in cond, DEF is so stacked that they're probably at like 80 or 90% dmg reduction

yeah, you want to spread out and ideally have them evenly increased, which is why most characters use elemental dmg orbs (purple), because they have too much atk (blue)
xueyi on the other hand gets free dmg from building break so she uses atk orb
for normal fights without type weakness, def multiplier is usually 50%, res is 80%, and dmg taken is 100%
you want to raise def but it caps at 100% which is only achieved by having 100% total def shred/ignore
(this is especially absurd in GnG because enemies likely have 10-30% multiplier instead and you can increase it three to tenfold to 100% when you have 100% def shred)
while ruan mei's res pen is literally just +25% which turns it into 105%
