Random selection is mostly done to make the selection diverse so play tests get lots users with different play styles and interests. As if you pull from the first come first serve you may end up with bunch players with same styles as they all friends or guild with same interests and play styles. And other benefits to as it stops inviting a massive group of bot email accounts that signed up all at same time in doing so this lowers the amount active users in play tests.
Alpha is sometime this year it is still TBD/TBC.
