Although BitCraft only supports Windows, it has been run successfully on linux operating systems. With the move to Steam, there could be more Linux users yet (though Steam only supports the latest 64-bit Ubuntu LTS. With the end of Windows 10 support, there are likely to be many more linux users out there. Because Linux is quite customizable and has many versions, one person's solutions may not work for another; but if all the Linux users have a place to pool their knowledge, maybe we can all have a better chance to play.

I played alpha 1 and 2 with Ubuntu 22 LTS with an AMD Ryzen 5, 32GB of RAM and a Nvidia 1060 gpu. This combination did not work for me in alpha 3. I will start the early release using Mint 22, the CPU upgraded to Ryzen 9 and 64GB of RAM. I will be trying the latest stable Proton compatibility layer.
Hi, also wanting to try out playing bitcraft on endeavour os. Haven't played closed alpha, so looking forward to steam ea
although I tried Mint for supposed better Wayland support, I have so far found no difference from X11. Mint, as installed, lacked vswap which gave games very low frame rate. This was a useful fix: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/speed-mint.html#ID1.1
have you played other steam mmo games with Endeavour?
Idk if you should post this in #1215070623626174494, I think it fits better in #1260252711148978249
I disagree. BitCraft developers are willing to help with some individual issues of linux use, but in general they do not have interest in developing Linux compatibility, therefore this is more of a peer-to-peer issue that a feedback issue.
actually, never thought about it. I haven't played a lot of mmorpg games, but if you consider warthunder mmo, then yes I did 🙂
I asked from the point of view of graphics rendering frame rate. MMOs tend to be more demanding, though there are also plenty of high-graphics single player games. Early on, Bitcraft had some rendering issues that caused some high CPU temperatures for some players - mostly resolved I think. And framerate issues were just on my mind. Of course there can be all kinds of other issues we won't foresee until the next version is out. . .
My setup is i9 12900, 32GB ram, and rtx 3070. If comparing framerate in games on windows, my observations are:
- generally there is small overhead, but almost everything runs fine.
- for reasons unknown for me, counter strike 2 struggles a lot
- there is a tendency that my fans spin louder comparing to windows, but I haven't looked at cpu and gpu usage, so can't say much
I am writing this just from top of my mind, so there is no absolute truth in what I said.
NixOS user here, glad to see that BitCraft runs on Linux, was the only reason I waited to buy it :>!
Out of curiosity what proton version were you guys using?
In the first two alpha tests, I ran BitCraft using only Wine. In the third alpha, I could not find a working combination - neither Wine installation of the launcher, nor any Proton configuration in Steam. However, other linux users were successful. I do not know their exact means of success, but I know at least one who used some Steam configuration.
I had good results with the stress test on May 16. I played the entire duration of the test without a crash. There were a few occasions of "you moved too fast" or yoyoing, but they were minor. The bitcraft launcher was full-screen, but I could move to another monitor and use discord and come back to the game with no problems. In alpha 1 and 2 I could not do that - leaving the game window would break key-bindings. Now I am using Wayland windowing and a later version of Ubuntu (24), and of course it played through Steam where I used the Proton 9 compatibility tool.
Unfortunately it runs full-screen on my primary monitor, so I can't see the system tray where my CPU temperature monitor is located, but I did not smell any smoke . . .
It should be noted that most issues during the may 16 test were not linux exclusive and were due to the test generally being "unstable" in that way.
I abandoned use of Wayland; it was causing a LOT of additional cpu load for some reason. I have seen various reasons proposed for this, but have not taken time to sort out the issue since using the Ubuntu desktop with X11 windowing has been working fine on other games. If I have any trouble with Bitcraft, I will try Wayland again.
Had no troubles with X11 or Wayland through most of the Pre-Alpha and Alpha tests on various distros. Wayland usually does have more load, though. It's newer vs the super old X11, not fully fleshed out yet.
damn it works on Linux?
I though it only worked on windows and mac. Did you use proton?
I'm running it on linux now, but the FPS I'm getting are really low, I'll try it out with different proton versions and under x11
I'm not forcing any compatibility on Steam. I run on Ubuntu latest LTS version. I think fps is low for everyone in towns, but game works fine even at low fps (I mean it is not too fun at 3 fps like yesterday . . .
in ancient town with a hundred other players around I am seeing 25 fps and it looks pretty normal.
Thing is, I don't get those fps on windows. On windows I'm getting ~50fps in the worse case, while on Linux I'm getting ~30fps regularly :/
I am playing with xorg windowing. I could try with Wayland and see if it makes a difference. Some games really hate wayland (older games). I will try to check that out in the next day or two. In crowded village, I am seeing 7-10 fps
the "memory leak" phenomenon: with bitcraft client not loaded, I have other apps and Steam using 6.8GB of RAM. Bitcraft client adds 6.5 GB to total 13.3. After four hours of play, RAM use has climbed to 18.8 GB.
game update memory usage 6.6GB to load game (about the same as before). Increment of about 1.5GB after 30 minutes. In-village and crowded: 30 fps. after an hour it is up 2.6GB
I give up, currently the game is running at around 30fps on Linux/Wayland (hyprland) with proton (I tried versions 8, 9, 10, experimental and hotfix). Is not unplayable but if anyone figures out how to improve the FPS under hyprland or a wayland session please post it here! I also tried gamescope but currently there's seems to be bug on hyprland which causes gamescope to not launch (even with --backend sdl). I haven't test it on X11 but I would expect better performance than on wayland, is not an option for me because I don't want to switch sessions every time I want to play the game.
fwiw, I am running X11 and also get about 30 fps
Arch X11, running buttery smooth after their fixes. Am using lates Proton-GE-10-4.
Only issue I am having is long load times, like 4 minutes on initial loading bar before getting ingame. Once in it runs fine. I have everything maxed. No idea how to check FPS.
Ryzen 5 3600, 5700XT, 16GB ram. nothing ridiculous these days but thankfully is working.
there is a steam overlay for fps which is very unobtrusive; you can set that up in Steam. There is also an in-game F-key for fps, but I do not recall which key. F3 and F4 I find useful in game sometimes F3 shows some grids and F4 shows info about location in red text top left; not very readable though.
Ah good to know. I had forgotten about the steam overlay - it's been a while since I played anything multilayer haha.
Interestingly, my machine co pletely locked up, so rebooted, and the loading bar to get I game was maybe 30 seconds... it seemed very normal.
F6 is the key for in-game framerate. For something more sophisticated, one could always try using MangoHud instead and use goverlay to tinker with it. https://github.com/flightlessmango/MangoHud

just got kicked from game, happened a few times recently. Usually can log back in, managed to once then client disconnects. Currently clearing out old proton versions, but now I cant get an email with the code to log in - wish I could just enter my password. Sigh.
had errors for missing locale (becuase steam assumde we all live int he USA heh) but sorted with no more errors but still can't log in... will update.
Reinstalled game, deleted all proton versions from .steam/steam/compatibility.d/ and updated locale to include en_US.UTF8. oh and rebooted of course. When I eventually got back in (email code took a long time) using current steam stable proton version... it works fine after a long load time. Fingers crossed it keeps going fine. 🤞
Did a reinstall today because upgraded some bits, and went with wayland instead of xorg, and now I dont get 5+minute initial load times. Still on Arch. Also 45+fps in town instead of 31ish. So that's nice.
