#Brew Buffet
201 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Hello Everyone. So Brew Buffet is a simple idea; as someone who generally prefers homebrew characters, I wanted a place where I could enjoy them all at once in a "Whale Buffet" style environment. What started as a gimmick has proven quite fun so I've spent a good deal of time attempting to curate a list that plays well, is mechanically coherent, and most importantly incorporates homebrew characters from most every creator I've run across that clearly has poured tons of time and love into their creations (if it's clear you've spent 100+ hours on your characters, and I've seen them, I likely have tried to find a place for one or more of them here barring concerns like balance and IP presence). As of version 1.20 this script is currently at 121 characters not including Travellers, and has consistently created very fun games of clocktower. While still a work in progress - and given its nature it may be an evolving list indefinitely - I just wanted to share it (https://klutzbanana.com/api/public/scripts/a52fswo7ox/Brew Buffet by Listed In Almanac.json) along with a video of it being streamed by The Grimoire below. If you have any ideas of what the script needs, or know of any content by other creators that is not included here that may improve the list, please don't hesitate to let me know. Cheers!
Here is proclaimed "best Norwegian ST" Lars Erik streaming a couple games of v1.15 yesterday (I'll outline the 1.15 vs. 1.20 differences below): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNjEKVvCxP8
What if you took the chaos of Whalebuffet, and added in a dash of Homebrew characters?
That's right, this version of Whalebuffet includes ONLY homebrew characters. I'm sure it will provide a very cozy time, nothing insane at all.

Update 1.20:
Changed the autofill background to something not AI-generated for personal reasons.
Added characters from several new creators.
Removed the Stowaway for balance reasons. (Off of its homescript, it's often too strong to reasonably function as an Outsider)
Removed the Gu Diao for reasons of redundancy. (It no longer did anything unique that was not done better by a different character)
Removed several characters for space. (Adding new characters without removing any is a recipe for long term inflation that is best avoided)
Added 1 Filler Townsfolk to better combat the Worrywort and Miasma effects.
Switched up the names and icons of the filler Demons (originally added to the script due to the Illusionist).
Removed the Lumberjack to reduce logistical overhead for ST.
Removed the Stranger to reduce logistical overhead for ST & players.
Added the Trader (by Lady Mist) specifically to increase the possibility space around private announcements both for Worrywort worlds & for bluffs to allow evil to present more worlds in the face of existing private announcements.
Added the Exiled (by Gobinator) to allow evil players to access Outsider effects.
Removed the Huli Jing and the Facechanger for both balance and logistical reasons.
Removed the Hangman. (Was an awkward fit on an alphabetically organized script, and I wanted to remove one of my own characters given that I needed to add the Nosey Parker as a filler character).
Removed the Autarch and the Trophy Hunter to remove hidden evil win-cons on a script where players are likely to not have read all the characters.
Watchlist as of 7/30:
Looking for characters to add from The Academy as well as SCP: Fragmented Veil.
Still watching Miasma for balance reasons. Currently seems sufficiently balanced due to forced-falseness, but it's being watched.
Always on the lookout for new necessary jinxes between included characters given that this is meant to parallel Whale Buffet (which itself parallels the full official game in size and requires many more jinxes than are included here).
We did have a fun Cardinal + Turncoat interaction yesterday, as the Turncoat selected the Cardinal, only one of them could effectively be evil
(due to SoI)
I did see that. I was hoping at some point the Cardinal would turn evil due to the Turncoat, assume it was to their own ability, and then turn back good and point the finger at a previous nominator, but alas the cards didn't lay that out. 🙂
I think that everything alignment-flipping wise on the script is fine as is with SoI, but do point out if there's something I'm overlooking. Strangest interaction I can see is that the Carpenter might create a Good Minion, but that's not necessarily a problem since they don't get to pick which one.
The thing I do have my eye on right now and wonder if it needs a jinx is Exiled + Sybil. It creates a kind of "free form" effect that good can't account for and doesn't know about (kind of like Wizard), and that isn't necessarily fun.
ooh
Hello Harry & Co. Thanks for the Wyvern. Let me know if you have any objection to how you're being accreditted.
