I cannot think of a more overrated anime than Pokemon the Series: XY. It is probably the worst of the Pokemon anime series, even behind Gold and Silver. I will elaborate in a reply to this comment with a list of why I think this way.

-Ash himself has basically been robbed of personality and became a generic Shonen protagonist.
-Character arcs were rushed quite a lot (Goodra's arc is especially rushed)
-Ash Greninja is some of the anime bull crap to ever happen in Pokemon.
-Serena as a character is overrated, feeling extremely clichéd and very derivative of May and Dawn.
-Pokemon Showcases were just watered down Contests, and just felt sexist at times.
-The pacing is all over the place, with it being either blindingly fast or agonizingly slow.

-The Kalos League is a rushed disappointment.
-The buildup to the Team Flare arc (excluding the specials because those aren't really available anymore) is laughably bad compared to the masterful buildup to the Team Galactic arc.
-All 3 of the movies that this anime got were either mediocre or just plain AWFUL.
-A lot of the rivals get swept under the rug by the time the league happens.
-Clemont gets effectivly sidelined after the Gym Battle.
-The Flare arc is overrated compared to the scale of the Galactic arc.

Overall, XY feels less like the Pokemon anime, but more like a bargain bin Shonen anime.

Are my criticisms valid?

I mean, maybe, if all you do is analyze a kids show

you're within your right to do that

I just don't think many people will criticize and pick through everything from a kids show like that the way you are

and given it's a kids show, I don't think so many will care

it's not how it objectively is, it's how you subjectively remember and experienced it as a kid

and for me, and seemingly others, we enjoyed it a lot

it may have felt more "mass marketed", but there were aspects of it that I enjoyed that outweigh the negatives a decent amount, plus, I remember it fondly

the show felt rushed (there is a whole seaosn called missing pieces) but im prob gonna hold that off for a bit
and my own personal preference for a tiny bit more for my favorite romcoms is a bit spice into it
