more spells. There's a similar argument to be made with the newest creature lands.

#

I'm also a little surprised by the number of defensive cards in the list given that Yuriko is often one of the faster decks, how often do the walls or cards like Exquisite Blood feel good to play?

#

Tangentially, I ran into the same issue of repetitiveness with Yuriko after a year or so and ultimately changed my ninjas list. The Yuriko play pattern requires a bunch of one mana 1/1s with evasion which always feel lame to draw and you're never incentivized to play many of the ninjas because Yuriko tends to be better the others.

My new ninjas list is helmed by Rograkh + Silas Renn without any other red cards. This way, I have my cheap evasive creature in the command zone and I'm incentivized to play a lot of ninjas to abuse my zero mana evasive creature (it's like having ornithopter in the command zone). It's definitely a unique way to play ninjas and can share the list if you're interested.