Gave +1 Thanks to @frozen oar (current: #1882 - 4)
Oh hey that's me :3
Heads up, our collection wasn't a solo effort - @vale ledge put just as much work into these characters and did all of the writeup for the characters, he should be credited as well
Should I change the Almanac Entry (you can see it here: https://www.bloodstar.xyz/p/Jagrevi/BrewBuffet/almanac.html) to say "Harry & Brendan & Co."?
*sorry, Bendan
Probably just say "Harry & Co, Bendan"
Okay, so he's after the Co. Not a part of the Co, and 3rd.
mhm
we have the "& Co" part in our username because we are a plural system
:P
"Hootie and the Blowfish and also Jim" 🙂
Okey Dokes
Changed. It's now accreddited to "Harry & Co. + Bendan"
I feel like I just used too many consonants. Hold on ...
Accredited.
There we go.
ty :3
Ran 1.2 tonight, it's still good!
Well, I'm certainly glad to hear that, although technically that just means I didn't ruin it. 🙂 I found the vod but I'll have to watch it later as I'm headed out the door soon. Either way, please let me know if you have any feedback on characters that are causing problems or roles that need to be filled as I'm very open to your feedback. For the time being, I'm going to stop tweaking the list and focus on importing all the Almanac entries to the Bloodstar Almanac as I think that'll make the bigger difference in player experience.
We made the dumbest bag, with Hannibal as the demon and Lunger as one of the minions. Highly recommended!
We can't decide on the pronunciation of Lunger though, I'm assuming "like the organ" since the icon is a pair of lungs, but it's 50/50 that and "lunge-r" as in "someone who does a lunge".
Oh, this looks nice!
It's Lung - Er. It was a slang term given to people with respiratory diseases in the old west, and the idea of the character is that the actual Minion is Tuberculosis itself (which manifests in the first person it kills). Here is a clip of it being said (admittedly by an actor) in the film Tombtstone (at 1:15): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXCvvi-mx08
"I'm Your Huckleberry" TOMBSTONE Scene (1993) Val Kilmer
PLOT: Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) and his brothers, Morgan (Bill Paxton) and Virgil (Sam Elliott), have left their gunslinger ways behind them to settle down and start a business in the town of Tombstone, Ariz. While they aren't looking to find trouble, trouble soon finds them when they bec...
you should also eye out the Stardust Collection by @prisma ermine, since its got some nice characters ideas
sadly, i never got to play with any of the characters here myself cause i didnt discover this until after my group had gotten more busier and more gravitated to TTT
Well, The Grimoire channel (https://discord.com/channels/1103550416379187293/1192368957651427328) is hosting Brew Buffet Sunday as an official event if you want to play with some of these characters this Sunday. As to the Stardust Collection, I'll go check those out. There's a chance I might have overlooked it by accidentally conflating it with "The Travel By Starlight Collection" by Harry & Co. + Bendan.
sounds fun, although sadly im pretty booked cause of college stuff, i hope ill be able to cram into it
nonetheless, thanks for offering!
Fun fact:
Travel by Starlight was originally named "Stardusk Chronicles" until we realized that two collections sounding so close to each other was probably not a great idea
XD
Ts'all good.
It's quickly become a favourite over there!
Got to play in a game today thanks to the official event over at The Grimoire. I played as the Reactionary and decided to bluff Blabbermouth to try to fish out the phrase by asking people for fake phrases to help muddy my Blabbermouth phrase (hoping they'd read that as me asking for the code word), get other people to say them under the same pretext, and see if someone would accidentally trigger the execution and confirm the word for me (or that just by repeating said phrase to the right person I'd be seen as evil). Didn't work. Later in the game when the Chessmaster poisoned the Bookbinder, they realized it was now worth the risk to just say the word openly which let them evil team find each other late game, but I was already dead by that point.
