Now, this isn't a homophobic rant or anything, but i really do think that the percent chance for married straight npcs should be 90 percent. This takes place around the 1970s, when gay marriages we not common. in the game however, i've seen that the majority of couples are gay. it just doesn't feel like a noir detective game because i can't pretend to use the "the husband killed his wife cause' he found an overcooked cassarole" meme..

This isn't necessarily our Earth though, there also weren't many publicly nonbinary people in the 1970s. Obviously it's more of a sexually progressive society

I think this is mostly an algorithm thing with the game randomly generating male, and female and then assigning spouses completely randomly. Nonbinary looks like it's added onto people randomly at the end. Makes the world gen faster I bet

Just my observations as a player

#

The low rates of straight relationships is just because relationships seem to be assigned randomly at worldgen

Oh yeah I understand that part but I really don't get where you got the part about Nonbinary assignment, I think they would just get generated the same as Male and Female NPCs

sinful scroll

They're generated as male or female and then later assigned nonbinary. You can tell because their birth certs show them as male or female

Damn that's cool

#

Definitely a cool extra bit of representation that way then

There's probably just a % chance of being nonbinary that it assigns down the list

#

But the result is a staggeringly low percentage of straight relationships

Yeah I've definitely had worlds with very low straight relationships but my current one has had almost exclusively straight relationships

#

So yeah it's def just the randomness but I still like keeping that element of random generation for the game

I had a case where I was investigating an infidelity, my client's partner was an enforcer, who had gone to a weapons dealer to buy pistol ammo. The whole time, my friends and I were worries she was going to kill my client. By the time I found the mistress, she didn't answer the door. I saw the red on the wall before I saw the body.

I can guarantee the people being gay are not the problem.

Im unsure if the genders/relationships are a political thing, or a social criticism or just RNG.

But here is a real thing that happened to me relating to this

Infedelity: one guy suspects his man is cheating. OK cool. Investigate, yep, sleeping with a woman. Must hurt as a gay guy for that to happen....but it gets worse

The cheater woman is in relationship with a woman.

So now I have couples pretending to be gay to hide their heteroness. Read whatever politics you wish into this, because ive no idea.
Is it intended , then k. if it isnt well you dont have to tell me, but you can fix it low key while we arent paying attention

yes but ... considering how its all normal in this city.

My head canon was closet hetero, and im sticking with it cause its funnier

Everyone calls their spouses and partners explicitly that - spouses and partners. It's both easier on the developer to use one word to describe a plethora of relationships than adding checks for genders and introducing unnecessary bugs because gender roles

Tbh I never even noticed. Making more or less couples straight or gay wouldn't really make NPC Relationships "better" just.. more or less straight?
ALSO just because there were less gay mariages doesn't mean there were less gay people. Granted if gender stuff is something you DO care about, I thiiiink there is a mod that changes something or other about gender, just don't quote me cause I really don't know.

AND honestly, I'd rather have every configuration of people in equal amounts otherwise things would get incredibly boring. Basically would guarantee that 90% of the time you have a "cheater" case you can guess the gender of the partner. Keeping everything equally as likely to occur (not just hetero/homo sexuality) keeps the game from getting easier, repetitive, or bland.

And that applies to way more than just gender / sexuality.

What i would like to see though is the NPCs meeting up with friends. during their weekends

making the address book more organic
