everytime i try to play gmod it just directs me to an old version i reinstalled the game many times and still on that old version i cant play with my friends

go here, it will open the game folder. Delete bin/ folder, go to garrysmod/ and delete steam.inf, garrysmod.ver, bin/ (yes, the other one), addons/, lua/, gamemodes/.

Then verify game files through Steam. I do not know why just validating doesn't fix it for you, maybe your PC is running out of Disk space, or your entire Steam is marked as read-only or Steam shows some error during download. Definitely sounds like an issue with Steam, but deleting those files manually should help Steam redownload the updated files.