Minor Update v1.21:
Paid $5 to the TheNounProject to upgrade the art for Gobinator's "Archer" character
(Seems like an easy and cheap solution for any characters people post in the future without very well-polished art)
Also normalized some spellings and added a small collection of missing flavortexts.
Finally, recreated some of the High Seas of Mutiny icons for the Almanac since Gordon's originals seem unretrievable directly from Imgur.
That's it. Just minor polishing; have some larger changes in mind, but want to consult several people before rushing into any them as I want the list to feel relatively stable at the moment while still considering how it should evolve in the future from feedback.
Excellent! Just in time for my event over at The Grimoire (for players who want to join, my GRIM tag should get your there - the games start at <t:1754848800:t>)
TBA Archivist did get cut when Obscrul did in early drafts, but I am amenable to the argument that it might fit well in a script with 20 Demons in which identifying which specific Demon it is could be immensely valuable and it should be readded.
Yeah that's my thinking
It's good feedback, honestly. I'm swayed.
After the three games yesterday, yes! Finding which demon is in play is fairly crucial (but watch as 3 players pick Archivist and I get to lie to two of them)
Minor Update v1.22:
Replaced the Astronomer with the Archivist for the reasons aforementioned.
Added a Conjuror / Hannibal Jinx to prevent the Conjuror from simply recruiting the Demon onto the Good Team.
[Still need to find time to do the icon optimization]
Proposed Update (v1.30)
Rather than simply updating the JSON this time around, I’ve decided to construct a proposed update and link that alongside the “current version”. Reason being, biased as I obviously am, I really like the inclusivity and the discovery of the underlying gimmick of Brew Buffet (that’s it’s a bit of a celebration of creativity from across the community) and the quickest way I can imagine to spoil that is to continue to revise it strictly based on my own takes. That being said, I believe it still needs to be updated and improved over time, so my solution for the time being is to just propose what changes I think should be made, why I currently think that, and just kind of generally open up the space to commentary if people thought differently.
Realistically, I’m not expecting a huge amount of feedback here as it remains kind of a niche script, but that just means that any feedback you elect to give here is likely to have an outsized influence.
Let’s discuss the proposed changes:
1. The Switch to “ Whalebuffet + “ rules.
This is the really big one. It’s no secret that this script is directly mimicking “Whalebufffet”, a popular script that shares the same gimmick, but with all of the TPI characters instead of community characters. Well, there has been a trend I’ve been seeing on Whalebuffet games on the app lately – an innovation that seems to have been spearheaded by a user named “Lemon”. Essentially, Lemon started running Whalebuffet games that, instead of assigning players a role and having them choose their character, had players choose 1 Townsfolk, 1 Outsider, 1 Minion, and 1 Demon and then informed them which role they got. There are a couple small advantages to this, but the big one is that it allows setup abilities to be functional again.
Solving for the Outsider count is a significant part of the game, and traditional Whalebuffet rules (and, by extension, original Brew Buffet rules) just entirely sacrificed that part of the game in service to the gimmick. With Lemon’s rules, this is no longer necessary, meaning not only does the game become a little more solvable for the good team, many characters have their intended functionality restored.
On Brew Buffet specifically, this also massively cuts down on the excessive and awkward Bootleggers rules, such as “If a Demon chooses to be the Faerie Townsfolk, the ST can add an extra minion by adding a Lunger or removing a Hooligan, etc.”. In short, I think this change makes the script a bit more elegant, a bit more balanced, and even has fringe benefits (such as the ST being able to favor more novel character choices for diversity’s sake should they so choose).
This is a proposal that I believe manages to increase ST agency without reducing player agency, which strikes me as a significant boon. The only potential downsides I can identify are that this increases the amount of reading players have to do during setup in order to choose 4 roles, and prevents the ST from claiming blamelessness for an unbalanced setup (although they can still choose who the evil team is arbitrarily should they so wish).
2. Sentinel -> Banjo Player
Making Outsider Count a part of the game once again means making sure the Outsider Count is actually solvable. In turn, this means I believe the Sentinel has to (or at least should) go. Still, I wanted a way for the ST to still have some control in varying the Outsiders, and, importantly, a way to construct worlds with additional Outsiders that didn’t lean on the small number of Outsider Modification characters on the script.
