That's also why "1999 has to be a void bubble because Eternalism means we can't change the past because the past is real and fixed" misunderstands Warframe's version of Eternalism.

In Warframe, every future is real. And since the past is also real, every past future - everything that could have gone different in the past - is also real.

Albrecht didn't change the past. There were always multiple versions of 1999 - some where he didn't show up, some where he did show up, and some where both he and the drifter showed up.

All of these pasts are equally real, they're just not our pasts, but alternate futures to our past.

Basically, Warframe runs on an infinite multiverse, not a single time string. We still can't "change" the past, but we can discover alternatives.

It doesn't change what happened, it just creates yet another version of the events where things happened differently. And, because Eternalism, both versions are true.

But I'll concede that that's effectively semantics, because in effect, it looks like you changed the past.

The Drifter was uprooted from their timeline, and has no way to return to it, but that doesn't have to mean that the entire branch has been destroyed.

I look at the "tree of timelines" as a whole, and you can't actually change anything on it. You can't even change the future, because the future already exists. You're only discovering it.

All that happens is that one branch sometimes crosses with another in a particularly looped way.

The "was he always going to do it or did he pick it" tries to overlap it with the question of free will: If the future is set in stone, can you actually make a choice?
In the case of the Quills, they see the future, and by doing so, and seeing all the possible results, their options of the future are already reduced to one path, because they see what they're going to do and why they're going to do it and they agree with themselves. They can't make different choices, because they already made the optimal choices, so what choice do they really have?

I'd actually argue that for Quill future-sight to work, this has to work differently for them.
They have to see what choices they won't make would result in, to see why they make the choices they make.

Which means that they have to see choices which they're never going to make.

Either that, or there's a bunch of very real timelines in which a bunch of Quill did stupid nonsense just so their other versions could see what that'd result in.

On an even bigger scale, this is why shows that focus on time travel generally refuse to set proper rules for time travel.

Having a single, deterministic timeline that can't be changed is fine for a single "Whoops we slipped into the past, we try to not change anything, we fail, oh, hey, these changes were already part of the past, everything's back to normal" episode in a show otherwise unconcerned with time travel, but would be boring for an entire series since nothing could change.

An infinite Multiverse means nothing can really be changed since it just means exploring more branches. You can make a story out of it, but only by coming up with entirely new rules that probably have to include some form of meta-time outside of time.

If something really focuses on time travel itself, one way or another it's gonna end up with time as a "timey-whimey ball of stuff".

The Dune books actually have exactly that as a side plot in the later ones.

Seeing the future becomes forbidden, because people can't tell if the seer actually just "sees" the future, or creates it through the act of seeing it, but either way, prophecy is considered more of a shackle than something useful.

But in general, in the "the future already exists" version - which, y'know, Eternalism - the future a seer/Quill would see would obviously be the one they'd choose, because if they saw a future they wanted to change, they could potentially do so, but since the future already exists, all the changes they'd want to do are already included in the already existing future.

Basically, the Quill are free to chose, but they have already chosen, and could never have made another choice because they know the consequences.
And them knowing was always part of the future, so them knowing didn't really change the future.

Time travel stuff just tends to really put me off. It's rare for me to find it enjoyable, because it gets stupid and nonsensical very fast in many cases. Duviri was fine because it takes place in the Void. Same with any other time loops we have seen and broken so far (i.e. The New War's). This being in real space and the implications of it just make it less and less enjoyable the more I think about it, and the more that will happen with it I'm sure.
