Hello to everyone who contributes to Server Suggestions,

We’ve noticed that many server suggestions posted here are genuinely important and helpful topics for us to consider and potentially implement into our community. In order to prevent derailment from these topics, we are introducing a “serious” feature for any posts that may warrant only pertinent commentary.

All you need to do is type [Serious] at the end of your post, like I did on this post — this will help ensure that all subsequent responses are both on-topic and genuine (minimizing jokes, memes, disruptions, and distractions from the original topic). We’re offering this option as a way to honor and respect the original post and its subject matter.

We hope this helps mitigate any derailment issues that people have been experiencing in server suggestions.

Thank you!

— The BOTC-U Mod Team

Are there really any non-[serious] suggestions?

It feels like it would be better and easier for people to need to tag sugggestions that are not serious rather than the other way around

clear palm
#

I just don't see any reason to not add the tag too yeah (outside of april fools)

This seems intelligent but lacks wisdom.

Even my Story Teller Leaderboards suggestion from many years ago was serious.

  1. I dont think people genuinely make suggestions that are un-serious
  2. Who is the arbiter? What are their rules of policing? When does a relevant tangent become un-serious? What are the consequences for infractions?

Intelligent and unwise.

it seems like it might just be better to implement a policy stating that contributions in server suggestion threads should not derail the discussion or add unnecessary filler to the discussion and should be made in good faith

i feel like this is better off as a pinned post as opposed to a policy change for titles

#

because apart of april fools, i’d say 99.9% of suggestions have been serious

#

so i don’t see the point in tagging on “[serious]” since that’s the status quo, and also since while you’re in the channel, on mobile, the text limit doesn’t actually go far enough to serve as a reminder in the present

seconding Luis, with genuine posts is the norm, tagging of serious posts doesn't make sense, as oppose to tagging of joke posts, what few there have been

#

That and these Forum channels have a tag system; make a Joke tag rather than putting "Joke" in a title?

amber flax
#

agreed with both points. i’m not sure how often derailing truly happens. are you enacting a policy change based on behaviors found only in 1-2 threads that made certain community members feel indicted?

if so, i think it’s wiser to set the expectation that all discussion within a thread should be relevant and not low effort, without the need for a [Serious] tag

Yeah I think less serious posts in more serious suggestions is more annoying than less serious suggestions

"But how can we pretend we are implementing helpful things for the community when in reality we are asking people to self-moderate because we don't want to moderate ourselves?" - some mods probably

God there is some irony in a form being used for mod recruitment from a mod who hasn't been around for over a year.

#

How many times can I fill it out for Huff?

#

Is this a derailment, from a minion? Someone call the police.

quartz mica
#

Well, if we are self regulating, we all are the police lol. That being said, I should make this post relevant or the discussion minions will treat my kneecaps like the English treated the kneecaps of my ancestors, so I will say that I agree with prior posters that it would make more sense to assume posts are serious, unless they have a new tag of [unserious] or something. That being said, I don't think the new serious tag will do any harm, and it might help someone somewhere maybe, so I'm not opposed to it

inner nymph
#

Its so tempting to talk about the English some more, but this is post is tagged as serious so I will just agree wholeheartedly.

#

As our resident representative of England though, maybe Acaila will fall for the bait.

quartz mica

If acaila is the representative of the English, I am the representative of the super straights 😂

amber mist
#

I can talk very seriously about the English and how they've done worse things than kneecap my ancestors....
And to stay on the right side, I'll say the above is entirely serious but not necessarily on topic. So serious and relevant is perhaps what we need to aim for

yeah what I meant was that the default assumption for suggestions should be that they are serious, and there shouldn’t be unnecessary banter happening in them anyway, so the serious tag isn’t something that is necessary

guys

#

why on earth is the default non serious

#

and the jokes don’t require tags

#

like surely if we really need tags

#

you tag the jokes

clear palm

All suggestions are serious

Don't go off-topic