The best solution I could think of for this was importing the Banjo Player, a Sentinel Analogue that generates a kind of “Widow Ping” whenever it adds an Outsider. This could, for example, be used by a Vindaloo Beast (a Demon with [+2 Outsiders]) to help hide its presence and bluff that it received a Banjo Player ping to explain one of the additional Outsiders. Also, it is formatted in a way where, like the Sentinel, it can be entirely ignored if the ST wishes (or just forgets about it).
In short, I think this is the best way to preserve what the Sentinel gave the script while making the Outsider count meaningful and solvable.
3. Prospector -> Scholar
Making Outsider Count a part of the game again means the script can benefit from a “Balloonist” type Outsider modification (a good role that can be claimed and potentially count for an additional Outsider). The best (subjective) homebrew character I know to do this, and certainly the most popular and well known, is the Scholar from Fall of Rome. I just think this is a great addition if we move to a ruleset where setup abilities function as they are intended to.
The Prospector, on the other hand, has not received much love or attention. It is a strangely templated Minion finder from a script where the existence of the Lunger, Nocker, and Lickspittle (all characters that modify the Minion count) take up so much of the script’s real estate that solving for how many Minions are even in play is a much more significant affair. Finally, the Prospector is a character from my own script, and given that Banjo Player is as well it wouldn’t feel right adding a character of my own without removing one too given the community-oriented gimmick of the script, so this feels like an easy sacrifice.
4. Cobbler -> Funeral Officiant
Funeral Officiant is a new character from a homebrew player I’ve talked to recently that has no existing representation on the script, and has some interesting ideas that have been getting some attention of late.
Cobbler is a character that has not been commonly chosen, is from a creator that already has a very large influence on the script with over a dozen characters appearing, and feels a little redundant with Old Seadog, which has proven to be a more popular choice, so I think is a reasonable cut.
Balloonist
Ah, typo. Thank you, I will go correct that when I have the time. (EDIT: Also, sorry I apparently just deleted your "fire" reaction; it popped up half a second before I deleted the line below to repost with the appropriate header coding)
5. Yingyangshi -> Scribe
Scribe is a new character from a homebrew player I’ve talked to recently that just recently decided to get into homebrewing and has already created something here that has already caused a little bit of chatter on other forums such as patters’. Also, I think the character synergizes nicely with some of the existing “code phrase” based characters on Brew Buffet.
The Yingyangshi I think is a reasonable cut for the same reason Cobbler is. It’s another character that feels very similar to the more popular Old Seadog, and is from a source that already has existing representation, so I think it’s an easy cut to make room for the new and currently unrepresented.
So that’s it, those are the proposed changes for Version 1.30. Nothing is official yet (although a 1.30 JSON is also available in the Almanac), so please let me know what you think. The more input I can get from others, the more I can hopefully direct the script in a way that others will enjoy.
Oh, I'll also mention since I didn't in this thread that it saw another random stream game this past Wednesday, if anyone is just randomly scrolling through this thread and wants to see a game of the current version of the script (or knows they personally have a character on the script and wants to see if it made it on stream). There's a fun twist that happens part way though the game, too: https://youtu.be/3hnAIZnfK5k?t=4928

Actual Update 1.31
Did some playtesting, got some feedback, learned some things.
1. Changes 4 & 5 from the proposed update enacted. Changes 1, 2, & 3 abandoned.
While the two newest character additions proved to be reasonably popular (changes 4 & 5 listed above), after some playtesting and feedback from the regular Sunday game with the people over at The Grimoire, I've decided to not move ahead with points 1, 2, & 3 from "Proposed Update 1.30" (outlined above). While potentially making setups more balanced, switching to "Whalebuffet +" rules significantly increases setup time on an already complex script (and forcing players new to the script to select 4 separate characters does increase barrier to entry more than intended). Changes 2 & 3 were supplemental to change 1, so dropping them for now as well (it remains a Sentinel script, for example).
