Not a great idea to shove a voice chat mod onto everyone whose default settings are set to broadcast.

From playing on the official servers, I often thought a proximity voice chat would be handy. I’d vote for it, assuming a) it is easy to mute one’s mic or incoming voice channel and b) the pack sets it all to default off or disabled.

#

(The per server discord voice channels are not great for the common situation of two or more people momentarily collaborating on problem solving. A proximity based voice channel accessible in-game would be a boon.)

Isn't it possible to configure it to be disabled by default? I mean the whole pack has custom configurations.

#

Love the idea though! I now provide vc mod in my private discord server for friends to download.

Anticipating "Won't fly on the official servers"—a valid point, true enough, but I'd argue that reason shouldn't always be an auto-veto. Plenty of happy AoF6 players that can manage getting a server going for them and their friends, but for whom adding mods might be a further step/hurdle they would rather not deal with. Why not give them a built-in option on some mods, like this, even if the official servers won't run the mod(s) in question.

#

Official servers already vary from pack-standard experience, with claim systems, teleports, and what-not.

I agree because it really helps the collaborative and community nature of the server to be able to communicate with your team or publicly with people nearby, this also allows for some armless pranks and fun on the server!

For an example, just look at the hermitcraft pack and their YouTube videos

Chiming back in, now that I have used Simple Voice Chat “in action” with a group of other players; I can confirm:

  • It works well
  • By default you can only talk to, or hear others, via the proximity effect. You have to be close to be heard clearly, and a speakers volume will fade quickly to zero with distance.
  • You can make ad-hoc groups, open or password-protected, that can let, say, a team of players hear and talk to each other regardless of distance.
  • You can easily mute/unmute your own mic or incoming sound
  • You can use push-to-talk or voice-activated mic

It was not a large group, I suppose performance with a full server remains to be tested out.

So default is push-to-talk and with mic indicators on
