The main reason why I want my friend to wait until after Second Dream is because I am operating under the assumption that he doesn’t know about the Tenno and the Warframe kinda being separate entities, and that the Operator is a bit more literal than one would assume. TL;DR I don’t want to spoil the first really big twist of Warframe’s story

And Duviri kinda sets the first domino off to that twist when the Drifter takes control of the tutorial Warframe in the quest

Totally agree. I think it was a good idea to make something that new players can do to experience some story content so to show them there's more than just grind - but I don't think they really thought out just how confusing it makes things, once you return to the Origin System.

Personally it actually drove me away for months. I was fairly new, only making it to Mars when Duviri came out and when I logged in for my second time I chose it and everything was so different and weird and confusing that I thought DE overhauled the whole game and changed it from the space ninja stuff to be more of a Dark Souls clone.

I eventually pushed through it, just trying to finish it as fast as I could - for back to the Origin System but had no recollection of any of the story stuff from Duviri. When I got through the New War nothing even occurred to me as being connected, because I had no context in the beginning and so much other stuff happened in between.

In hindsight the connection to New War is so badly implemented that it was all wasted on someone new to the world.

Imo, this is what makes Duviri if you play before The New War so beautiful, especially if you have someone who knows precisely what to look for offering radio assistance. For instance, when I brought my brother through the game, I pointed out the broken Narmer veil on the floor of Teshin’s cave, the Lotus hand traveling through that void portal at the start of the quest, the Drifter’s impalement via Paracesis also at the start, and I told my brother to nest those little details in the back of his head, and then when he played The New War, I told him to remember all those tiny details from The Paradox

The name of the quest kinda gives away its narrative purpose, for up to date players, it’s meant to explain how the Drifter got into the Origin System; and for new players, it’s supposed to raise answers that get contextualized in the New War

Oh absolutely - the issue is really the amount of stuff in between - the sheer volume of other more prescient things to take note of - that unless you are lucky to have someone whispering recall advice, it's all but wasted.

But I don't regret doing it first. If given the choice to do it again, considering I didn't like the art style of Duviri, the tone, the style (I'm autistic and it doesn't mix well with me), I would've skipped it or rushed through it to get it over with, all the same.

So far as I understand Transference on a typical frame is that our Tenno’s consciousness acts like a pilot in the Warframe’s nervous system? With Umbra things get a bit weird, but it seems mostly that Umbra’s consciousness is, in a way, almost subservient to our Tennos’ consciousnesses when we pilot Umbra. So when we pop out to do Tenno chicanery, in a typical Warframe, the analogous “plug” is pulled, leaving the Warframe just standing there, but when it’s Umbra, his consciousness becomes the dominant consciousness in his body, allowing him to do absolutely nothing(unless you get the Warrior’s Rest augment, in that case, Umbra just stands and looks pretty but idk how augments play into a Warframe’s lore)

Did I misinterpret anything?

So rather than a pilot of a biosteel flesh drone that has little to no consciousness(in a typical frame), it’s rather that we’re in it’s head telling the typical frame what to do and it has no choice but to act due to the standard Transference Bolt? But with Umbra’s specialized Transference Bolt, Umbra expresses a degree of sentience when the modified Transference Bolt isn’t having a will imposed onto it?

Frames act how we tell them to because we calm their tortured minds, I'm guessing it's kinda their form of showing gratitude. Of course the replicas we build are just flesh puppets that can seemingly only act on their own if absolutely necessary(as seen in the second dream quest). Umbra's one memory is what's keeping him sentient

I’ve assumed this; I’ll admit that most of the theorizing I’ve presented is working backwards from my desired conclusion, i.e., I really want our Warframes to be fully capable (but suppressed) versions of their originals since that would make it possible to reunite Jade with her family and give her the ending she promised in the last lines of Jade’s Promise. I doubt that we’ll ever get a chance to do it properly, but I want it to be possible.

but on the gameplay end it makes sense not to do, enough people dislike Umbra's sentience enough that they made a mod to turn it off lmao

Sentience doesn't really work on Umbra tbh because his abilities and Excalibur's whole thing is melee, which the bot seems to have no clue how to do melee effectively

So the same exact AI on a different frame may be more effective

Think like Revenant, who has mostly like, caster abilities. Not attack abilities like Umbra does, where he moves all over the place and gets thrown into five guys, or casts his sword and is stuck standing still for seconds because he doesn't know how to turn it off and use his gun

I think that would work swimmingly

An update to how sentient warframes' health and energy work would also be nice in that case though. It sucks switching back to Umbra and seeing that he depleted the entire energy bar and is at 20 health and no shields

Lotus eaters will likely become replayable with the next big update because up until a bit after Dante Unbound but before Jade Shadows, Whispers in the Walls wasn’t replayable, and up until Lotus Eaters recently, Jade Shadows wasn’t either.