2. Two Ghost Caller Jinxes Added
The script should now feature 2 Ghost Caller jinxes that prevent an evil Ghost Caller from turning good and pointing out the Demon. While I am glad to have played in a game with a Deserter turning a Ghost Caller good - and evil did actually manage to win that game - it is in keeping with spirit of existing jinxes that this be jinxed as well. Although, all credit where it's due, good play Deserter.
3. Despair Squid -> Sollos
Unfortunately, Despair Squid has officially changed abilities outright as per Despair Squid creator @sweet flame . As such, it wouldn't feel right to keep it here with an ability it is no longer intended to have (and it's new ability is both a bit more powerful than desired here, and more redundant with existing roles on the script), so it is being replaced by the Sollos from @small siren's "The Academy". Vindaloo Beast is staying, though.
4. Jabberwock Art Update
Another creator/source-based update, the Jabberwock (by @cerulean orchid) has new art, and as such the art here has been updated to reflect the creator's current vision of the character.
(The accreditation and links on the Almanac still need updating to reflect the update, but I will do so asap)
Gg
FYI if the Blabbermouth just tries to circumvent their ability by speaking pure gibberish/saying a list of phrases, the Minions have every right to just guess the list in its entirety and win
(And also as hystrex said, conjuror is BRUTAL here 😭)
That is a fair point.
Yeah, frankly it might come off eventually when room is needed but ... the icon is just so beautiful. I appreciate it was a grab from the noun project, but ... it's just really good.
Update 1.32
1. Removed Hun Dun and Jabberwock to make space for 2 new characters from the Clocktower Laboratory Experiment.
So after playing around with some prototype homebrew characters over the past few weeks, I thought there was a good Demon that a player had posted as part of the "Clocktower Laboratory Experiment" that would be good to move on to Brew Buffet. Adding it here requires adding an Illusionist partner for it and that's not quite polished enough yet to be included, I think, so neither is not being added in this update, but I've been talking with the creator and some of the players that have played with it on a different script and there is a desire to see it added to this script, and I am more than willing.
This is just the preliminary change to carve out the appropriate space first.
2. Added the Frog Footman. Removed the Prospector.
Character is made by @cerulean orchid
Part of removing 2 Demons (see above) is trying to make sure that Brew Buffet still, if possible, does not lose representation. Unfortunately, the 2 Demons that it makes the most sense to cut on the list include the Jabberwock, which at this time is the only character included on the script from Tom R.'s Wonderland. Tom R. has clearly put so much effort into his Wonderland project, that it would have been a shame for Brew Buffet not to acknowledge and link to this project in any way, so I scoured it for another character that could easily be added without causing too many complications and eventually settled on the Frog Footman. The ability is simple, elegant, and powerful.
To make room for the Frog Footman, the Prospector has been removed. As mentioned in an earlier update, the Prospector is a strange little Minion finder designed to exist on a much smaller script where Minion count is much more likely to vary. More importantly, it comes from an over-represented source - me - and since the Frog Footman is being added in order to maintain representation, removing the most awkward and least impactful non-filler character for which I am the source I think is most keeping to the spirit of the project.
oh thats a very old version of it
The one on the JSON has your most recent art
yep
It just felt a little rude to post your nice new PDF almanac entry right next to the thread where you yourself posted it on the same forum, so I went for the smaller simpler one instead. Like ... a reaction video where I just watch your movie and then I'm in the corner saying "yep".
So I went with the understated old one.
that cool
The credit link in the Almanac currently goes to that PDF though, as I assume that's how you would want your work to be presented. Is that accurate?
Or would you rather I link to the old Bloodstar link?
3. Several small typos have been corrected.
As some people had pointed out, there were some discrepancies on the JSON between character abilities and night order reminder text. All the known instances have been corrected. If one has been missed or forgotten, please notify me right away (the JSON itself is over 113,000 characters, so it's not unthinkable that there are other such typos in there).
