I signed up pre-alpha 1 and got a pre-alpha cube. Was I also supposed to get an alpha cube or is it just one or the other?

Pre-alpha cube is from signing up before start of alpha test (duh) or from participating in the pre-alpha test. Alpha cube is from signing during the alpha testing. You could only get 1. If you had an alpha cube and then bought the Alpha Supporter Badge, it "upgraded" your cube making it pre-alpha cube.

Huh weird... I had been in every alpha since a1 and only got one cube. No idea how that works

You get both! Pre-alpha is different than the a1-3.

It's pre-alpha and "beta" cubes afaik.
