Taking an idol through the portal works, and it does open the gate.
Also, holding the same idol and trying to put it on its respective pedestal makes the occupying one drop on the ground. Placing the idol on the altar again opens the gate for like 2 seconds without triggering the cutscene and you can actually run through it.

Also, if you somehow sequencebreak into the area without triggering the fight, you can activate the cutscene for the gateguardian opening without anyone actually being there.
This by itself does nothing, but when you then start the fight and place the idol, the guardian walks in, arenachange and everything happens without a cutscene.
also just noticed... the grimnir arena is classified as "Nowhere" apparently

It’s also possible to dupe idols by dropping them out of bounds at a specific point on the opposite side of the arena (where you get the idols) then dying
If done properly any idols dropped will respawn at the same point even if their chest isn’t opened

Note that it's possible to escape the bounds of the fight even without smuggling an idol in because there are 2 wolf idols in the fight.
