#Tasks Suck

Why do I think this?

  • If a skill or profession can be leveled via normal gameplay, I have it leveled in the 50's or 60's.
  • If it requires turn-ins, I have it around the 20's or 30's.

ADHD? Maybe.
Not sure if ADHD plays a part in it, but I believe it does.
So I tend to hyperfixate on professions or tasks, but I also have a problem with "out of sight, out of mind."

Turn-in Materials?
I have PLENTY of the materials required for turn-ins.
I just never remember to turn them in.

Task reset?
If someone calls it out in local, I'll remember and go do them.
But if our settlement is out of a specific turn-in mat, I'll go start gathering it, and the next thing I know, 5 hours have passed and that material isn't even on the current turn-in anymore. But at least we have plenty now, right? I just hope I remember the turn-ins.

Boat Upgrade?
All of this, mixed with the fact that I'm traveling WAY far from our settlement to acquire T6 Oceanfish makes it feel like I'm using my boat too much to be able to get a boat upgrade.

Reason for Post
Now I understand that there is an update coming at some point that will add ocean cargo that will help with Svim's experience gain. and typically, I take a "let them cook" approach to these things. But the reason I'm making a post about this one is I'm really hoping that the ocean cargo isn't just added as a Svim task turn-in.

Reason for Doubt
I commented during the stream something like "No more tasks, PLEASE! They're unfriendly to ADHD players." 3Blave responded by asking for a clarification. I'm not typically a twitch or livestream viewer, but I've noticed that longer messages largely go ignored, but I responded with a longer post describing the problem, and understandably, it went unread.
But I got the timing of my comment (at ocean cargo announcement) and the response lead me to believe that they might be going the task turn-in route.

I really hope not.
Tasks SUCK (in my opinion)

The only reason I brought ADHD into this is, I'm still learning about it, and other friends with ADHD have mentioned similar problems.

Also, I wanted to mention, I've never been a fan of this type of progression.
Do you want to prevent me from over-leveling by dumping a bunch of materials?

  • I understand that. It could make skills way easier to level (on one end) or require WAY too many materials (on the other end), depending on how much XP turn-ins give.
  • But it also means that if you miss out on any of the windows, you fall behind on potential levels.

In comparison, even if I've largely ignored hunting, I can still get leather from the market.
When the "mounts follow you" update drops, sure I'm behind on where I could have theoretically been if I had been leveling that skill, but I can just start hunting and working towards that.

Can't I just start working on turn-ins now?

  • I sure can. I can go do turn-ins right now. But when I'm done, I can maybe set an alarm on my phone? Maybe log off so I don't get deep into another task and forget? But I still can only ever do turn-ins at the 4 hour intervals.

I had always assumed that the tasks were a temporary way to give levels until each skill had a gameplay method of being leveled. I even had hope with the "Sailing XP" update for Svim.
I felt like it wasn't enough XP for the amount of sailing I was doing, but I was hopeful that they would increase that after some time.

But now, I'm back to sailing around the world, not gaining any Svim XP, and getting passed by people with better/faster boats than me.

And my only hope is for a future update that's going to add cargo that I may or may not be able to find, since like traveler fruit, anyone can just grab it before I even see it.

And I need to cross my fingers and HOPE that it's not another turn-in item with a timer.

At the very least, if there is no timer on it, I can go out and farm them or buy them, assuming they don't become the new traveler fruit.

I think the same about, I unlocked the most things I wanted and now I'm not turning in anything anymore. Unless I have it ready in my storage and need some money. But I'm not doing it for the exp anymore.

I also dislike tasks and all "daily" style quests in other games. Unfortunately they are very popular with designers these days as they are easy to implement and drive player retention as players feel psychologically obligated to do them for the fear of missing out.

In the long term though I think they lead to burn out and prevent players from exploring more time consuming activities far from the task NPCs as that leads to missing out on the task cooldowns!

I think most skills requiring various professions input in order to level them is flawed. Skills should all mainly be levelled by actually doing them, like professions are now.

Even for the skills where you can level by performing the skill, those exp gains are massively overshadowed by the huge chunks of exp you get for stockpiling mats and turning in tasks every 4 hours

When the game first released on Early Access, I actually did tasks. I would spend the entire 4 hours getting the turn-in materials, usually being short a few items and not getting all turn-ins.

The problem was that was ALL that I ever did. No personal upgrades, no pitching in on settlement projects.

But once I got efficient enough at the game to get those mats much faster, I started getting my turn-ins done in more like 2 hours, then I would forget the reset.

And I agree, FOMO is a terrible reason to keep playing a game. It's why I eventually left Destiny.

I still think than tasks should accumulate up to 24 hours to at least alleviate this. 1 it means less "need to log on every 4 hours" fomo and it means when playing longer sessions you can still choose when to do them more freely. Like log on for the day, knock out all your qued tasks and than go about your business knowing even if yo uplay for more than 4 hours you can just worry about it tomorrow

On Skills in general, the devs have said they are at around 1 to 5% of where they want them content wise, and similar to the recent construction additions, they want to expand on the other skills too.

They talked about a few things they have considered such as with sailing, where cargo spawns in the ocean and Svim will take those for sailing exp, etc

I'm pretty sure it's not a task. It was proposed as a way to step away from tasks

my hope is you gather it, gain XP and get a random item
