what
The Nintendo 64 game "The New Tetris" introduced both piece holding and a lesser-known gameplay mechanic where you could create 4x4 blocks (No gaps, no pieces protruding in or out) that would solidify into gold or silver depending on if the tetraminos used to make it were all the same kind or not.
It's appeared in, as far as I know, zero other Tetris games. It is, however, a pretty fun little thing to add to the Tetris formula that makes basically zero gameplay difference, but does give me a lot of satisfaction to do
Oh christ it was never supposed to move
One sec, let me make a VERY artistic diagram
This makes a silver square, for instance
This makes a gold square
I honestly don't know
I think they increase the score given, but let me check
The wiki's I've seen absolutely do not specify
There are pages detailing the rules of creating them, the algorithms used, patterns you can use to create them
Seemingly no information on what they're for
I like them for the dopamine of seeing them turn into a little square and knowing that I did a good job
Yeah, that might be technically "early" at that point