4. The broken Vindaloo Beast image link has been replaced with a rehosted version.
The JSON image link has now been moved to a rehost that is currently sitting on Lars' Clocktower Laboratory server. I have made a post in Ben Burns' Homebrew Thread to let him know about the link breakdown.
Still my favourite script here as well! I'll be running it on The Grimoire next Sunday (click my tag and join!)
Hello where do i find the most updated version of this?
where are you hosting the images atm?
There is always a link at the top of the Almanac with the most recent version: https://www.bloodstar.xyz/p/Jagrevi/BrewBuffet/almanac.html
They are mostly rehosted on imgur, but there are some exceptions where they use the same hosting as their native scripts (although I've shied away from that due to some issues with links going inoperative from scripts whose creators have gone MIA). The 1 exception to those two categories is specifically the Vindaloo Beast, I believe, as Ben Burns' script has had broken image links as of the last time I checked (although I do see right now there is a new post in his thread that I haven't read, so maybe that's no longer the case).
Yeah I hosted Ben's on my imgur but it no longer works in the UK
Update 1.34
1. Added the Ouroboros. (From a Community Homebrew Project at The Grimoire - Design by DrDeath)
Had a conversation with a TheGrimoire ST (Lars Erik) back in August, where he thought it would be great for Grimoire regulars to have a mechanism to get their own creations onto Brew Buffet and that a Homebrew script (regular size) made from community submissions would be a fun way to do that. I agreed, with the small caveat that this new project should be its own independent thing as well, and not just be about feeding Brew Buffet. Well, Lars put a huge amount of time and effort into his own project - a website where users can submit their own Homebrews to be experimentally mixed with other submissions, now called "Clocktower Laboratory" (https://beta.clocklaboratory.com/) - and has regularly been running experimental scripts assembled from a hodge-podge of various designs people have submitted.
I've had conversations with several people since, having not forgotten about the original "secret agenda" of Clocktower Laboratory, that the Ouroboros (by DrDeath) was one of the most appealing designs to come out of Clocktower Laboratory "Experiment 1" (I believe Lars has since moved onto Experiment 2). After a handful of conversations with relevant parties about token art and power balance, I'm excited to add Ouroboros onto BB, as I've seen first hand the fun gameplay situations it can create.
2. Added the Hollow. (From Lars' Clocktower Labs Project - Design by Physco [Alex] )
Having talked openly with people over the past month or two about wanting to add the Ouroboros to Brew Buffet, someone mentioned the obstacle of the Illusionist (by u/Gobinator) on the script demanding a "choice pattern partner". Physco [Alex] stood up and offered to design a Demon that shares the same pick pattern as DrDeath's Ouroboros and, having gone through a small number of iterations, I thought their design (and art) was polished enough to give it a go.
1 slight alteration was made to the design for logistical reasons, with apologies ("Each night*, a player dies" was changed to "Players might die", which is not a meaningless change). This change was largely made to simplify the already slightly intimidating textbox and reduce the need for 2 different night reminders for the Hollow on the same night (which is not enabled by the official app, and would be a necessity given the difference in priority of killing a player and affecting player information from two non-causally linked sub-abilities).
3. Corrected Frog Footman Night-Order.
This was simply in error on 1.32. (A consequence of just ripping it off TomR's home JSON for the character). It has been corrected.
------ Non-Update Stuff ------
Also, I still haven't managed to find anything from SCP: Fragmented Veil that fits well on this script, but haven't forgotten. The SCP designs are just so out there that it's not easy finding something that both plays well with others and isn't a large cognitive ask for players, among other softer criteria. I still peruse the collection from time to time, though.
Although ...
(you may have accidentally said you're adding the ouroboros twice here)
Oops. Thanks, I'll go fix that.
Gave +1 Thanks to @frozen oar (current: #1874 - 5)
Update 1.35
(Rehosted all images on Klutzbanana to make the script accessible to the UK once again)
oh wow
The Sphinx has been updated! I got the new ability and art from the creator who wanted me to let everyone know.
