to me, Drifter was the only valid option
as a 30-something I couldn't relate to a brat, especially one who pretty much almost doomed the entire Origin system with their adoptive mommy issues
Operator needs a redemption arc that includes them void-punching their "HeY KiDDo" doppelganger
before they can exit <PERMANENTLY BANISHED TO THE VOID> status in my headcanon
and even then, I'd still prefer using Drifter simply because they can wear syandana / attachments / pistol "amp" / etc. among other reasons
in fact my single largest -- & probably only -- criticism of the Jade Shadows quest itself:
not only was Operator's showing up forced on us, but Drifter also didn't show up once
I wanted Drifter to maybe give Stalker a hug & say "sorry for your loss, they tried, I would've tried more" or something along those lines
in my headcanon, the first thing Drifter did after rebuilding Jade: they got a beacon / mark(s) / etc. just to do that

For me, as a "not a young person" I definitely see where you are coming from - having far more in common with Drifter than the 14 year-old I'd spent countless hours forming a connection with. Funny enough, I was initially hesitant to use Drifter at all - Duviri Paradox having left an overall negative impression in the pit of my stomach - but knowing they will be the focus of 1999, I used Lotus Eaters as a way to finally graduate from Operator to Drifter full time.

And I'm glad to do it, all things considered. Operator might still be the target of Wally's greedy eye - but their story is mostly complete. They don't really have more room to grow (especially as it seems they are doomed to be 14 forever) in the context of a live service game.

As a side note to something I said above, my dislike for Duviri Paradox is not a criticism. The story is solid and it adds a lot of good, fun activities to the game - which I spend plenty of time engaging with. My issue with Duviri Paradox is purely irrational. I'm autistic and there's something with the music and art direction of the overall experience that just turns me off completely - something I can't really explain, or adapt to.

Duviri had a similar effect on me as well but mostly (if not entirely) for story reasons; I thought The Duviri Paradox would be one of Drifter's major arcs, like what The War Within and The Sacrifice were to Operator; some would argue it technically was, but such notions rang hollow in the pacing / context / etc. of the quest itself when considering that it was also basically a tutorial for Duviri game modes & was thus more or less shackled to being just that, especially having played through it AFTER The New War. In my opinion, The Duviri Paradox we ended up getting (versus what it could've been) truly was meant to be played closer to the start of the game.

I feel like one way they could maybe rectify that if they wanted to revisit Duviri in the future for whatever reasons could be to include a new spiral (separate from the existing ones) that involves -- rather than trying to defeat the Orowyrm -- having to stop Wally from destroying another island in Duviri (!!!) and then it'd feel like there are actual major stakes involved to it... or maybe that could even be part of a future story quest, it doesn't even have to be tied to existing Duviri cycles, perhaps at the same time Operator & others are fighting The Murmur / Wally / etc. elsewhere, Drifter is also trying to fight that faction in Duviri (possibly w/ help from other Drifters because Eternalism shenanigans)

I partly agree on the latter, but also partly disagree, partly because of the former; we know Drifter is going to be in 1999 but unless some TNW Ballas-like thing happens to Drifter, it's not like they're going to be stuck there or anything such; in any event: while Drifter is away in 1999, it could be a time for more Operator-focused stories, including those leading to a final Wally confrontation & what their role in that would be

I definitely see what you mean - and I agree - my point about growth was specifically on a character level. Operator has already unlocked their full potential and defeated the bad guy who upset their status quo - and while there's still mystery and intrigue, the live service model is going to shackle the operator's arc to something established as the status quo.

The Drifter though - they are dealing with the Albrecht stuff directly and are largely an open book for character exploration.

Operator forming a relationship to a surrogate mother, learns about their past, unlocks their intrinsic power - then mother is taken away. They go on a quest to reunite with their mother - and succeed.

That's the journey operator started on, all the way back to the beginning.

The operator's story is finished - but the plot carries on and Drifter is now being told to go and take care of it. Lotus Eaters is a passing of the torch transition.

But the live service model can't outright remove Operator - so future content will still be open to them. A new story for that character may eventually open up - but it's doubtful that DE will commit to anything that will change the Operator, beyond plot progression.
