I think it depends on how much static electricity you generate before opening the computer. Grounding yourself, wearing a grounding strap, and having an anti-static mat to work at will greatly reduce the change of damage due to electrostatic discharge.

Touch the metal part of your computer case to get rid of any built up charge before touching the internal components. This will ground you and prevent electrostatic discharge. If you rub up against carpet or fur and build up static while working, always touch your computer case before touching the internal components again.

Regardless, unless you build up a lot of static electricity by rubbing your feet on carpet or something, it is not very likely that you will damage your components even if you accidentally forgot to ground yourself. LTT made a video on testing electrostatic discharge on internal components with ElectroBoom, and it took them a lot of effort to do damage.

I always use Anti-Static PE Gloves if tinkering around with PC Components. Because better safe than sorry.

And as a bonus, injuries caused by sharp-edged metal sheets, etc. are prevented.

Yeah, if you have nothing else you can, for example. also touch the faucet or anything grounded. And just don't slip on the carpet with socks or rubber soles. xD

And of course, avoid touching any contacts if possible.

I simply like gloves because then you can grip the stuff properly without being afraid. Constantly paying attention to what you touch is annoying. xD
